I didn't love Piranha 3D as much as some, and I'm not a huge fan of Aja's, but I can't deny that he understood the material and was the reason it worked as well as it did.

I was coming in to type this exact same sentiment. So, I second Patrick right down the wire.

On the other hand, I think it's good for Aja, a horror director with a lot of technical skill. I'm still waiting for him to make a truly good movie that's worth his talent. In some ways, he reminds me of Snyder, a filmmaker that's technically skilled but doesn't have any particular themes that seem to interest them. They're cover artists that look for good songs to riff off of. High Tension was his most unique movie and even that was derivative to the point of being like a parody of Kaufman's brothers idea in Adaptation. Bad.

Gulager will make it depraved and disgusting. If Dunstan and Melton go with the way they wrote the original Feast, then this will be a worthy follow up.

Don't think it can push the R-rated boundaries as far as the remake did, but I'm up for another go with the super piranha. In 3D!

Funny thing, Nick, is your mention of The Collector. Tonight I was skimming through On Demand, and on the Movie Channel happened to be this classic piece of cinema. All I knew of this movie was that you had given it a balloon, and that the collector was a retard. Even with that knowledge, since it was free, I felt forced to watch it. Your review could not have hit the nail any harder. These dudes wrote "The Collector", that should automatically eliminate them writing a script again. The guy set traps all over the house for nobody in particular, I think a balloon might have been too generous.

Not sure why anyone would have thought Aja would return, but I'll see the sequel by the Gang That Couldn't Film Straight, sure. But if I had to choose between a sequel and a 1:1 scale replica of the prehistoric piranha for my desk...well, you know.

Didn't actually catch Piranha 3D myself, but despite all the good I hear about it I'm happy that Aja won't return for the sequel. I think he's got a really great, original horror film in him somewhere amidst his technical skills, and I'd like to see him try to coax that film out of his head and onto celluloid.

yeah, having just read that Lake Placid 3 review I'd say this bullshit definitely does not compute.

If they replace Aja in Piranha 3D sequel, then I think it will probably turn out to be just like The Hills Have Eyes 2...a giant turd.

Can't agree with you here: THHE is not only one of the scariest films I've ever seen, it's also one of the cleverer horror movies of the past 15 years IMHO

Anyway, have not yet seen PIRANHA, and while I'm glad Aja did well on that film, he's an interesting enough film maker that I'd rather he went out and tried his hand at something new than become bogged down in one horror series or another. No matter how great PIRANHA is, given the review it seems like it covered all that needs to be said about giant killer PIRHANAS. Leave the sequel to someone else and let them play in the sandbox he built

Glad that Gulager has a new gig. Too bad he's paired (again and again and again) with those boys, though.

Yeah what kind of hell is Gulager in? Oh yeah the Weinstein one.

Aja get your shit together mate you're better than the Weinsteins.
