In which I thank the 1970s from rescuing me from the 2000s.

Dirty Harry is such a great character. He's portrayed a little sexist in the third film which I thought was weird, but I love the 80s films, where he becomes almost a super-hero.

You might also want to consider that he's fathered 7 children with 5 different women. Not exactly a shining character trait. Meaning, that behind the machismo there's a shitload of self-centeredness, and 'move on to the next woman when you get sick of the present one' attitude.

Love his films, though.

I immediately filed it away as a barometer test. I shut off the dating profile. "No way Callahan would be on a site like this!"
This article is the first ten minutes of a decent indie romantic comedy.

Hence the "he ain't perfect" line. I'm pretty aware of his biography. But thanks for the lecture. I really never get tired of guys wagging their fingers at me for some reason or other.

Ooo, I like the spicy! Seriously though I am really enjoying the "thankfuls" that give us a glimpse into your lives. I especially like the family ones.

I dated a girl awhile back that had a similar barometer, but her favorite guy was John Wayne. That's what this segment reminded me of.

Part of the reason I wrote it was a healthy curiosity if any guys or girls had done the same thing. I was just talking to a friend of mine last night, and he mentioned his girl equivalent, so I thought it must be A Thing Nerds Do.

John Wayne is a pretty great barometer. I would never have thought so until Katharine Hepburn basically described him as perfect ... and she was as liberal and independent as they come, so that raised him a lot in my romantic esteem.

When I was younger (16 to 19) I used Daria and Annie Hall, respectively, but most of my taste in women has been refined by my previous relationships, as opposed to fictional characters. "I liked this about this relationship, I liked that about that one" etc.

Which is quite mature. Mine have all failed to launch so I couldn't take anything positive out of them.

I actually had the story of "the dude who forgot to tell me he was married" in that article, and I took it out. What a wonderful convergence of events it all was.

Great piece. Spread it out to the women in my life. Really great writing today.

I loved this article, that is all.

Dirty Harry? Mine was Marion Ravenwood.

It's been really interesting to see you get the staff getting so personal with these "What I'm Thankful For" columns.

I want to bring on some reader Thankfuls -- there's nothing left to expose of me.

I'm sort of intrigued by the comments. It's funny how the forum gets it, and the commenters are just working to outdo themselves to imply that it's sick and strange. That proves they have healthy self-esteem all the way, lol.

They wag their fingers because something about Clint Eastwood being an ass kicking alpha male offends their delicate soul patch/girlpants-wearing sensibilities. Or because most of them are talkbackers and probably don't have souls. Either way, I'd like to point out that not only am I straight up awesome for various reasons, I also like to lift heavy things sometimes, and own a revolver. Just sayin'.

But for srs, I like these articles. My personal barometer would be Indiana Jones, but I'm straight so I'm kind of SOL there.

Waiting for Clint, starring Felicia Day. With cameo by Nathan Fillion playing against type as one of the hapless suitors. Eventually she winds up with hyper-macho Neil Pat....Shit, no, not a Dr. Horrible reunion. Back to the casting board.

Though I can easily see "Elisabeth" played by Felicia singing wistfully to various Clint DVDs in a Best Buy. Get Whedon on it.

1) For a brief period during middle school, my romantic(?) ideal was Lt. Calahan from Police Academy. So I get it. I get it indeed.

2) I think it's outstanding that Dirty Harry is your Manic Pixie Dreamgirl. I can't help but imagine him working in a record store with purple hair and legwarmers.

Dirty Harry Is Your Manic Pixie Dreamgirl is my new band name.

Great read, great honesty. Elisabeth, probably goes without saying but please ignore the douchier comments.

I don't think I've ever read a review of yours, but from this one and that Lalo Schifrin bit a few weeks ago, I get the feeling you could write about certain "guy" movies better than most guys. Which is quite awesome.

Elisabeth, Kim Morgan, and Hannah Neurotica giving some sexist fanboy a Death Proof beatdown, then smoking a bowl and hitting up a Warren Oates triple feature at the Alamo.

Just had to say this was a genuinely wonderful article, and one of the best I've read on CHUD in weeks. It kind of made my day. I too suffered a mass extinction event in my friendsphere when my compatriots all graduated and left the area this past spring. Navigating through life without a circle of friends can leave you feeling rudderless and adrift. Recently I've kind of been reconsidering the whole Online Dating thing, which is something I vowed to never again take part in. Yet even as I circle the drain of the interpersonal relationship cesspool, your article helps to give me the hope and confidence to hold out and wait for an Eastwood. It's very much appreciated, glad to have you here on CHUD

It's always fascinating reading articles like this, because it presents relationships and dating in a way which feels truer than a thousand rom-coms or rule books. The actual article is kind of startling, not because the opinion stated is somehow wrong, but because we usually lie to ourselves about the parameters we set up for potential partners. It's a brave thing to essentially say, 'no, these people aren't good enough for me' and live for an ideal.

Thanks, guys! If anyone got a fraction of amusement or thought out of it, I have done my duty. Honestly, the comments just made me laugh and I like to get in there and scrap once and awhile because I know most of them are too chicken to come in here.

I'm down for this to be a musical, but I'm playing myself, dammit! Someone can just dub my singing voice in the grand tradition of Audrey Hepburn. And the Warren Oates double feature will be the wrap party. I prefer booze to drugs, though.

Nice one Elisabeth. My own barometer of ladyhood is Glenn Close. If a girl can't love me with as much heartfelt dedication as Alex Forrest then I don't need her in my life.
