Meserine was fantastic, and I didn't his take on Assault on Precinct 13, so I'm willing to give Richet the benefit of doubt. Still it's a shame to see Hillcoat off the project, just because I imagine Nick Cave could have done an awesome song to soundtrack Christian Bale chewing his arm stump for nourishment.

Yes, and it would have been layered with instrumental awesomeness.

Arg, this is genuinely crushing. The news of this proposed film was some of the best movie news I'd heard all year, and I couldn't agree more with you when you said that it's a perfect marriage of material and talent. I wrote at length about how excited I was for it, and this news is simply crummy

Hillcoat is someone I'm enormously intrigued by. I appreciated TP but wasn't a huge fan. THE ROAD though is one of the most powerful and affecting films I've ever seen, and aside from what Viggo brought to the table, every bit of that was very much Hillcoat's doing

For this western, the story sounded fantastic, and Bale an ideal star to face down the bear. I don't know who this other fellow is that's been brought on to replace him, but at this point I just hope that Bale doesn't walk. I deeply regret the fact that I'm not getting the Hillcoat Bale team up I'd been salivating over, but at this point I just don't want the movie to fall apart all together
