The inaugural edition of Renn's signature column celebrates a video store that's stuck it out.

Great article, Renn! Really wish there was a first rate joint like that down here. Especially since the 2 Mom And Pop shops that I would frequent, kicked the bucket around the same time last month.

Now it's just Netflix for me. Unless a specialty shop opens up.

Renn, I can't read that tonight, but I will soon. Promise.

Gonna have to check this place out Thursday. Sounds like a top spot.

I've been reading this site for years (around 7, I think), & that is, without a doubt, one of my favorite pieces that I've ever read here. I love Videodrome, & seeing it getting the spotlight on CHUD just made my day. My first trip there I rented 13 TZAMETI (which I learned about through CHUD) & the original THE VANISHING (didn't have Netflix yet, & I wasn't even sure that Videodrome would have it because it's apparently notoriously hard to find on DVD). I don't make it over to that side of town as much as I would like, but I will miss this place dearly when I move away in a few months.

Interesting, thoughtful piece. I really enjoyed reading it.

ETA: just linked it on my FB news feed.

Yeah, fantastic article Renn. One of the better I've read for a while. We have a store here that is kind of similar; less depth as far as release dates go but great foreign selections, but now that I realize it doesn't share an 'Asian Sex and Splatter' catagory I'll find it forever lacking..

Great article, Renn. I too live for a good video store, and the experience of finding a film there.

For LA area chewers, there's is a store that seems remarkably similar to Videodrome, called Videotheque, in South Pasadena, just down the street from the Gold Line station on Mission Street. They're a bit smaller than the store Renn describes here, but they have a similar organizational system (organized by country and director, and then sections for specific genres, including the trashiest movies you can think of), and they've even been getting in the Warner Archives releases. Definitely worth checking out.

I think my favorite thing about this place is that it's the Organized-By-Director area that has its own private room, & the Sex-Splatter area is set up against a bunch of outside windows.

Truly a great article. Describes a lot of how I felt as a kid at video stores.

I remember the "Pirahna" and "Humanoids From The Deep" VHS covers scarring the shit out of me (I had and still have a bad JAWS phobia back then).

awesome. will give full attention when i get home

though one thing I wanted to point out

The title. Everytime i quick scan all i see is The New FleshLight.....which isn't necessarily a bad thing

Thanks for the response guys, spent a lot of time on this one and hope to do more like it. Any help getting it out there is definitely appreciated, since it's a big investment of time to justify.

I'd love feedback on the photography as well, since that's going to be a big part of the column.

That was great, Renn. Keep 'em coming.

Folks, we really need the word spread on things like this. We are busting ass and are treading water a little on the traffic front. Any help is loved.

Yeah this is a great GREAT piece on what seems like a heavenly place. Should life ever conspire to have my owning/operating one of these establishments, this will certainly be a good business model to follow.

I need to create a Digg account. I did post it on my facebook page. Tried posting it to my Twitter, but for some reason it wouldn't let me. I'll try it again later.

It certainly has a great structure. Films by the director and in order from first to last/most recent. I like that. Never seen that done before.

One thing I've always loved about Videodrome is their...let's say cavalier attitude towards the legality of some of the films they stock. I mean, sometimes you've just got to see a bootleg of Cocksucker Blues or Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story, you know?

That last picture on Page 1, of a Betamax release from Vestron Video, speaks to me more than you can perhaps know.
