Hlyfck it actually happened?

Perfect.

They only mention eight dwarves and make it sound like that's it. I really hope that since there's no mention of the Elven King or Bard or Beorn that there's more dwarves to be cast. I'd hate to see them cut down the number of dwarves -- there being thirteen of them is the catalyst for bringing Bilbo along in the first place, to avoid having an unlucky number.

I think this is just the beginning.

I HATE throwing stories out that fast. I wish they would announce these things are a more sensible time!
It IS sensible in New Zealand!
Yeah, but this came from press release at Warner Bros. That's California time!

Hell, I just went out for an hour to get my lunch and missed this for chrissake.

Freeman is Bilbo.

Freeman IS BILBO.

God damn that's just made my movie year.

Wow, an actual fan casting came true! Is it Christmas?

No but it was my birthday this week and I'm completely egotistical enough to believe the fates have aligned to give me a better present than this Tolkien nerd could have hoped for.

We got Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach and now this. I'd start focusing on who we really want Nathan Fillion to play next, we're on a roll.
Martin Freeman's been my choice since 2008, so I'm beside myself that they managed to work around his schedule for BBC's Sherlock and sign him.

Out of the rumored actors for Smaug, my vote goes to Bill Nighy. I'd love that.

I have to admit, when it comes to the dwarves, the only actor I'm familiar with is Armitage. Very good actor, though I never would have guessed him for Thorin. He's a lot younger than what I was expecting. Guess he must have really impressed Jackson.

As for the other dwarves, anyone familiar with these actors? Good or bad?

I love it, I'm already getting flashbacks to Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyds photos being splashed across the net while people desperately tried to work out who they were and if they'd seen them before.

I am so fucking geekily excited right now. More so than I've been in a very long time.
I think my perceptions are skewed by the Rankin-Bass Hobbit, because all the dwarf actors seem young to me, but there's no real reason for them to be old.

I'm hoping against hope we somehow get McShane for Smaug, but that would just be greedy.

Honest out of nowhere confession: because of the original trilogy's trifecta of wintertimes, I can't help but associate end of year cold/christmas signifiers/etcetera with screaming orcs and Howard Shore. I always seem to forget this, though, because I'm actually surprised (even though I shouldn't be} to find myself actually excited for this.

Well I remember that, in the book, Fili and Kili were considerably young in comparison to the other dwarves.

Either way, I don't think it'll matter how young these guys look, as their faces will be mostly covered in hair and prosthetics.

1) It will be interesting to see how Jackson juggles a dozen characters with similar designs and rhyming names. He did a great job on the trilogy but he has been known since to succumb to indulgence and bloat.

2) Sooooooo... no Chris Tucker then? Hurm.
That's pretty awesome! Freeman looks perfect for Bilbo, and while it was a pipe dream that Sir Ian Holm might have done it (serious, serious pipedream)....I really like the look of this guy. I really, really do.

And DAMN. Those first three names will be some hot dwarves. Very different from the typical dwarf-type, which most of the other actors listed seem to fit (older, grizzled). I mean, I'm sure Glimli was supposed to be a younger dwarf in LotR....so if these gents stay so....pretty (and beardless/lightly bearded), that will definitely be a change.

Yay!
I like this so very, very much. And Bill Nighy as Smaug would be nifty, but I LOVE Dickson's idea of McShane . . .

Heh

Heeehehehehehehehehehe

Christ, I'm just getting more and more excited the more I think about this.

I think it's because its not only the news I'd hoped for but it means this is real. It's really truly happening.

This is it, the last property that's so incredibly close to my heart getting the big screen treatment - and many of the people that brought my favourite films of all time to the screen are returning to make it happen.

I think I'm getting the vapors.

Apologies, I just simply do not have the capacity to remain grownup and cool in the face of this news right now.

Sticking to my guns on this: Trailer, or it ain't happening.

What about a picture of Martin Freeman's trailer?

Fuckin A my fellow Tolkien geek friend.

Fuckin A.

(I was waiting for you to get here)

Seriously if I wasn't at work right now I'd be dancing a fucking jig.

I'm glad we're all sort of mutually overcome by nerdiness. It's so funny -- casting that we all feel we independently invented was who Peter Jackson wanted all along.

I am counting down an announcement to Bard, though. That's who I thought Armitage would be when I heard he was in the cast. I would actually like to see Gerard Butler do it -- he's got such a similar look to Sean Bean and Viggo Mortensen that it feels rugged and right.

Kevin McKidd would be awesome too. Or Ray Stevenson. Bard the Bowman has to be a MAN.

There were rumours of Michael Fassbender, David Tennent and James Nesbitt all being in talks - maybe Bard?

You're preachin' to the converted over here mate. My man crush on him is matched only by the one I have on Tom Hardy.

I guess I had better get around to re-reading this again for the first time since 1979.
the fancasting for Kevin McKidd & Fassbender as Bard makes me grin from ear to ear!

On another note...McKellen has always been verbal about wanting to be in THE HOBBIT. Is there any reason for concern that he wasn't part of that first wave of casting news? I'm sure it's no big deal, but my geek bubble is swelling after reading that article & if it bursts I'm gonna be all sad & stuff.

Serkis wasn't announced either but I'd be shocked if he, McKellen and people like Howard Shore aren't involved.

Awesome news! Freeman is perfect for Bilbo, and I am finally starting to get excited (hopeful?) for this film to come to life.

Can't wait to see the first photos!!

Point taken, sir!
And just like that, renewed vigor to cheer for this project.

Amazing.
I love Fassbender as much as any heterosexual male possibly could but I think I'd faint if McKidd was cast as Bard. If there ever was a voice meant for commanding people into battle, it was his.
Didn't McKellan say 'fuck it, I'm sticking with my current stage work' not too long after Del Toro left? Though if the production is moving to London, that might make it easier for him since he won't be required to move to another hemisphere for over a year.

I think he's attached. On some level they probably thought that 2+ years of McKellen saying "I'm playing Gandalf again!!" was probably enough. But they should have mentioned him just to soothe fan fears.

McKellen always seems to be chatting with Empire about The Hobbit, I imagine we'll know VERY soon if he is or isn't involved.

I feel filming in NZ is just as, if not more important than this casting. What the hell, unions?

I know. I keep hoping they will see reason. It sounds like there is still a chance...but it sucks.

The only thing is, I can see a lot of this filming in soundstages (the spiders, Smaug's cave, Mirkwood) and so it probably won't make a ton of difference. Couldn't they use some stock footage of New Zealand during "journey" scenes, and make it merge a little better?

Still. Hobbiton is in New Zealand and my heart says it can't be stuffed into Hampshire, even if it WAS supposed to be southern England in spirit.

Now the wait will TRULY kill me.

I need to forget about this and stop reading news on the subject... then wake up when it's time

Not at all. Just last month he said he was waiting for a contract.

Rob Kazinsky was the best thing about Brit soap Eastenders during the two years he was in it. He's a pretty great glowering lady's man type.
As a Kiwi who loved LOTR I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. This is big news in NZ at the moment (the union thing that is) but there is still talk that Jackson will sort it out and keep production down under. I imagine this will cause a stir.

As for the cast, well Mark Hadlow is semi-known in NZ as a stage and sitcom actor, I think he was in King Kong, and he has a very dwarvish/hobbitish look about him.
Good, a local. What's the deal over there? Is Jackson trying to pay less than union salary or did the LOTR money made the union ask for a bigger cut?
Good news, but I think one of the funniest things about this is that one of mercaneries from RAMBO, Graham McTavish, also the treacherous russian from 24, is playing a hobbit.
I'm not actually in NZ at the moment, but seems like the NZ actors' union, under guidance from its Australian counterpart, got members to blacklist the Hobbit production until standardised contracts could be negotiated. But this was widely seen as 'bullying', most publicly by Jackson, and he warned that it made NZ look like an unstable work environment to Warners. So the blacklist was lifted but Jackson has said it may be too late, that Warners could easily find other locations in Europe, and that NZ actors had taken a stupidly aggressive approach.

Jackson has accused the Australian union of trying to sabotage the production out of jealousy, and the NZ union of being naive in going along with it.
