DIE HARD FOR EVER AND EVER

Bruce wants to do 2 more.

This franchise is dead to me.
....unless McTiernan escapes the big house and decides to direct another one.
DH 5 was doomed the moment Skip Woods signed on to write the script. Fuck Skip Woods. And fuck the Die Hard "franchise."
As long as it's not PG-13. I need to hear at least one "motherfucker" in the theater per movie.

Christ.

Die? Hardly.
Oh god, PLEASE JUST DIE ALREADY!
People, the next one is an odd numbered entry, which means GRUBER FAMILY.

Also means that John McT returns. I nominate Bill Nighy as the long lost Gruber brother!
Said it before and I'll say it again: Helen Mirren as Mama Gruber.

Even better, have him film it from the inside. McClain goes to jail!
Several years ago Willis seemed all about distancing himself from all but the first film, now its obvious that he's old, greedy, and totally doesn't give a fuck about anything.
If he wants to recapture some of that McClane magic he needs to regrow the receding hairline.
Willis' laziness is going to come around a bite him in the ass. He worked with some really interesting directors early on (Tarantino, McTiernan, Shymalan, Walter Hill). When's the last time he worked with someone that really pushed him as an actor? He's falling into that trap that Stallone and Eddie Murphy did in the 90's, where they only worked with directors they could push around. Kevin Smith has all but come out and said that regarding "Cop Out", quality of the film aside. It's too bad. He does have talent.

Edit to add: Although his working with Rian Johnson could be interesting.
As a LFODH fan I say good. Sure, LFODH was basically "McClane kicks ass with a nerdy sidekick" but it was a lot of fun. Especially the unrated version. Willis and Long had good chemistry and there were some great action scenes. Yes the fighter jet takeover was over the top, but I can live with that. And Willis still looks exactly the same as he has for the past 10 years so until he starts visibly ageing I say good for him. It's not like he looks and acts older than the Cryptkeeper like Harrison Ford does.
The jet scene could be seen as a tribute to the truck surfing in DHWAV.
oh man. Is there any remotely successful thing in the last 20 years that didn't get thrown into the franchise making meat machine and turned into a surgically enhanced freakshow?
Hope this all collapses onto itself soon.

Keep in mind that in the past decade Willis has worked with Richard Linklater, Steven Soderbergh, Richard Donner, Jonathan Mostow, Antoine Fuqua, and Florent Siri. Those are some heavy hitters, and I doubt Willis was pushing them all around.

Considering I happily ignore the existence of both the third and fourth entries of this franchise, I thoroughly look forward to ignoring the fifth and sixth.
Ignorance is bliss sometimes indeed. I can only watch and care about a finite number of movies in my lifespan.

Wait, you ignore the existence of With a Vengeance but not Die Harder.

Really?

Still haven't seen the fourth film, but I love 1 and 3 and kinda like the 2nd so I should probably get around to it at some point.

Lol RD thinks DH2 is better than 3.

Edit: Beaten by Spike!
I think RD just operates on a 'movie is more than 20 years old' = invariably good, 'movie is less than 20 years old' = PROOF OF THE DOWNFALL OF WESTERN SOCIETY, paradigm.
Put him back in a skyscraper that's crawling with international terrorists (led by Al Leong as Uli's revenge-seeking twin brother) and maybe I'll bite. Opening up the canvas and giving McClane too much breathing room and sidekicks has been the folly of the sequels.
No I just don't like Die Hard 3 - it's not a Die Hard movie, it's some giant sprawling action extravaganza with a blue collar superhero at the centre of it that happens to be called John McClain. It bares little to no resemblance to what I recognise and love personally as 'Die Hard' no matter how many Grubers they want to shove in there.

You guys are welcome to love it like puppy made of rainbows, it just does nothing for me.

ETA: Bradito's spot on...

Luca S., Die Hard 2: Die Harder is the...Best, Die Hard film. Dennis Franz alone, makes it so.
Yeah, screw DH2 haters. I friggin' love airports.

Die Harder IS better than With A Vengeance. By quite a bit. Like it has a third act.
I've always preferred Vengeance over Die Harder.
Anyone who has a problem with that can meet me at Police Plaza and we'll SETTLE DIS LIKE MEN.

You have to change things up a little. Making the same movie over and over again is stupid. DH2 is too much of a DIE HARD rehash. McClane has a lot more room to play with in Vengeance, but he's basically still "trapped" and he's still facing impossible odds. Also the "that's not McClane!" stuff is hyperbole. He's still a fiery, foul mouthed wiseass. The only thing different about him in Vengeance is that he's divorced and hung over. Seemed like a natural progression for the character.
I kind of love every entry into this series. In that I think they're all varying degrees of awesome. The harrier scene is completely absurd and a completely different kind of action sequence than Die Hard has had up until that point, but how can you hate a movie with this exchange?

"You KILLED a helicopter with a CAR!"

"Yeah... I ran out of bullets."

There's fun bad and then there's Indiana Jones 4. Live Free was mostly the fun kind.
Gah, I hated Die Hard 4. I can't possibly see how this franchise has anything left to offer.

They seem to have squandered the character in favour of a tired formula and the opportunity for a lame litany of in-jokes (though such phenomena are not restricted to the Die Hard franchise by any means).

I used to think With A Vengeance was superior to Die Harder but I saw them both on TV recently and they pretty much balance out in terms of pros and cons.
John McTiernan over Renny Harlin, all day, but With A Vengeance has aforementioned crappy sidekick yelling all the time. Simon Gruber is more fun than Col. Stuart but McClane's character in Die Harder feels like much less of a cheat than the washed-up, divorced booze-hound of With A Vengeance (other characters acknowledge McClane as a legit hero in Die Harder, due to his famouse exploits in Nakatomi Plaza).
Bruce Willis really needs to think about the projects he's doing and fire his agent.

What Die Hard franchise? Les Wiseman killed that didn't he?
Die Harder was never going to succeed in the wake of Die Hard but I still enjoy it, I know it's a rehash but Harlin just loads the film with great character actors, the film has Franco Nero in it, and goes to town on the action scenes. With a Vengeance coasts largely on the interplay between Willis and Sam J, I'll take either over Live Free or Die Hard.
If they get good villains it might be worth Redboxing the eventual unrated DVDs.

It's completely receded, methinks, but hey wigs!
He didn't feel like McClane anymore in the last one. Part hair, part cleaned-up language, I suppose.
DIE HARD has a third act. DHWAV has Jeremy Fucking Irons giving Alan Rickman a run for his money as top DIE HARD villain, plus the great score, plus Jackson and Willis' chemistry, plus all the peripheral cops being tons of fun. There's little to no fun in DIE HARDER. VENGEANCE wins.

That's actually not a bad idea. Have him sent to jail then forced to fight for survival against a posse of hardened criminals controlling the jail. Derivative but could be done low key as an antidote to number 4's ridiculousness. Kinda like an "Outland" vibe.
It's a little contrived for him to be sent to jail. If he's still a cop, he could be there talking to an inmate or something, just don't have that inmate and/or a wayward defense attorney become his buddy.
He could be visiting Argyle, who's been locked up for misuse of limo company property.

So, only 7 more till we get to this point?
