Sulu...HELLLLLO!?!

And I thought Ensign Crusher was queer.

I say combine the Muslim and the fruit and be done with it.

Also, where are the gays? GENE RODDENBERRY WAS A HOMOPHOBE.
We've had some disabled people (Geordi), but in the future spinal injuries and the like can be fixed

There is a whole history to that. There was supposed to be a gay character in FIRST CONTACT, but the part got rewritten at the last minute

"Mixed opinions" is not the proper nomenclature. They prefer "biracial opinions".

Progressive!

In my defense, it was tonally and intellectually consistent with the thread!

To be fair that would be a far less retarded discussion. I can see a lot of people finding it problematic that a show concerned with presenting an inclusive, utopian vision of society would have no gay presence whatsoever, or even have their existence subtly implied.

No, I agree. It would be much more interesting to discuss.

This is where I'd link to that gay-themed fan-made Trek web series but look for it your damn selves.

There was also TNG ep where Riker fell for a unisex race that dealt with a bunch of gay mentaphor, or something, but they changed it.
Wasn't there an eppisode with Riker falling for a man/woman charater from a race that wasn't supposed to be ether.
David Gerrold wrote an episode featuring a gay couple early on in the TNG run, but Roddenberry told him to remove them. Thus the lack of David Gerrold for the remainder of the series.

I wonder if Roddenberry knew that Gerrold was gay then. Because if he did, that was a bastardly move. If he didn't, it was just ignorant and bigoted.

And that story has been novelized as part of Gerrold's "Star Wolf" series.

Man, no they can't.

Worf had his spine crushed and it was only through an experimental treatment that he wasn't permanently paralyzed. And even then it was only because he was Klingon that the treatment didn't permanently kill him.

If you're going to make claims about Star Trek, then you should bloody well watch Star Trek.

The Trill race were also introduced in a TNG episode where Beverly Crusher's Trill boyfriend lost his host body. The Trill wanted to continue the relationship after getting a new, female, host body. The break-up was awkward, but about as respectful as 80's television ever got toward handling gay issues.

I'm afraid to say Kate you have dissapointed me.
This is a point that a few of us have kept repeating, and it's fallen on deaf ears, Kate, but equating Middle Easterners with Muslims is an ethnic slur. It's a slur that you insist on sticking with no matter how many times it's been pointed out, and in the crazy roller coaster that has been your membership on this board, this is the most genuinely offensive goddamn thing you've ever posted here.

I'd love for you to meet the Lebanese family I'm friends with, the Al-Khouris, and keep insisting to those Othrodox Christians that they're really Muslims, and that identifying them as Muslims is your way of promoting understanding.

Your racism isn't what the trolls on the board pick on you for, Kate, but it's damn sure killing any sympathy I might have had.

Actually, DS9 did a similar story with Dax. The episode ended with Trek's first lesbian kiss. Terry Farrell really went all the way with it, too.

Also see (or really, don't, it's boring) "Blood and Fire", which was adapted and directed by Gerrold as a two-part episode of the New Voyages fan series.

Thing is, these little examples just show how non-committally Star Trek has pussyfooted around sexuality issues. I can understand that they probably didn't want to be seen as adding potentially controversial political and sexual undertones to a mostly politically neutral family tv show. But the truly Trekkian approach would just have been to throw in the occasional same sex couple and have them accepted without comment, and it's disappointing that they're still so reluctant to take a stand on it.

As for Roddenberry, sounds like he went through a change of heart on the whole gay thing, but popped his clogs before anything could make it into the show:
