Swans - My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky

Of everything I was expecting to happen musically in 2010, and this has been a year of Great (and generally well met) Expectations, one of the things I never counted on was a) Michael Gira 're-activating' the Swans after his dalliance in other projects throughout the 90s and b) their new album being an amazing sounding piece of work.

I've loved so many albums this year, but something about this one has really got under my skin. I grew up listening to old Swans albums, it's probably what gave me such a sunny disposition, but I've always disliked 'reunions'. As such I was skeptical of new material from the group, but songs like 'You Fucking People Make Me Sick' feel so energised and interesting, it's not a standout album but there is something wonderfully dense about the album. It feels like something to unearth and unravel.

As a complete newcomer to the band, this album has absolutely blown my mind from the first spin.

I've known the band by fame for years, mostly by reading about them on extreme Metal magazines - Napalm Death alone must have mentioned them in a thousand interviews - but for one reason or another I never listened to any of their albums, even if I noticed how this band commands supreme respect from both the press and musicians I follow.

A few weeks back I read a swooning review of the new record on AV Club and decided the finally check out what the fuss was all about. I didn't even know the band had been inactive for years.

As I said, I found it to be incredible. Completely different from what I expected (mostly considering the bands that usually cite Swans as a major influence), it's gorgeous music that manages to achieve extreme aggressiveness with restraint, if that makes any sense. It has a genuinely unsettling undercurrent going on. As the AV Club guy said in much better words, "there's something so ravenously fucking desperate about this Swans record".

Incidentally this morning I received the Soundtracks For the Blind reissue from Amazon, this weekend I'll make sure to plunge into it.

Spike, any particular suggestions for further listening?

I personally think THE GREAT ANNIHILATOR is their best album, but either that or CHILDREN OF GOD are good starting points. Saw them live, for the first time, last night. Just an amazing group to watch, really minimalistic in terms of what they were doing on stage but the music was just ferocious and the only band I've seen play louder were probably DROPKICK MURPHYS.

Soundtracks for the Blind is one of my favorite albums of all fucking time, so I'm going to have to check this out.
