Lake Placid

Haven't seen this since it was first released, but fuck me it's actually pretty good.

Such a fun flick (That used Betty White to great effect years before she suddenly appeared everywhere). Sure it's not particulary scary, just more like a comedy that happens to feature a Giant Crocodile. But the small bits of gore there is was well handled by Steve Miner.

I'm suprised how little Bill Pullman has to do here, the film feels much more like the Brendan Gleeson show, and of course he's fucking brilliant. And of course there's Oliver Platt. My only complaint is that the film feels too short (It's only 82 minutes long). I wouldn't be surprised if David E Kelly's script ran a lot longer.

Even though there's nothing here which tops the massacre in the centre of the film, I think this film manages the scares/comedy hybrid much better than Piranha 3D did, and there's some decent CG (Croc takes Bear) despite the age.

Has anyone seen the sequels to this one yet?

I never caught the sequels but I used to love Lake Placid when I was a young monster fanatic.

Movies like Lake Placid are my generations Drive Thru horror schlock, it doesn't take itself seriously and I agree it's much more of a comedy than a horror film. Silly characters interacting and a giant crocodile fucking shit up and eating everything? Fuck yeah!

It has all the elements that made Alligator so much fun but with better FX.

The sequel, with poor Cloris Leachman sitting in for Betty White, manages to miss the point entirely. It substitutes the charming funness of the first for a decidely Sci-fi (channel)* orignal feel, complete with terrible dialogue, horrible no-name actors and CGI which is far inferior to that seen in the original.

So there.....

I think this is the movie that first set off the spark to all the Betty White worship going around nowadays.

Most definitely. Am I completely wrong or does she say something along the lines of "If I had a dick, this is when I'd tell you to suck it" in the movie?

I think that is exactly what she says.

There you have it. Old ladies saying vulgar things always makes people go "(x person) rocks!"

I haven't seen the movie in a while, but Brendan Gleeson is just a ton of fun in this, what with his big gun and everything. Platt was also funny. It's a pretty inoffensive movie. Not great or even approaching great, but it's fun and breezy.

Yeah, Gleeson and Platt need to work together again.

I noted it in the review on my blog, but in a slight against PETA Kelly has more animals killed off in the film than he does people.
