Anybody tempted?

Hellz yeah.

I recently put off the purchase of a new living room set to begin charting the new sets and watch the bugs get worked out. I'll be scouting prices and will hopefully take the plunge shortly after the new year.

I haven't looked into the boxes yet. I assume the Sony Blu-ray box will integrate into my home theatre much like any blu-ray player will.

Google TV. Making television unfamily friendly since 2010.

Seriously only people who have no friends or family and live alone could justify this purchase.

With all the idiotic screen trades from tv to computer to youtube to whatever.. you WILL PISS your family members off.

My tivo just died, so I was considering going with a cable box + google tv solution, but...uh...it looks TERRIBLE. You can get Amazon Video on Demand on a Roku, but not on google TV unless you go through the browser? Insane. In a year or so, I bet this will be a great product.

I haven't really seen how these are that much different than having a fairly basic computer hooked up to your TV. We found a low budget computer a few years ago and have been using it with the TV.

Well surely the picture would be better? When my laptop is connected to my TV the results are watchable but hardly ideal. And most people don't have a dedicated PC / laptop for that purpose.

Here's some more info for those who are interested:

My impression based on video demos and reviews is that this is TV's future, but that it's not quite there yet.

I'll probably get version 2.0 if/when it's integrated with a new Tivo box/Cable company DVR and/or game console and/or when my TV gets replaced or upgraded, but I'm in no hurry.

I'll go with a TV OS that isn't made by a company that gets all of its revenue from advertising.

Well, when I say "this" is TV's future, I don't necessarily mean Google TV specifically, but that the central ideas behind the interface, the global search of your local content combined with internet content, etc are all good ones and seem like a natural fit.

The way the iPhone changed mobile phone interfaces, I can see the ideas in GoogleTV changing and heavily influencing TV/DVR/Set Top Box/Game console interfaces in the future (For a variety of reasons, I think it'll take much longer here though, maybe 5-10 years out).

Yeah, this is the Microsoft Home Media Center actually come to fruition with added benefits. And to keep the cost down it is going to be ad driven.
