Inevitable streaming-only service draws closer to being a reality.

One thing I find interesting about the utter success of Netflix's instant watch is how the studios lack of vision for content on demand left a huge hole for Netflix to basically go in and define on their own terms.

Bring on this option, Netflix. I've had a DVD on my desk for months, unwatched.

This is all well and good, but all I want to know when all the SNL is coming.

I like the $8.99 a month 1 dvd out at a time/unlimited streaming that they offer. I have that. You get your 1 dvd out of the queue, and you can watch as much streaming as you want. That's a damn great deal.

I've had a copy of The Room that's been sitting there for about 2 weeks unwatched. I'll be seeing it probably tomorrow, but I don't think I could have a dvd sitting around unwatched for months, or even a year.

I recommend that you watch THE ROOM with some other people Rene. By yourself, I think it would just be painful.

The real benefit of the instant streaming is that I can watch way more stuff that way. When I don't have to wait the two 2 1/2 days it takes to get new DVD's, I can watch way more stuff. And I don't have to try to guess what I'm going to be interested in watching ahead of time.

Being able to browse and pick makes the streaming functionality a nice upgrade. Once they get more HD content, I'll really start wondering if I need the discs at all.

I think that the studios are shooting themselves in the foot here though. The subscriptions/free add-on nature of Netflix Instant really hurts the perceived value of a streamed movie.

It is. The utter joy of its badness runs out of steam within an hour by yourself.

In many ways though, that ship has already sailed. If the studios had decided vertically to embrace the future early on instead of trying to protect the past, then they would be in a better position now.

Even with others the Room can be painful. The long and terrible sex scenes in particular test ones endurance. Only Tommy Wisseau can make you hate sex. But I think even these parts contribute to the humour of it all.

I want to sign up and use it on my US xbox live account. So does anybody know if one can use an American netflix account overseas?

I need this now. If it could be somewhere around $5.99, maybe $6.99, it would be a real relief. I mostly use streaming now, and had several discs sitting around for 4 months or more.

Even when they do introduce a streaming only service, I can't see switching from the 1-at-a-time plan. It's, what, $10? Even if I watch 2 "discs" a month, it's still worth the couple of bucks I would save dropping to a streaming only service.

Also, there are still going to be titles that I don't necessarily want to buy on disc, but I want to see in "real" HD, of which there really isn't a viable online option yet.

I mentioned it to my friend, and he's heard of it's badness as well, so we're going to watch it together. I can only imagine how truly terrible the movie is.

The real issue is that the streaming service kind of feeds my TV show binging/marathoning personality. All too often I start watching a show and need to watch like 5 seasons as quickly as possible.
