I'm totally going to this.

So what happens if Drafthouse makes (or has made) a film Devin thinks is crap? Isn't it kinda his job to promote these things, and thus bullshit us if he thinks they've produced a real stinker?
If Drafthouse were a major studio, or even a decent sized indie studio, that might be a conflict of interests. But I can't imagine the output of Drafthouse Films being frequent enough to affect his credibility in any way. And by all accounts, Four Lions is not only not a stinker, but a great movie.

Man, people need to chill the fuck out. Brother's gotta get paid. Good on him.

He didn't sell out. He bought in.

It's too bad I have class tonight, or I'd be all over that ArcLight screening.

I don't see how the frequency is relevant. Sure, he's gonna be pimping these things sparsely, but he IS a publicist for them more or less, no? Isn't that part of his job description? I don't much care (he sold out already when he appeared on AICN), it's just kind of a weird arrangement for a supposed film journalist.

Movin' on up.

I think it's a question worth discussing once we actually get to that bridge. At the moment, there's really nothing solid to go on about.

I'd like to think that he'll do both jobs as best as he can. Publicist-hat: Pimp the movie. Film journalist: Be honest about the movie. It's not going to be easy, but it's not like it's some situation that's never happened to anyone else before.

I don't think there is or will be anything awkward about Devin working in conjunction with a distribution/production company. This is the changing face of the industry, to some extent.

Frankly, as someone who works in said industry, I wish every production company was run by people like Devin and the Drafthouse team. Most creative execs have a disturbingly poor knowledge of films and film history.

I'll be at the Brattle next week. Cool.

At some level, I'd think it's the train of thought that you need guys with "business skills" more than guys that know the industry/product. I'd like to combine the knowledge of film and film history with the latter, but good luck with that. I've heard some pretty stupid pitches for entertainment related business ideas from business students. Ha.

After having Chris Morris as our best kept comedy secret for the last couple of decades it's kind of surreal seeing him getting mixed up in the US film blogger world.

What's really weird is that three The Day Today alumni have Oscar nominations (including Peter O'Hanrahahanrahan) and Morris isn't one of them.

As for this tour, I have known a few people who wouldn't be at all impressed if you told them you met Spielberg or Scorsese or whoever, but would give their right nut for that kind of access to Morris. Have to wonder if he will be secretly using this publicity tour for comedy research or some other hilariously nefarious purpose. After all, it's Morris!

Thing is Morris kind of retired his old reclusive dark prankster image for the Four Lions publicity rounds, seemed like he was cheerfully doing straightforward interviews and appearances all the time. And you never know, if the film does okay maybe it'll quietly get a look in the original screenplay slot like In The Loop.

Incidentally am I the only one who'd love to see Morris follow this one up with a feature length movie in the style of Jam? I want a full on Lynchian nightmare comedy mindfuck.

I didn't know that. It's hard to picture domesticated Morris.

That would be great.
