Devin's New Gig...

http://www.badassdigest.com

I think the concept is cool: a website that extends the brand of the Alamo Drafthouse and lets them get into different venues, and maybe brings the feel of the community that's grown up around Alamo to the masses who don't have easy access. And hey, Star Trekkin' is coming back!

BadAssDigest?

A little close to AintItCool, no?
So ... it's another movie website.

EDIT: Let me clarify -- it seemed like he was moving on to something bigger than this. It just feels like more of the same in a different place.
I like the idea of it. I'll check it out. Doesn't change the fact that he screwed Nick over and created a drama when one phone call would have solved the problem. It's not like he worked here for over 5 years.

I thought that too, as the way the new gig had been hyped it sounded like there would be more to it than just another website. But it's the first day, more than willing to be patient see where it goes.
It's Devin, at a different URL. Great for him getting immersed in the Drafthouse proceedings, but it does seem a little like a sideways move. Still, I'll be reading.
Looks like /Film. Devin's topics seem wide-ranging tho, so that could be fun/interesting.
Are you guys missing all the other links to things on the site that aren't about movies? That said, why wouldn't he keep writing about movies? Love him or hate him (I've done both), that's what he's good at.
Well, it's a terrible name ...

Tim League always sounds like a swell guy, though.

The way he spoke about it, there would be a web component but it wouldn't be the primary thing he was doing there. I mentioned it because I was curious if that was still the case, but its only the first few hours of the new site's existence.

Like Merriweather said, it feels like a lateral move. It just felt like this was building up to something more mainstream.

Yeah, and we're looking at the web component. If he unleashes a non-web component on the web, that'll be a neat trick.

And I guess I interpreted all the twitter hints differently, because it seemed like he was just tired of chasing scoops and wanted to write about what he wanted to write about. Which, based on his previous writings, would have been less mainstream.
Thanks for the link.

As for what I'm doing - Badass Digest is just a part of it. There's more to Badass that will launch in the months to come. But beyond that, I work for the larger Alamo brand - which includes Drafthouse Films, which is releasing FOUR LIONS. So I've been working for months now on the release of a major motion picture.

I don't think there is anything lateral about this.
Maybe he will also be organising more roadshows.
I just assume it looks like a lateral move to us, but it's a step up for him because $$$.

A GREAT film for you to get yourself going with. Now I'm very, very interested.
Can I also say that site looks like it was custom made for Phil.
Personally I was hoping Devin would be hosting a show about hilarious movie bloopers and pranks, but I guess I will settle for him writing about film.
It's not a lateral move. Good start. Looking forward to where it goes.

I'm not explaining myself very well. My thought had been there would be more on the website about what Devin was doing rather than Devin actually producing web content. Like you'd hear about projects he was involved with or movie things he was helping to make along with the occasional review or blog post. And based on what Devin just posted, that looks like what will be happening.
Considering 99% of the people who watch moves and/or read movie blogs have never (and probably will never) go to the Alama Drafthouse or meet anybody associated with it, I don't get the point of constantly mentioning it. It sounds like a fun place, I guess, but it only makes me feel like I'm not part of the target audience. Anybody get what I mean?

ETA: I've been reading about the AD for yearssss on AICN, and I still feel like it's a Lions Club-type thing.

Anyways, uhh, sure. I gotta admit, my first reaction was "...Oh. Oh, uh, okay." I figured, honestly, he was gonna go work for G4 and maybe set up or run a movie blog for them. That sounded more like a step up than this.

Looks like a place where the writers can write about whatever pleases them, and they seem to be good writers, so, uhm, yeah, that's cool I guess. I dunno about some of those articles though; if they're not too careful it's gonna end up looking like Devin's Tumblr account.
It seems like a pretty cool site actually, barring the name. The layout is nice, although very Collider like, but I like that setup a lot. I think Devins new job is working for the Alamo Drafthouse, not just web shit. I think thats why he said, it'd have a web component.

Edit: looks like he answered it himself. Heh.
Thanks for the clarification.

Alamo has big expansion plans. Countrywide, if I'm right.
Yeah, its a good start. I look forward to seeing where he goes with this

I'd kill for something like that here in Winnipeg.

Good for Devin. Looking forward to when the website gets its feet under it a little more.

But that could be changing - there's been talk of expanding the franchise ever since Tim League came back earlier in the year, with mention of Landmark as a model for expansion. I live in Philly, and I didn't have a Landmark here three years ago, but I do now.

The name makes perfect sense as an extension of the Alamo brand, though. One of its slogans is "Badass Cinema."

And those complaining about feeling excluded by constant references to the Alamo...did you read the welcome piece on the site? It seems that part of the site's mission is to carry the Alamo vibe out to the rest of the world. And don't forget that Tim League is running the whole company again with very real expansion plans. There will either be an Alamo near you someday, or they'll be releasing a film where you are.

It may seem lateral to some of you, but if you'd spent any time in League-run Alamo cinemas in Austin, it would sound like a dream job.

EDIT: thread moving too fast for iPhone posting. Someone already mentioned expansion plans.
Yeah, I've heard the rumblings about The Drafthouse going nationwide too. Before it was just in Austin, now they've got one (or 2) in San Antonio, and they were building one 30 minutes away from where I live, but at that point, the project was underfunded, and it never got finished. That really sucked.

The one I went to in San Antonio in February was really damn awesome, and cheers for them expanding.
An Alamo theater near me (Long Island) would get all my movie-going money if they enforce the no talking rule/cell phone ban.

I dog whispered him into making a site just for me. The article with the blueprints of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce gave me wood.
Great site. Not so hot on the name, but I've never heard the "Badass Cinema" slogan before. Sure it'll grow on me.

Good luck Devin, and I'm glad you found a gig so uniquely suited to you.
Good luck, Dev. FOUR LIONS is great. Hope it does well for y'all over at the Drafthouse.
Very cool. Congratulations and good luck, D.
Congratulations, Devin! Bookmarked and look forward to reading more.
Looks like a cool niche from what I always hear is a great brand. Looking forward to making an Austin pilgrimage one of these days.
Looks good! But...

There's a Landmark in Philly? I must go to it.

I'll be keeping up with the new site too.

All the Ritz theaters are Landmark now.

Devin who? This guy was in Star Trek? The new one?
The layout looks like ass, I'm not sure I like the name and every mention of the Alamo Drafthouse makes me shake my fist to the skies because in a hundred miles radius from my home there's not a single decent theatre., but the content is great, I'm glad that Devin is back and I count four pictures of Warren Oates on the main page, so there's really no space for complaints.

Congratulations for the involvement with Four Lions, Devin!

It's just that it was hinted that it would be BIG. Noy bad so far, but the name is fucking horrible. At least Badass of the Week is running with the gag and is the premium badass site.
It looks... like Cinematical. Or Collider. Or Slashfilm.

Well, there's the rest of the thread to explain all that. It's not like you were ever going to give this a fair shake in the first place (not judging; I'm half-Sicilian, I "get" grudges), but I think it's a pretty solid day of launch. I don't think it's offensive looking and it loads quickly. What else do you need a site to "look" like?

And he just made an editorial about Guccione's death make sense for the site. And I already bought that Jap Jason Voorhees toy. Shit Doug, you were right!
I always liked his porfessional output, and while I think the guy is a cunt, it's his work I look at. There's good stuff in there and it's worth to take a look.

But beside the name, Devin's Badass Wall of Fame feels a lot like what BotW does.

Here's what I mean:

Devin

Badass of the Week.

One is way more humorous than the other, but still...
One's a good idea; one's a well-written article. Say what you are trying to say.

I dislike the Badass name because it will no doubt turn into "Fatass Digest" by mouth-breathing retards who think they're being clever.
Both sites have a different approach, but Devin's article seems like a regular feature, which is what I'm referring to.
