Just happened to catch this on cable the other night for the first time in decades, and it looked amazing compared to my old VHS tape.

Worth a look for anyone planning to see Julie Taymor's Tempest, as it borrows many elements from Shakespeare's play.

An essential film.

This was the first of the classic 50s sci-fi films I latched onto as a kid, what with Robby and the Id Monster. But then as I got older and realized the Shakespeare parallels, it went from classic sci-fi to simply classic film.

Highly recommend either renting or just flat out buying the blu-ray, which I watched a couple of weeks back.

That tour of the Krell complex is still one of my favorite sci-fi set pieces. No action. No monsters. Just a great mixture of imagination and sense of discovery.

Dread a remake that can't help but show the Krell at some point in the film.

Abbott & Prospero, Forbidden Planet is...Awe-Inspiring. I have it on dvd, and it came with a mini...Robby The RobotIf it must be remade, I am fine with meeting the...Krell, as long as...Naomi Watts, doesn't fall in love with one (ala the...Worst aspect of the remake of...KING KONG!). I am only...Semi-Joking, as that is something that could happen.

Yeah, it's a terrific addition to the collection. I thought the image was great as well. Nice extras (same as in the 2 disc review linked above). It's amazing how influential this flick really was and how it's really good sci-fi (dressed up as space opera nearly) to boot. MGM really went all out on this, when most from that era or before were simply B-movie matinee fodder.

I wonder if this flick was floating around in the back of Crichton's mind, when he wrote SPHERE...? If FORBIDDEN PLANET is "the Tempest in Space", then SPHERE is "Forbidden Planet underwater".

In addition to the obvious STAR TREK influencing elements (and the SPHERE lift), I couldn't help but also think of TOTAL RECALL (buried alien technology) and GALAXY OF TERROR (danger from our own imagination, angular architecture), and PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES when I revisited this. And STAR WARS' C3PO as well: "If you do not speak English, I am at your disposal with 187 other languages along with their various dialects and subtongues."
