WAIT, HARRY POTTER 2D NEWS?!

HP7:P1 can't make 3D deadline.

Harry Potter sans headache? I'm there.

This really is surprising. And awesome.

Just shows what strength the franchise has on it's own. And yeah, it would totally "taint" the legacy of the films. And 3D returns have been diminishing ever since Avatar and Alice.

I hope part II stays 2D as well.

It's also nice to see that the studio isn't forcing 3D onto the public for a cash grab. This movie's going to make bank, there's no doubt, and so adding a 3D surcharge would only help soften beds of hundred dollar bills, and it would make that regardless of the 3D's quality. So this is good news.
Wasn't seeing it in 3D anyway, but if this is the first step towards the trend dying, hooray.

The last two Potter films have miraculously had damn decent post-converted 3D. Phoenix's wizard battle looked fantastic. I'm glad theyre not doing it unless they can get it right, though.

Dear WB,

Blowjobs. On me.
I bet they'll finish up the 3D version and maybe re-release the film in 3D shortly before Part II comes out.

Now THAT'S a cash grab!
While I'm not familiar with the software behind the technology or the man hours necessary to post-convert, I would think Warner Brothers would have infinitely deep pockets for something like the Potter franchise. Surely, they could get it done if they were willing to shell out the bucks? Or am I wrong about that? If not, then yeah, I'd bank on a later 3D release cash grab.
I think it's just really time intensive to do right. Sheer rendering times are something that cash can't overcome I'd imagine.
It's a really intense process, from what I gather.
Color me surprised that a major studio has sided with artistic integrity and not $$. But yeah, they'll probably re-release it in 3D before Part 2. In which, case, $$$$$$$

Bravo sir.

Seriously impressed with this decisions. WB are clearly taking this very seriously.
I can't freaking wait.

I'm glad I will be able to see this in IMAX without having to watch it in 3D. This is great news. Unfortunately, it seems I won't get this with part 2.
Glad to see cooler heads prevail, and them not releasing some shoddy 3-d effect ridden film, like Clash of the Titans.

I am guessing tho, that it will still be converted, and rereleased before, then along side part 2 of the series, which will also be in 3-D.

YES! I wasn't looking forward to trying to find a theater showing this in 2D. Bravo to WB for a wise decision.

I agree with everyone, this is fantastic news.

It is news that actually helps the future of 3D in my estimation. Post-Conversion is more or less crap. It only ever looks good with a ton of time and conservative use. Full, quick and sloppy post-conversion is just plain god awful. The studios may be finally understanding that Avatar 3D is DIFFERENT than Clash of the Titans 3D, therefore 3D should really only exist for films that plan on shooting in 3D from the beginning.

As for the eventual 3D re release next summer, I have no problem with it. In fact it is really cool. I think any film that is released in 2 parts should have a re release of the first part when the second part comes out. I love seeing the previous film on the big screen in close proximity to the new one.

Awesome news. Now Potter 7 will become a much-better film thanks to the absence of this 3D gimmick. If only more movies like Crash of the Titans follow suit, although it probably won't have made them into better movies anyway.

No, but it is one less thing to criticize. For a film like Titans, that could be a small victory.

Embarrassing debacle for the Potter people, this is. Should have shot in Native 3D, this "conversion" nonsense is a short sighted cash grab. Warners saves a few dollars in the short term, and manages to lose out on the opportunity to ensure the future value of their HP film catalog in the process. Nice going

Yes, I'm sure they are supremely embarrassed with their multi-billion dollar franchise. Thanks for posting one of the stupidest things I've ever seen on these forums. Congrats!

This is great news, hopefully they ditch the 3-D for part II as well.

Fine by me.

Harry Potter films have been doing post conversion 3D segments for the last few installments and it has been fantastic. Warner no doubt was hoping the long post time was enough to do the whole movie in that quality... when they realized the couldn't they did the smart thing and shelved the work they already did and focused on the movie not the 3D. I don't have anything but great things to say about that line of thinking.

Ditto. If they have already started work on converting it, then why waste the money? They'll probably re-release it with part II.

It makes me happy that I wont have to sit through another movie done pointlessly in 3d.

Fair enough, I've only seen the first 40 minutes of the first POTTER film, so I can't speak with any authority about any the "post conversions" WB commissioned for the other recent HP films. I guess my objection is more about "conversion" in general, as I don't believe a 2D image turned into a moving picture pop up book has anything to do with the 3D Revolution. I know I might sound like a broken record on this subject sometimes, but it's tough: If you're a 3D Revolutionary, everything to do with the topic suddenly becomes very political
