From Indie hot to Studio hack? Perhaps, perhaps not.

So Mark Wahlberg is Nathan Drake then?

Never in a million years would I pair O. Russell and a property like Uncharted. So weird. That reminds me that I should watch Fuckabees again.

I'm kinda looking forward to The Fighter if only for the fact that O. Russell seems to be one of the few people who can get a good performance out of Whalberg.

Whalberg's in his comfort zone playing blue-collar joes. Give him something that needs a certain amount of swagger, I can't buy him in. It's either weird, or completely forgettable.

This is a very interesting choice. I really love the Uncharted games so this gives me some hope. Just a little fanwank here,I think James Roday would be an amazing Drake.

I'm sick of Nathan Fillion and Eric Borneaz being mentioned. I'd like to see an "unconentional" choice. At least one that's not as obvious. I'd actually like to see Affleck as Drake. Sure he's not a Drake clone like Fillion, but he's a serious talent and I think he could definitely handle the action and physicality as well as the comedy.

That's one out-of-the-blue director/project team up. Kind of interesting that a difficult guy like Russell now seems eager to show that he can play ball with the studios. Maybe he was starting to feel that he may not get too many more chances.

That's a choice I could easily see working.

While they're at it they should also get Terrence Malick for a Gears Of War film.

Which come to think of it may actually work. Not in a way the fanbase would like though.

First person to suggest Jon Hamm gets his dick sheared off.

Yeah this is weird.
I wonder how long it will take for Dave O. to be kicked off the project.

But no matter who directs the movie, it'll probably wind up being a letdown.
Uncarted 1 & 2 are some of the most cinematic games out there. There's no way a live action movie will have the budget to recreate all the nonstop action, giant setpieces and location jumping from the games.

As long as its Casey.

I think this is just Russell taking a paycheck gig. One can't eat 'indie film cred'.

Andre, your reference to the perilous state of the film industry---is that in reference to the collapse of DVD sales? A Chud writer doing an analysis of the modern state of affairs of the movie *business* would be hella interesting.

You mean like a box office column? I KEED I KEED. Basically, the studios are not taking chances these days.

This kind of makes me fear what might be awaiting me when I see The Fighter. David O. Russell contemplating an adaptation of some bullshit videogame I've never heard of. Yuck, how depressing.

So should we be expecting a middle of the road adaptation, then? Gah, I hope not. One thing that's great about the games is how strong the established tone is. Really, as long as the filmmakers can maintain that (along with the very balanced fantasy-reality ratio), then they have a lot of room to play around.

This period actually brings to mind the late '60's-early 70's (not that I was around then, only a twinkle in my folks' eye).

The studio system was going through a transition then and the movie business struggled; the same seems to be happening now, but mainly due to the introduction of new technology, a poor economy and changing audience habits.
