LUC BESSON'S NEW SCI-FI DREAM

Fifth Element on steroids, in theory.

Fifth Element had a great, promising opening that quickly detoured into episodic meanderings that felt way too long. The whole subplot with the opera singer should have taken maybe twenty minutes tops. Instead it took up the entire second half. If Besson wanted to go into quirky Douglas Adams territory like that again, he needs to learn how to focus.

I nominate Terry Pratchett for the screenplay. Ian Holm's role of the prophet reminded me a lot of the religion from Small Gods.

So long as "Aaauuuttooo wwwaaasssshh" gets ramped up to the 10th power, as well.

PASS. In fact, I'll MULTIPASS on this fucking movie. 'The Fifth Element' is one of the single worst movies that I've ever seen. There's no way in hell that I'm gonna watch a movie that tries to outdo it.

I'm on board. 5TH E was ballsout trippy WTF like a French Heavy Metal mag story (not saying it's good, but I consider it entertaining). Bring it.

I'll be the guy who comes out and says I love The Fifth Element and its weird, scattershot plot. It's a ton of fun, and is addictively silly. So there.

I'd love it if the film really was called "The 9,7965,625th Element".

I second Greg's opinion. Moebius' designs alone are worth the price of admission. And I'm completely on board with this.

Hopefully he's learned from his mistakes on TFE...but the fact he's namechecking Cameron's Dance with Wolves suggests otherwise...

It's gonna be hard to top one of the best movies of the 90's.
First let me hear that Chris Tucker is nowhere near this movie and then we'll talk, Luc. The first half of ELEMENT has some good stuff in it.

Oh Hamburgers...

For me The Fifth Element is one of my favorite movies of all time. It is visually stunning, it has great action, great cast and the some of the coolest chase scenes I have ever seen. It is by no means perfect, but I love it dearly.

So count me as incredibly excited to see Luc Besson re-enter the Sci-Fi film realm, if Avatar inspired him to create a new world, I want to see it.

I, too, have great love for the Fifth Element. It's silly, often stupid, and a bit schizo . . . but it is also daring, funny and ambitious. I'll take it over warmed over crap like the new Star Trek or Predators or whatever any day.

ETA: "Aziz! Light!"

Yea, I love The Fifth Element unabashedly. Tucker and all. plus it has weed smokin Jamaicans loading nuclear gas tanks.
So now he's assembling a new film he calls "Fifth Element to the 10th power"

please god, I hope this doesn't apply to a reprised Chris Tucker/Ruby Rodd
post #15 of 24
Any chance Besson gets Eric Serra to do the score?

The score for The Fifth Element is one of my favorite CDs ever. The music is just amazing.
I'll join the "I love the Fifth Element" choir, adding a bit of "probably in ways I'll never love another human being".

And by that, I mean naked Milla Jovovich.

Except more of it.

ETA - Just in case there was any confusion.

Nup, I'm more in the camp of Mr.Booth, Fifth Element leaves me pretty darn cold these days, its a vacuous empty-headed Gaultier fever dream.

I think the bigger news to come from this article is that Bessons finally directing a film again.

Damn, why couldn't this be the grown-Matilda Leon/The Professional sequel I've always dreamed of instead.

Only if Besson titles this Rush Hour 4.

I love Besson's mathematical word play he deployed to hype his new idea, and THE FIFTH ELEMENT is a movie I have generally warm feelings towards. The vision of future cigarettes where the filters have spread like a cancer and now take up most of the smoke is a lot of fun, and for me the enjoyment I get from the movie is found on a scene to scene basis in the little details

The movie is a bit of a mess and drags like crazy during it's second half, but all the same it's interesting in ways most movies are not so if he wants to make more big budgeted sci fi weirdness, I'd definitely watch it.

PS 'Leeloo Dallas Multipass' remains hysterically funny to say out of context IMHO

EDIT: Besson's use of the word 'green' meaning hip or cool was remarkably prescient , and I hope he sticks with it for the new movie or better yet invents new catchprases.

He wants to, Portman wants to, there is a script, problem is Gaumont or whoever own the right wants to run the show.
Portman wants to? There's a script? Last I heard Portman was only a "if the right script comes along and if Besson is on board with it" and the script didn't exist.
Yeah I want Mathilda. As for The Fifth Element to the 10th power um screw that. Besson you're better than that.

I don't understand the hate for Chris Tucker in this movie. Yes, the character of Ruby Rod was obnoxious to the extreme, but I always thought that he was supposed to be obnoxious, in which case it was a successful performance.
