SPIELBERGPOCALYPSE

Thread Starter
Steven to direct Robopocalypse.

Fucking terrible name, for starters.
Yeah, even Robot Apocalypse would be better.

And isn't Burton's Monsterpocalypse slated to come out the same year?
Don't care for the name, but Spielberg directing a ROBOTS ATTACK HUMANITY movie? I'm there. I hope he doesn't try to attach any kind of social message to it, as he's wont to do in his later films. Just goofy robot carnage.
Oh, lord, now the internets predilection for dumbass, robot-centric jokes will now increase tenfold.

Sympathetic Palestinians who just want to grow their fig trees. Can't we all just get along?

So Spielberg is re-making Battlestar Galactica? Cool.

Just as long as the protagonist's son doesn't die.

But we think he does right up to the last scene
post #12 of 30
Can't believe people actually thought Cruise's son was dead after that scene, which was essentially Spielberg ripping himself off with the ambiguous fate/late minute confirmation scene from Jaws. That people are mad about that on top of it all just blows me away
post #13 of 30
A cursory glance at my sig should tell you that this subject matter is right up my alley. Cautiously excited!
Can't say this is what I'd be most excited to see Speilberg tackle, but I'll reserve judgement till I hear more specifics about the plot and the intended tone of the movie. Still though, I'm unsure what to make of this news item: is this definitely a movie he is making? I'd appreciate some examination of the likelihood of The Beard moving forward on this project. He has so many lined up, is this one that's he's actually set his sights on getting made? Or is it more vaporware?
So does anyone else fully believe that this film will never get made? And if so, it wont be directed by Spielberg.
Good, another movie about a robot uprising. We don't get enough of those. I hope Spielberg does a zombie film after that.
I still want Lincoln and Interstellar. But especially Interstellar.
So why is it not shooting until 2012 and does Stevie plan on squeezing in another project between now and then? He has two flicks that are practically finished that are due in late 2011 (Tintin and War Horse)............but Robopocalypse won't hit until 2013? I'm hoping it has more to do with finishing the script and/or him taking a vacation..................but I have a dreadful suspicion that Indy V might be the reason. George Lucas isn't really doing shit right now and Harrison's schedule seems to have a huge open spot in it next year.

I hope that either I am completely wrong or they have a hell of a script this time. Or that he's filming a project with a completed screenplay (ala Interstellar).

I don't get Spielberg...

apparently he gets first dibs on all the best scripts hot off the printer...yet the guy hasn't knocked one out of the park since, what...Schindler's List?

Seriously, have you hit your head recently?
Part of me hopes this is all a smokescreen and what is actually happening is he has kicked Micheal Bay off of Transformers 3 and is directing it himself.

With a better plot.

Fixed.

Ambler may be scrambled, but it's fair to ask; with his choice of any project in Hollywood, why is Spielberg discarding two really interesting ideas (Interstellar and The Chicago 7 film) in favor of Tintin and a flick about a fucking horse?
Well, the reason behind the Chicago 7 movie falling apart is pretty well documented. As far as I know, Interstellar still hasn't moved past the concept/outline stage; I don't think there's even a screenwriter actively on board.

As for Tintin, I guess we're going to have this dumb argument pop up until a trailer finally drops; suffice to say, worldwide it's a huge property, and Spielberg's been a lifelong fan. And for War Horse, well, as long as it's good who gives a fuck if it's about a horse? Or are you one of those kids who pissed and moaned his way through sixth grade because he didn't want to read Black Beauty?
I read that,Jonathan Nolan did in fact finish a script for Intersteller. But that means jack and shit if it never sees the light of day.
Nolan did a pass at it three years ago. Like I said, there's not really an active screenwriter on the project.

Yeah seriously, is this the prevailing wisdom on War Horse around here? With the premise alone, it has the potential to be sweeping, epic and a real moving heart-warmer.

No that doesn't sound like something Steven fuckin Spielberg would excel at at all.
Spielberg has a super aggressive development regime. He options and develops a fuckload of material and is often a lot of creative people's first "big" Hollywood contact (in person, via phone).

Whatever project is ready to roll when he's free he takes. When a project sits idle for too long it goes stale and gets dropped (logistics are like that and Hollywood is about Buzz more than anything). Many of the things he drops, probably can't get financed with another director attached or get a guaranteed release in cinemas even. The most important thing to people working in Hollywood these days seem to be all about "be working on a greenlit picture with an established opening date". Nobody wants Gilliam's life (not that he couldn't fix that with a 5 minute phone-call). Scott's the same. From what I've read he won't do a movie that takes more than 6 months prep before shooting starts - seemed like he was willing to break that for this big vision of the Alien prequels, but then went limp after the studio balked.

I echo a lot of the comments here. The title for this sucks.

I always look forward to Steven Spielberg films and War Horse sounds pretty great to me.

Its amazing to see all that he's attached to though.
