For some reason, no thread for this was created. It's an excellent write-up. Especially like "He excelled playing creeps and leeches, someone who maybe deserved a punch in the mouth, but the thought that he might enjoy it steadies the hand." in regards to Peter Lorre.

And this was a great article.

Great movie, great article. And its on Blu-ray now? Guess I'm watching it again. Not that I won't love every minute of it. The movie is like pure concentrated filmic pleasure.

The earlier version with Ricardo Cortez is worth a look, if only to observe the difference between a merely good film and a great one. Cortez comes across as much more of a ladies' man: it's made clearer that Spade was banging his partner's wife long before Archer got killed.

Nice write up. For some reason I thought you were down on Huston, Dre. Glad to see you aren't (he's a favorite). Interesting you noting the contrast between MALTESE and THE BIG SLEEP; more than just tone, watching them back to back is the perfect way to appreciate what each of his two most famous director/collaborators could get out of him; the subtle differences in performance; both significant roles cool enough that you're watching a man becoming an icon before your eyes.

Great write up and a great film. Please do more.

Didn't realize this was the film that put Bogey on the map: for some reason I thought he was already a leading man.

Wait... wasn't it pretty clear that Bogey was stchupping his partner's wife in this as well? I seem to remember it being clearly the case. But I also don't remember Lorrie trying to be as gay as 1940s would allow. Putting it in the DVD player tomorrow.

I really wish I could make a gif. of Elisha Cook Jr as he realizes he's been sold out by Sydney Greenstreet, such an unintentionally hilarious moment.

One of the thing's I love about Spade is that he never softened, not even in the face of Msry Astor pleading to let her go and his reasoning is bang on.

After his partner gets shot, the wife is all over Spade, and Spade's all guilty and "naw that ain't right" about it, but it's clear they had a thing going on, which he regarded as casual.

And Lorrie's as gay as a hand grenade ( to borrow a phrase) in this

Oh yeah, they fucked. I'm just saying the lady... is a tramp. These MODs I guess don't autostart threads. I did one for Thin Red Line as well. Thanks for reading.

Maybe the first film I ever saw, as young'un, out of a drive to actually watch good/classic movies. Haven't seen it since, so I'm using this post as an excuse to revisit at some point.
