SACRED COWS OF HOLLYWOOD list main discussion - Page 7

To try and bridge the last two cows I'd have to say that remaking 2001 simply is inconceivable. How can a director even think that he can touch a movie that tells the entire history of mankind in a single cut and then proceeds to top it?
How about a mid-quel in which we see what happens between the cut from the bone to the space station!? I smell franchise!!!

Day 20 = David looks at It's a Wonderful Life http://chud.com/articles/articles/26...-20/Page1.html
post #304 of 328
Loved the PRINCESS BRIDE entry. One of my all time favorite films, I first watched it as part of a BIG BROTHER BIG SISTER program event. It looks like it was shot on sound stages for the most part, but somehow that's become part of the films charm. The perfect storm of casting that Reiner managed to wrangle for his Pirates and Princesses opus can most likely never be repeated, so I'd have to concur that no one should ever bother

Highlights for me include:

The torture machine -- that is seriously terrifying when you're small
The drinking duel -- hilarious edge of your seat excitement!
The Kiss -- though it's actually out shadowed in my mind by Wesley's appearance when he suddenly shows up alive and well in the castle just in time to prevent Buttercup's suicide attempt

Additionally, the "Offer me money!" speech gives me chills to this day. Mandy Patinkin earned immortality with that role, and I don't see how you could ever improve on it. Hire an actual Spaniard? What would be the point?

The reason Its A Wonderful Life became a Christmas classic is because it was public domain. As a cynic I felt the need to point that out.

For the record, It's a Wonderful Life was remade, in 1977, with Marlo Thomas.

One of my favorite movies ever.

I don't want it remade but I really, really wish they still made movies like this. I could see Sorkin going for it, though to which degree of success I don't know.

Day 22 + Elizabeth = The African Queen http://chud.com/articles/articles/26...-22/Page1.html
post #311 of 328
I only saw African Queen about three months ago. Boats, jungle, and Bogey; these are a few of my favourite things. The rest of it is great too. Loved it.

The WWPDD section made me feel ill. I'd rather tangle with the leeches and dengue fever than even think about that prospect.
I skipped reading The African Queen entry because I haven't seen it. In my defense, when I was a child, it was on our Beta cassette that also featured The Ewok Adventure, and after a plethora of mornings having to fast forward past it, I accidentally trained myself to avoid it on a physiological level. Time to revisit it.

As for Cuckoo's... man the thing I always remember, other than this being one of the first "real" movies I appreciated (notice my Ewok Adventure childhood above) is how great Brad Douriff was and is. Between this movie, Exorcist 3 and Two Towers, he's one of those guys that I really wished had reached the A-list. Based on the ending and on the bizarre recent defenses of shock therapy, I don't think it's in any danger of being remade.

Cuckoo's Nest is untouchable for cinema, but I saw a stage version with Gary Sinise and Amy Morton that was pretty damn good, too.

The World Series scene is one of my favorite "Fuck Yeah!" scenes in any film . . . and I don't even like baseball!

While not quite my favourite Jack performance (that has to go to either Chinatown or Five Easy Pieces), this film as a whole is simply cinema at it's finest.

"Back when the oscars actually meant something" - well said Nick. I dream of those days returning.

Either way this film is a hard watch for me, I love it to pieces, but the last twenty minutes literally breaks my fucking heart each and every time I watch it.

A perfect untouchable film.

Agreed. I recently saw OFOTCN at part of the secret cinema programme in London. It was shown on a big screen in an abandoned hospital, with all the audience dressed in dressing gowns. Rather good fun, and of course the film is masterful.

Nonsense. A Sandler comedy remake would be awesome.

It's actually been unofficially remade a lot of times. Especially on television.

Great stuff, Andre, that's a way more interesting argument against remaking the film than my usual "It's Carpenter! DON'T YOU FUCKERS DARE!" stance.

The news that a remake might be coming sooner rather than later had me with veins bulging out of my temples in anger since it hit the web, but a few days ago I visualized Donal Logue as Nada, strolling alongside some shitty bumtown, and felt somewhat at peace with the whole idea. Of course that will never happen and, even if it did, it would certainly not account for content, so fuck that noise.
When you mentioned this was going to be your pick for the list I actually rolled my eyes and let out a sigh.

Lesson #1 - never underestimate Andre

I liked the way you presented your reasoning why They Live should never be remade. In other words, great stuff.
I had always been kind of open to a They Live before mostly because I always felt a little cheated with the film. I love it to death, but I had heard the story that Carpenter had been provided funding for a single film and was given (I think) 15 million. Instead of investing it all into They Live, he split the cash and half and made Prince of Darkness with the other 7.5 mil. Prince of Darkness sucks so I was always a little miffed about that. But after reading this I totally swung from indifferent to No Fucking Way! This movie fucking rocks and no remake would ever be able to capture what Carpenter did. Plus there's not a single motherfucker out there that can live up to Keith David.
Aaaah Dre, your every perfect point as to why this film could not be made today without being completely dragged through the mud of a hyper-partisan 24 hour corporate controlled news cycle is exactly why when this remake is finally made it'll either be a disaster or a point-missing mess.

...and you're quite correct, Meg Fosters eyes were creepy as all get-out.
I suspect that the political subtexts of a remake would fly further under the radar than you all might expect.
I don't know how you make it without inditing the media as pacifiers. That seems to be the central conceit of the film.
Wasn't Foster's character a journalist too?

If Carpenter was any more overt about the media's role in all this he'd have a five minute segment actually spelling the movie's point out, on a blackboard.

We're done!

The wrap-up/index page can be found here:

If you're someone inclined to sharing items on your various SpaceFaces and YouBooks and TwiTubes, this would be a good one to blast around. Good into for folks unfamiliar with the site or with what we do, I think.

Totally with Eileen and the other chap. Opened this thinking "eh, They Live is great, but it's not like it....no, nope...yeah, Dre's totally right."
