Maybe briefly, yeah. I can see a scene where Bane raids the cave under Wayne Manor, but doesn't find anything but old remnants of Batman -- including the old, unused mask molds. Dude's been out of commission for years, so Bane's certainly not going to walk in and find a full-functioning Batcave (which was never even built, as Wayne functioned out of his base of operations within the city).

It's a striking image, Bane holding a cracked mask. But it doesn't look like the actual cowl from the bat suit at all.

Except for the fact that the image of Bane carrying a broken cowl matches, exactly, the setting in which Batman is seen fighting Bane.

But whatever. You clearly want this to go a certain way, rather than what's plainly evident in the trailers, promotional shots, and spy footage.

That's because it probably broke off. Look, there's common sense... and then there's COMMON SENSE. And the trailers have told you, in fact they've beaten you over the head, with the fact that Batman is defeated. The water rushing down behind him is in the scene where Batman and Bane fight in the sewers. This is not the cave. This is the moment Batman is taken down. He's holding a broken cowl with a kid saying in the background, "You think he's coming back?" Cut to Bruce Wayne in a being carried off. I mean, why would you make any other assumption?

nevermind the cowls he ordered are just the masks.  He has to assemble them in order to make the bat cowl.  So, I guess Bruce has a container of half finished cowls that Bane decides to break?  I say that, because the cowl Bane has, has the ears on it.

Nevermind the setting, and the fact we see Batman take a down angled punch to the face in the trailer.

Furthermore, what would be the point of Bane digging in and going through half-finished bat cowls. To tease the audience that it should have gone the other way?

Great way to show how violent and powerful your new villian is.  Have him find a box of cowls and break one.

So much better then having him break it off of Batman's face during a fight.

I mean, COME ON.  We see Bane in a trailer BREAK A WALL with one punch.  It's so obvious that he fights Batman, Selina blocks Batmans escape, and Bane breaks Batman and takes him as a prisoner so he can be alive when Gotham is destroyed.

It's a striking image. But I'm going to go with the worst theory about it. lol

You're either trolling (and I'm playing right into your hands) or....I don't know. Easily confused by marketing material?  Take a look at these official images - all released by WB. I've upped the brightness on a couple, but that's all I've done.

From the MTV clip: Bane opening his arms in a wet, underground setting saying, "Let the games begin!"

banevsbat1.jpg

A promotional shot published by Empire magazine, clearly showing the same scene from a different angle. Bane is facing Batman in a wet, underground environment, most likely Gotham's sewers. Note that thet Batsuit (including the cowl) is wet.

banevsbat2.jpg

Still from the Nokia trailer, showing Bane and Batman throwing down....in a wet, dark environment. Not unlike the one seen above! Again, the Batsuit is visibly wet in the trailer, with water droplets all over it.

banevsbat3.jpg

Bane dropping the broken cowl that is...holy shit! It has water all over it! How did that happen? This has been featured in at least two of the trailers.

banevsbat4.jpg

The shot that immediately follows this in the trailers....we see Bane's hand twitching (presumably contemptuously dropping the broken cowl)...and again, it's the same wet, dark, underground environment.

banevsbat5.jpg

There's also the second official poster showing Bane walking away from a broken cowl that is...holy shit! It's also covered in water droplets.

I really don't understand how you think the broken cowl comes from some lost store of extra batsuits, but I also don't understand people thinking Harvey Dent is still alive.

I got it: Bane finds the box of leftover cowls, hangs onto one and then breaks it over Batman's face and walks off with it only to throw it away.

Actually, it's that Batman is entirely composed of cowls, stitched together by Alfred.

I would LOL so hard if he's right.

Or, we could just wait a month and watch the movie.

I wasn't trolling, but your post was concise, and you've convinced me that I was way off. I hadn't seen all those angles of Bane against that waterfall in succession, and it's obvious to me that all those shots take place in the sewers, or wherever.

I appreciate you taking the time to put all that together.

This is how the scene plays out in my mind.

tdkr.jpg

This is of course right before Bane claps his hands closed smashing the mask like a balloon...metaphorically destroying Batman...get it?

But that's not how the Internet works! You're supposed to take an entrenched position regardless of evidence and fire back!

More seriously, that's cool of you to be gentlemanly about it, and I'm sorry for any sharpness on my part.

Now - let's go back to discussing whether JGL is really Robin or not.

There's actually an article on Forbes about that very thing...with "evidence". Ridiculous hit-whoring.

Holy shit. There is.

To be clear, my sentence about that was meant entirely tongue in cheek.

He's the Joker. Duh.

Am I weird for finding that Forbes article incredibly frustrating and bizarrely smug?

Well that latest trailer was pretty much incredible (awkwardly tacked on humor there at the end not withstanding). I'm fully sold on this movie and more than a little excited. Unfortunately, I've also come to the realization that I probably am not going to catch this movie opening weekend. The crowds are going to be crazy, and I think I've already waited too long to get tickets to a showtime at anything close to a decent hour. I'll probably go later that week to a matinee. I feel badly about not contributing to the opening weekend record, but there is a point where the hype is too much and it begins to push me away as much as it draws me in. Already there seems to be far more buzz than Avengers had at this stage in it's hype cycle.

Oh, and as for that latest trailer, I wonder if Joseph Gordon-Levitt asking whether the boy "knows about him" was in fact a reference to Bane taken out of context and repurposed to be a line about Batman. That kind of stuff happens in trailers all the time. They could have taken that line and attached it to the question about whether he thinks Batman will come back.

JGL is Azrael obviously!

I have no doubt, John Blake is, ............................................ John Blake Gotham City beat cop.  Gordon goes down, and John Blake takes his spot as Batman's new police informent.  Gordon either dies, or is hurt enough to take a permanent desk job at the end of the film, and Blake takes Gordon's previous active role.  Maybe even a promotion, LT John Blake.

Super Hero Hype never lets me down!

Wait a minute....John Blake is one letter from John Blaze...Could he be Ghostrider?! Is it possible WB, Marvel, Disney, Paramount, Sony and Fox have come together to give us a Marvel vs DC crossover?!

Add a couple of wheels to the upside down chalk bat and we have...

I think we can confirm this here and now based on the evidence given.

Obviously that chalk symbol is the profile shot of two winged heros coming together!!!!

Batman and Nightwing!!!   It is forsure now.

What if JGL is a Robin made from leftover Batman masks? What if Batman and Bane face off at a water park with tons of robins watching?

JGL is Jason Todd Robin from Earth 2 where Batman let him die. Now he's out for revenge against this Batman.

Also:

Your assertion about the Batcave never being (re)built is wrong. Not only did we get a glimpse of it in the MTV footage, Bruce and Alfred basically come out and say it's being redone at the end of BEGINS.

We don't see it in TDK because Batman is using the construction site as a temporary base while Wayne Manor is being rebuilt.

ETA: Here's the dialoge from the end of BEGINS:

Rachel Dawes: [looking at the ruins of the burned down Wayne Manor] What will you do?
Bruce Wayne: Rebuild it. Just the way it was, brick for brick.
Alfred Pennyworth: *Just* the way it was, sir?
Bruce Wayne: Yeah. Why?
Alfred Pennyworth: I thought this might be a good opportunity for improving the foundations.
Bruce Wayne: In the south-east corner?
Alfred Pennyworth: Precisely, sir.

It's actually gonna be a pretty epic fight. They'll be fighting in the Batcave, through a kitchen (with Bane hitting his head on all the hanging pots and pans), through the bathroom (while some hot girl is showering), through the living room (it will all be one continuous shot), finally ending with Batman knocking Bane into a bunch of crates with the words "Assorted cowls and throwing knives" written on them. As Bane tries to get up, we'll see he has, like, a bunch of knives sticking to his arms and chest, and a Batcowl stuck on his head. "Who turned out the lights!?!", Bane will cry, before throwing away the mask and resuming the fight.

It's gonna be great!

You joke, but I would die happy if Batman and Bane shared a They Live/Family Guy Chicken Fight action set piece that just refuses to end.

Maybe that's what the spare cowl is for.  Bane is demanding that Batman "put this cowl on, or start eating that trash can."

If you want to reference a cartoon fight, why not the ending one in Episode III?

Episode what now?

I think it's funny that everyone is making the assumption that John Blake is Robin/Nightwing/Azreal. Don't see this at all I feel he is the replacement for Gordon after he takes him out and leads the police in his stead which makes him rather important, honestly way cooler than just being this movies Dick Grayson.

Miranda Tate on the other hand has to secretly be Talia Al-Ghul. Why cast Marion Coitallard as just the "girl" that makes no sense, especially since in the comics Talia and Bane are connected. I just hope they do the reveal in a awesome way, like have Miranda double cross Wayne which leads him to be imprisoned and tortured by Bane. Something cool like that.

I'm not sure who "everyone" is, but I don't think anyone here is seriously arguing that Blake = Robin. I've seen one or two folks over at Nolanfans.com, but they're in no way representative of the whole.

As far as Marion's role...

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Joey King, the young actress hired for TDKR, let it slip that she plays young Talia - so it's more or less a lock that Marion is Talia all growed up.

WHY DID WE BRING UP THE FUCKING PREQUELS?!

I actually like the idea of Blake turning out to be Batman's replacement, only though if it were set up as a nod toward the end of the film. That way, Nolan would get to walk away while also telling WB "here's a direction you can take with Bale and I's absence" and make it so we don't get an instant reboot. Then again, I have a giant hard-on for anything-JGL, so... yeah.

According to director Christopher Nolan, The Dark Knight Rises “picks up” eight years after The Dark Knight; it is what he called the film's “jumping off point,” and that this was done primarily to give meaning to a “big sacrifice, a big compromise” that occurred at the end of The Dark Knight between Gordon and Batman and that it “takes time to establish that and to show that” meaning. Entertainment Weekly magazine stated that the film will explore the ramifications and repercussions of the ending of The Dark Knight. Actor Gary Oldman stated that Gotham City has been cleaned-up with the “Harvey Dent Act,” but the city is “seething” below the surface. Nolan said that Gotham has “moved on” after The Dark Knight, and the city has gotten “better in a sense.” Gotham is prospering from Batman and Gordon's deception “superficially,” as the cracks have been “papered over,” Nolan said to Entertainment Weekly. Nolan said Gotham has come to revere Harvey Dent in the way Batman intended at the end of The Dark Knight within those eight years. Co-writer Jonathan Nolan stated that Batman's plan to “stamp out crime” had succeeded.

Christopher Nolan said that The Dark Knight Rises is about “finishing Batman and Bruce Wayne's story.” He also said that Bruce is “not in a great state,” and “He's frozen in time. He's hit a brick wall,” and that he “has nowhere to go” after The Dark Knight. Entertainment Weekly stated that Bruce is “still recovering from the physical and psychological traumas of his Joker/Two-Face double whammy,” and that Batman was “still a reviled cultural scapegoat.” It said that Batman “continues to be reviled and MIA as the story begins,” but new threats to the city will “force Batman to end his exile

A few pages ago I stated that I have not done much in the way of research and wondered why everyone was so convinced he was injured (and in need of a cane) pre-Bane confrontation and all I got was speculation and fan-fic. You're the only person that has brought actual evidence to the table, so kudos to you. I'm still not really convinced he's needed a cane for the 8 years since TDK but at least with your post it makes sense why the theory is out there and I'm willing to accept that he's been "retired" since TDK... even though I hate it.
