BURKE AND HARE

I'm really, really, pulling for this one.

John Landis has made some of my all time favourite films (and contributed to my all time favourite Hollywood tragedy) but he's been in a massive slump for about Two Decades now (depending on how you view INNOCENT BLOOD).

The cast is fantastic. Pegg, Serkis, Fisher, Lee, Curry, Wilkinson are some of my favourite actors and Jessica Hynes and Reece Shearsmith have been great in various TV shows.

The story it's based on is fantastic and grotesque and compelling and so easy to adapt into a feature.

So, I'm really hoping that this turns out good. It opens over here on 27th October so I might have an opinion to give in a few days times. Just wondering if anyone had heard any news?

It's....okay. There's a LOT wrong with it, but it's affable and the cast all do good work and Landis occasionally does something nice. The character dynamics in the third act are FUCKED, though - surely it should be the weaselly Serkis finding redemption in death rather than the genial Pegg?

I found it kind of adorable. But I liked Pegg biting it in the end. One last big joke in before the credits. But you're right. I don't think I could suggest this to anyone that isn't even a little bit pre-disposed to liking it.

I think the film's too woolly and cuddly to get away with that misanthropic streak at the end. In principle I like the idea of the lone good guy swinging for his crimes whilst all the dullards and assholes get ahead, but the film's not quite tart enough in its depiction of humanity's general shittiness to pull it off. I still liked it - any film  that lets people like Tim Curry, Christopher Lee and Ronnie Corbett bring on the ham is okay by me. But yeah, it's probably not an objectively "good" film.

Of note: John Woodvine doesn't seem to have aged a day in 30 years.

It's woolly and cuddly towards some pretty heinous stuff though. Even Pegg's fate is presented as kind of OK.

Enjoyed it. I was predisposed, due to cast, director, subject matter and time period. Lots of good will from me from the get-go. Some funny gags, but never gets to CLUE (written by Landis) quality for funny or SWEENEY TODD (1800s class struggle and murder) quality for visual texture. A solid B-.
