Devin's New Gig... - Page 2

Pairing "ass" and "digest" in your site's banner seems like a miscalculation.
I love that the new lobotomized, movie-releasing Devin rails against cynicism, pessimism, viciousness and negativity.

But oh the hit count!
But Martin, you're latching on to one area of a site that looks to have pretty diverse content, and it's barely hours into launch day.

I'd say give it time and a chance to form a more solid identity. There are going to be other contributors/writers too.

And once more about the name...it's their brand, and has been for a long time. I think it's not going to change:

I'm not latching on it, but the combination of feature and name instantly reminded me of the other site. Beside that, it's an alright website. We'll see how it mature and if it can be among the best on the Web.

It was pretty funny.

As for what I'm doing - Badass Digest is just a part of it. There's more to Badass that will launch in the months to come. But beyond that, I work for the larger Alamo brand - which includes Drafthouse Films, which is releasing FOUR LIONS. So I've been working for months now on the release of a major motion picture.

I don't think there is anything lateral about this.
Your facebook output as of late makes so much more sense now. Good luck man, excited to see what comes next
post #58 of 168
Looks really good. Congrats, Devin. Enjoyed the Wolverine collum quite a bit.
Working for Drafthouse? Nice. Seems like a great fit to me.
Didn't Devin once say that he was the only writer on CHUD who had no aspirations to be in the film business?
One thing to work on distributing great independent films and another one to write/produce films.
Re: Alama Drafthouse plans

Ah, well, in that case, cool. Like I said, it does sound like a fun place. I imagine NYC is too "busy" to get one anytime soon, though. *sad face*

I like Devin's writing, so I'll be bookmarking and adding it to my daily visits, regardless (ex. Beaks @ AICN). It was just a few observations I was making. Good luck to him!
Sorry some of you guys don't like it/me. Thanks for the kind words from those who do. This is our launch day, so we're still evolving. Feedback is appreciated, even when couched in nastiness.

At any rate, I got a really nice email from Warren Oates' daughter about his inclusion in the Hall of Fame. MartinS can bitch all he likes, but this has already made the entire site a success for me.

Yeah, this is pretty much my reaction. I'm not wild on the name, but I don't dislike it as much as some people. It's certainly not enough to turn me away or become a problem.

I remember that (from the farewell Advocate?) too, Ryan, but I suppose a man can change his mind.

There isn't a film critic alive who doesn't have some aspirations there, I guarantee you.
For the record, I didn't change my mind. I began negotiations for this job before Tim League bought FOUR LIONS. When that happened I got involved in the release, but from a marketing point of view. I have no interest in making movies.
I was just about to say, there's a huge difference between having filmmaking aspirations and working behind the scenes for a film's release. It's like saying Renn wants to be a novelist, because he's working on the Grim Reaper.
Wish Devin nothing but the best of luck but considering how much he hates these boards, I'm surprised to see him in this thread. Guess you have to find ways to shill wherever you can find them.

Or maybe he just wanted to clarify some misperceptions about what he's doing, rather than allow speculation to lead people to the wrong conclusions? It's not like he was banned when he left.
No, nor was that implied. I just remember how much he slagged these boards. If you don't like them (and he certainly flat out said as much numerous times) then why keep coming back?

I'm sorry I pointed out that your column had a extremely similar concept to another popular website whose name is similar to your's.

And as Howard said; why do you remotely care what I think about it?
I think he was fed up with a few trolls on the boards, not the boards themselves.
I don't care, I just don't like being misrepresented, especially when CHUD still comes up most frequently in Google searches for my name.
The idea of the Drafthouse becoming a franchise is pretty cool...and I'm liking the new site. Nice, clean layout and a shitload of content already for a day. Bookmarked, and it'll be a daily (if not more often) check for me.
It's only tangentially related(fave writers leaving frequented sites for new sites), but I already like BD(BAD?) about 500 times more than Hitfix. I'm pleasantly surprised by the amount/variety/quality of content already on display.

Best of luck, Devin. Looking good so far.
Congrads on the new gig Devin. You should check out Chris Morris's other output if you get the chance.

Oh and ditto on the OMNI sentiment. Fuck that was great mag.

Oh man. The new Badass site has a nice, clean layout. I've tried Hitfix so many times, but their design and layout just irks me. Feels way too busy and cluttered.
The only way I go to hitfix is by a direct link from Drew's twitter feed. Other than that it's way too cluttered and a hassle to navigate.

As far as badass digest goes, I'm psyched to get the caliber of writing Devin focused on movies in regards to other subjects.
First off Congrats on the new gig.

However I read to many movie websites as it is so it's going to take something really special to sway me. Plus I seriously doubt the Drafthouse will ever expand outside the USA.

Which is a shame.
I wish the Drafthouse all the best in its expansion, but it feels like Madstone all over again. At least the homebase will probably stay intact.
If nothing else, I wish Drafthouse could expand their cell-phone philosophy to every theater chain.
Oh man, I love Tim League's blog about that.

Seconded, and I dig the roulette-news. The design is similar to /, a site I visit daily since Russ moved on.

Glad to read Devin reviews again. Happy day.
I'm psyched about this, as a Drafthouse fan and an Austin resident, but most of all as a fan of Devin's writing. It's good to have him back as a daily web presence.

Good luck with everything, Devin.
I don't like the layout of the site at all (too much white, needs more color), but I'm glad Devin is involved in shepherding quality movies into theater. Looking forward to seeing Four Lions.
Devin just wrote a sterling takedown/tribute of Maximum Overdrive. I'll be keeping up with the new site. Fun.
I have a warm spot for MAXIMUM OVERDIRVE, which is why I was happy, then sad, then tearful after reading Devin's review. You heartless bastard.

Seriously, it's good to see your writing again.
The new site is actually mobile friendly. I'm not sure why I was shocked to see that. I look forward to the changes CHUD is making in that direction, but it sure made it easier at lunch time to read the Warren Oates article.
Yeah, I tried it on my LG LX600, which isn't precisely a smart phone ("mildly clever," maybe), and it looks fine. Just the sort of site for browsing while on the train.

And having been teased by the Roadshow presentation of "Dirty Harry" last summer, I'd love to see Alamo here in the S.F. Bay Area.
Best of luck on the new site, Devin.

I'm very happy to have a regular place to read your writings again. Even if it's not here.
Looks cool so far. Wonder if they're looking for writers.
I like what I see so far, and I'm glad to have Devin's writing back on a regular basis. Really love the write-up on Two Lane Blacktop, which is a movie I wish more people would watch.

I like the idea of cover more than just films, though articles on beer are going to be wasted on certain gluten-intolerant members of its readership...

Congrats and best of luck (for the thousandth time in the thread it seems) on the new gig, the Alamo expansion and the release of Four Lions!

You could just stop googling yourself...

Good luck in the new venture!

Looks great. Very best of luck with it all Devin.

All other considerations aside, good on Devin for getting so involved in pushing Four Lions in the states.

Yeah, speaking just for myself, the combo of the horrible name and heavy Alamo association makes it feel like a niche thing that isn't really for me, whether the actual content is or not. The writing itself seems to be an evolution of what Devin did on chud, in which case it should be worth a look. I mean, this isn't a Hitfix situation where I can barely even stand to look at the site long enough to find any good writing on it, so I guess I'll give it a chance.

But same as you I feel like I've got more than enough movie sites on my plate already. I'd rather have one brilliant one instead of a half dozen quite good ones, and I'm finding it hard to picture this one standing tall above the crowd instead of just joining it. Though again, not being called 'Badass Digest' would probably have helped with that.
Horrible name? Man, I don't envy you guys sitting on the outside, faces pressed longingly against the window, still trying to cover by making fun of the great fucking party going on inside. "Alamo Drafthouse: Malaysia" will happen one day.

EDIT: Unless you mean you don't find Devin's new blogsite appealing because of its name. Then, to each his own, I guess. But I still affirm my position that the Drafthouse will take over the world one day.

Yeah... I'm not getting the name hate. It's an extension of Alamo Drafthouse... "badass" has been a part of the Alamo lexicon for as long as I can remember.

It makes sense.

Also, good on ya, Devin.
