A COUPLE OF OPTIONS FOR MICHAEL MANN'S RETURN FROM TV

After his HBO show Luck begins, Mann expects to go big-screen again.

I would do back-flips everywhere if he did Agincourt.

As somebody that loves Miami Vice I will fully admit the man hasn't made an all around good movie since The Insider. Colaterall is dead air when Foxx and Cruise don't share the screen.

Not very excited about what he does next.

Still want him for Don Winslow's California Fire and Life.

So looking forward to Luck. Also, loved the bit in the Deadline piece about the personalities on set.

And really, Public Enemies is the first big let down for me with Mann. Really hoping though to see him get back to his A game with whatever is next. Would love to read the scripts for the DiCaprio thing that dies as well as the Will Smith thing which seemed to go away.

I like bits and pieces of VICE but think it just kind of deflates.. the main bad guy is never delt with, he just disappears.

Anyway, I think ALI is a good movie, and it was made after INSIDER

I'd forgotten LUCK was even happening, so I'm excited to see that, and whatever Mann does next

AGINCOURT sounds promising. Last time Mann messed with a wartime period piece, we got LAST OF THE MOHICANS & that's one of my favorites that he's done, overall.

I'm almost as tired of mobster movies as I am of zombies, so I hope that's not his next project. Agnicourt and Luck sound great, though. And I really hope he lays off the hi-def work. It just doesn't work with his style.

I really do not get the scorn for Public Enemies, particularly if you like Vice, as its the 30's gangster version of that film, dropped right in, you fill the blanks, no hand holding. And the hate for the digital I also do not get, the night shoot out is pretty f'ing solid, and that scene where he lands in the Tri Motor is gorgeous.

Its a film that is a lot more noteworthy and satisfying than say the A Team, which is so by the numbers it hurts, but alas

Also no mention of the Sci Fi flick on the plate which was mentioned in the LA times article?

The night time shootout is awful. Even if it wasn't noisy, washed-out, and ugly with an unfinished sound effects track, it would still be poorly staged and messy.

Huh, and there I was thinking I was being helpful in the Comments thread.

Agreed...it was a very slapdash and poorly put together scene.

I assume you were the commenter on the century thing, in which case relax, you were. When I fix a typo and a comment is suddenly referring to nothing, it makes the comment look stupid. If the commenter was being an asshole about it I'll leave it there for that very reason, otherwise I'll remove it.

Oh please let it be Agincourt, and please let it be film.

Agreed, time for Mann to get back into a meticulous period epic.

I guarantee you Luck doesn't get past a second season. Milch plus Hoffman was trouble from day one scene one.

Did you hear anything specific Rath?

And am I the only one - apart from Sharpe - who liked PUBLIC ENEMIES? I liked the odd digital look. The action was good – not up to HEAT standards but not as terrible as people say – and Depp was excellent.

The only flaw was that the other characters in his gang weren’t fleshed out enough, apart from Babyface Nelson and the guy from BROTHERHOOD. It’s definitely worth a look.

I’d be happy for Mann to either of these, though the mob story sounds like a better fit. But the last time Mann did period we got MOHICANS. I’d be happy for a movie as good as that.

This, this, THIS. I know VICE gets a lot of love in these parts, but I think MOHICANS is superior in every way. Since we'll never get Mann's take on Thermopylae, I'd like to see his take on another pivotal historic battle.

Apparently the bluray of MOHICANS is excellent. Fixed some of the problems of the director's cut.

Just bought Mohicans but haven't watched it yet. I liked Public Enemies for what it was. It was no Heat, Collateral or Insider but I didn't expect it to be.
