Wii Woes

So, anyone that is still using their Wii, have you had any issues recently? I had to send my Wii back when Super Smash Bros. Brawl came out, and now my Wii is not plaing like 1/2 of my games. I guess it's a first-gen, as I got it about 4-6 months after it came out. But between having already sent it in once, and having to send in my PS3 (and pay for it) to be fixed, I'm getting sick of this shit.

I still have a Sega Genesis that I bought in 1995-1996 that still works. My niece brought an original NES with her when she moved in and that still works. Why do none of these new systems work for longer than like 18 months at a time?

I went to their website, and I have to enter my serial number and they'll "tell" me how much fixing the system will cost. Good thing? It can't be more than $150, because otherwise, I'll just buy a new one. But this is really ridiculous.

I haven't had any issues with my launch Wii, but then it mostly gets fired up for one Greatest Mario Game Ever Made a year, although I've been using it for Netflix Instant lately.

Nintendo's customer service is supposed to be superlative. I don't know what their official policy on repairs is, but I'd be surprised (and disappointed) if they charged you an arm and a leg.

I bought mine a month after launch on Black Friday. I sent it in for a drive repair about 2 years later I would say. That cost me $80. I haven't used it as much in the past two years except since the Netflix disc came out I have used it daily for watching movies and TV shows. Only rarely has a game been played. I haven't had any issues with it since the drive repair.

If it is giving you issues on some discs I would say those discs versus the machine, yeah? If the drive then probably around $80.

My launch day Wii system still works fine, but it doesn't get played as often as it did when I first got it. Hopefully it still works when I get around to playing Kirby's Epic Yarn and Epic Mickey.

We have issues with a few disks, but considering how much time my kids play it, we have gotten our moneys worth.

Also, it is so loud it sound like two helicopters fucking.

Just went through similar frustrations, my 360 harddrive randomly bricked last week, with a lot of game progress that I wish I hadn't lost. Had it for maybe 8 months? My computer has been chugging along for over 6 years now and is fine, and likewise the NES and SNES at my parents still works just fine whenever I visit. It kills me that whenever I bring up stuff like this for new consoles, the answer is always "oh yeah, that's normal."

I still use mine a fair amount, especially for Netflix, but I did run into an issue where I couldn't play Metroid Prime. Apparently, the Wii had a problem with the dual-layered disc, and I had to set the Wii on its side to play it. (This problem also happens with Super Smash Bros.) I bought a disc cleaner, but it wasn't until I set the Wii on its side that the problem was fixed.

Other than the NES and it's worn out cartridge connections, I've never had a problem with a Nintendo console. *knocks on wood*

I got a Wii on launch day waaaaaay back.

I played it on and off throughout the years but earlier this year me and some friends got pretty addicted to Mario Kart for the gamecube and the new one on the Wii and played it A LOT.

I think it was too much for the Wii and it's now dead. Not really sure what's wrong with it, it won't turn on at all anymore. Poor thing.

I'm going to go through the list of discs tonight and see what exactly does and doesn't work. I think we have like 10-12 Wii games, and if half those don't work anymore, I don't believe that's acceptable. And I do keep the Wii on it's side. Not because of playing certain games, but because of where I keep it. With the recent issues, I actually considered turning it flat.

That's actually what I meant, with the game slot parallel to your DVD player. That solved my issues, at least in regards to dual-layer discs.

This is a known problem with first-gen Wiis, including the one I have. About six months ago, an inordinate amount of loud buzzing began emitting from the disc drive. It's annoying as hell, but as I don't play the thing much, I've just done my best to ignore it or drown it out with the game audio.

Although, I've actually considered sending it to Nintendo to get it fixed before the next Zelda comes out. Is $80 their standard repair fee? How easy is it to send one in and get it back?

It's amazing how robust those old systems are. My SNES, Genesis, original Gameboy, card based PC Engine, etc all of them still work perfectly as long as the connections are clean. Consoles were just BETTER when they didn't have all these moving parts.

2D platformers/shoot-em-ups 4ever!

I got Wii on launch day too, but I haven't played it for months so I don't really know what games it can play or not. If I have any spare time, I'd rather play my 360 than Wii, but I just don't have much time at all after work now.

Finally got around to checking my machine on the Nintendo repair site, and apparently they still have trouble with SSBB, and one of the newer Metroid games (which is another one that won't work), so they're fixing it for free (again).

Well fuck me. I just put a disc in and it won't register on the Disc channel nor will it eject. $90 coming my way to fix it again. I don't feel like dropping another hundred every two years to keep this thing working.

Anyone got a Wii that is collecting dust? I'll give you $50 for it.

The biggest problem fixing it gives me is 2-3 weeks without Netflix and since I don't have cable.... shit.

Did you check their website for the issue to see if they'd fix it for free? That's what I did. I had already gotten it fixed when SSBB first came out, but then when it stopped this time from playing Metroid and SSBB (again), I just sent it back and said SSBB wasn't working, and they took it and fixed it for free.

Although I still haven't hooked it back up since we've been back from Orlando, so I should say "hopefully" it's working now.

The internets aren't hooked to the living room TV. As I said, no cable, so the Netflix is the main source of television viewing for my boys.

Called. It's a drive issue and I had a small convo with the guy about doing this every two years. I'll give them another holler this week and try to get my squeaky wheel on.

Oh well does your TV have any HDMI or s-video inputs? Could hook a computer into it.

Have an iPhone/iPad? You can video out Netflix on it. Speaking of which, I think I'm gonna do that right now.
