US States by movie

Ugh, once again it seems that as far as the outside world is concerned, Massachusetts=Boston. The Cape? The Berkshires? Might as well not exist, if you were to ask Tinsel Town. Why not THE CRUCIBLE or THE HUMAN STAIN*? The DEPARTED represents an outsiders vision of THE BAY STATE, IMHO

*Which not only takes place in a fictionalized version of my home town, it was shot there

Jesus Camp twice?

...and Cali's Fast Times At Ridgemont High? Really?
Yeah, I didn't even know Ridgmont High took place in California. That could be anywhere. What about CHINATOWN, SUNSET BOULEVARD, VERTIGO? Shit, even EARTHQUAKE is a better California film.
or Back to the Future.
I just checked to make sure my home state of Illinois was correctly marked The Blues Brothers, and breathed a sigh of relief.

Also, Delaware = Wayne's World? That movie took place in Illinois.
Minnesota gets Fargo...even though Fargo is in North Dakota.

Michigan gets Robocop. Note to the rest of the country - Detroit does NOT equal Michigan. Shit, at least give Roger and Me some props - it gets near the REAL economic collapse of the Big 3.

And why the fuck is Wayne's World - set in suburban Chicago - floating out near Delaware/Washington DC?
Wayne's World reference is funny, but man...the coastal bashing of the Mid-South is ridiculous.

I hate to see what would've came out if they spent more than five minutes planning this piece.

I think that falls under the "I didn't even know (movie x) took place in (that state)." BttF is totally fucking generic. It's like trying to place Slap Shot (which I think is technically in upstate NY) - minor league level rust belt city that loves sports? Hmmm, that narrows it down to about 300 cities.

No shit. Is a little inventiveness too much to ask? Maybe Lilo and Stitch for Hawaii? The Orchid Thief for Florida? Okay, points for Gummo for Ohio.
Terrific movie that has a TON to do with Minnesota - Sweet Land
post #13 of 45
Ah, forget it. I think I've already put more thought into this than the article authors did.

To be fair, most of the film takes place in Brainerd, MN.

Eh in fairness FC really only takes place in DE if you've listened to the commentary track and are familiar with DE's credit industry regulations

EDIT I don't even think the novel references DE if I remember correctly

Yeah, but it does take place in Delaware. Wayne's World most definitely does not.
Wow.. Deliverance for Georgia? Really? Gone with the Wind, Driving Miss Daisy, or Midnight in the Garden of Evil off the top of my head wouldn't have worked better? Hell the river they filmed Deliverance on is all of 20 miles in Georgia from the North Carolina and South Carolina borders.

If you want man on man loving in the South, at least go with the movie that gives you voodoo, candy tucking, and a man killing his boyfriend.

Now for further complaints about the south's treatment here--Evil Dead for Tennessee? When you have films like October Sky, Nashville, Hustle and Flow, Great Balls of Fire, Coal Miner's Daughter, and half of the John Grisham films, they went with Evil Dead?
I think it is pretty neat that we got The Evil Dead. A lot of the other films you mention range from great to amazing but Evil Dead isn't a bad way to be listed at all.
One of the problems with this list is it doesn't pay any attention to regions in large states. Take PA for instance: Groundhog Day is fine for Western PA, but what about Philly? That's Rocky territory. Or Philadelphia for the love of God.

Same thing with California. Fast Times is fine for Southern California, or at least a small subset of SO Cal (but considering the metric ton of movies made about CA, it seems like a lazy choice). But that does not apply to Nor Cal at all, and the central valley even less.
'Fargo' for MN? I love the film but that's more of a parody of MN life than anything else. 'Grumpy Old Men' would have suited the state better.
Well we got First Blood instead of Singles which is great but only about a third of the state even resembles the locales in First Blood.

I'll give the map props for giving Louisiana "Southern Comfort," which really captures the feel the the great gumbo state.

Or at least, that feeling I get every time I'm going down I-10 and it's nothing but a bridge for 25 miles and I just know that there's a posse of inbred homicidal backwoods cajuns just waiting for me to break down so they can slaughter me and use me as a side dish to the 400-lb. pig they just slaughtered for the village picnic.

Y'know, that Louisiana.
They could have also avoided repeating Jesus Camp by giving Missouri "Waiting For Guffman".

We got Pink Flamingos. Welcome to Maryland! EAT SHIT.

Bull Durham is a good choice for NC

Not digging Scarface for all of Florida either. There has to be a beach movie or two that would have been a better fit.

I'd settle for Roadhouse or Grandview USA in a pinch. Or maybe White Palace.
New York should be...King Kong (1933), not a...Lame film like, Taxi Driver. The Worlds Largest, Gorilla, on the (at the time) Tallest Building, for the...Best city in the, World. X-Men, would be a close...Second, with The Ghostbusters...3rd.
Clerks over Garden State? or Toxic Avenger? Would have preferred Being John Malkovich.

I'm biased, because I grew up there, but I would have given Apollo 13 to Florida.
Not being from SC originally I am glad though they went with Glory instead of The Patriot. Fuck that Deliverance shit for GA though.

Police Academy 5, or the remake, Reno 911: Miami come to mind.
LMAO @ Gummo for Ohio. Having been to Ohio many times, and suffered through Gummo once, I'd say that's pretty accurate.

eta: Yeah this list is destined to fail because some states are so damn diverse. Florida =/= Miami, etc
post #37 of 45
I love that some of you guys are getting bent out of shape about this ridiculous map. That being said, Maryland wins this map.
Nashville would probably be the definitive Tennessee movie, but I have no problem with Evil Dead. I've vacationed many times in cabins similar to Ash.
Friday Night Lights would be better for Texas. NCFOM is a fine film but it doesn't say Texas to me at all.
Man, Ohio really IS fucked up. (I've lived here my whole life, so I can unfortunately attest to that.) I hate Gummo, but man, they hit the nail on the head.

And why do so many fucked up people in movies come from Ohio, anyway? Don't ask me for examples, because I'm having a dumb phase right now, but goddamn. There was a time when my hsuband and I decided we'd only rent movies that took place in Ohio to see how fucked up we look to the rest of the world, and we stopped after like a week. And why do a lot of fucked-up movies take place in Ohio? I'd like to think there are SOME (a few?) civilised people here, but when it comes down to it, it just always seems to make sense that Ohio IS the shallow end of the American gene pool.

North Dakota could have been Badlands but it's pretty obvious the creator of this isn't that knowledgeable about films that don't play on cable.

Has this one been posted yet?
