Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii)

Anyone looking forward to this? I have fond memories of blasting through the original trilogy over 3 consecutive Christmases back in the mid nineties when the originals were released, and even though Rare isn't involved in this new 4th installment... I'm psyched.

Early word is Retro did not skimp on the difficulty, so that's pretty cool. I wasn't a huge fan of the SNES games but this is looking really pretty and polished. I've already pre-ordered Epic Mickey though, so this will probably have to wait a bit. (Even though I have a sneaking suspicion Epic Mickey isn't turning out so hot.)

I'm thinking this is a must-own for Wii owners. Too bad they're few and far between.

I still haven't gotten Galaxy 2, and THAT's a must-own. This is a "own when the price goes down, which will never happen because it's a Nintendo game".
I love Donkey Kong Country, especially the first one, but I really think this is a waste of Retro Studios. I was really hoping they were working on something all-new/original.

Sorry for all the negativity, I really do hope it's great. Looks pretty nice.

Also jazzed myself. I love the first three. I own them on the GBA, and have played them through a few times. I always found 3 to be the best game and most difficult. The childish elements were deceiving.

I actually bought Super Mario Bros. Wii and Galaxy 2 at Kmart on release week (for Galaxy 2) for 50 bucks. I don't remember how the deal worked out, but if you keep a lookout, you can find Nintendo titles insanely cheap.

Is Kirby a Nintendo title? If so, maybe I can find a sale like this and get Epic Yarn with DK.

It seems I've said that about nearly every Wii game this year - Metroid: Other M, NBA Jam, this . . . the only game I've been willing to pay full price for this year has been SMG2 (which, admittedly, is awesome).

I've seen a couple similar first-week deals, but after that they never drop in price, other than the rare third-tier title like Excitebots or Battalion Wars 2.

I could have sworn NBA Jam was going to be a WiiWare title originally. Then later I see that it's a full-priced release. Weird.

If they got rid of Country, and called it Donkey Kong Returns, I'd be excited. Though I'd assume it's about an older Donkey Kong protecting the jungle from Neo-Nazi skinheads, while he meets Dixie Kong and makes her dress up as Diddy Kong to be his sidekick and then the government sends Mario to stop him, and he beats Mario up.

This game is an absolute blast.

My girl owns a Wii, and she's been excited to run out and get this. We went out first thing yesterday, grabbed the game, a pizza and some beer and had a killer time playing it all yesterday afternoon.

The cooperative multiplayer is fluid, intuitive, and has none of the frustrations and struggles I felt with New Super Mario Bros. Wii's co-op. It's also beatiful, to boot. Absolutely a must own for Wii owners.

This game is the goods. Some of the best 2d platforming in years. The wild 3d elements coming in and out, along with the stunning backgrounds and environments makes for a consistently involving and surprising experience. Once you get to some of the tricky levels in world 4 and 5, you will be cursing the developers will simultaneously praising them for their diabolical genius. This game is absolutely not a waste of Retros talents. Their gifts for level designs, interesting challenges, and cohesive game worlds are all on display here. I see myself playing through this multiple times in the near future, and I'll do my damdest to get those hidden levels. It's worth the 50$ at least ad much as any other modern game. Don't ghettoize it just because it's 2d. In fact, I'd already put it a notch or two above NSMBWii and the original DKCs.

I really need to get a Wii one of these days.

Loved the original, and still bust it out every once in a while

After spending a week or so with this one, I can safely say it lived up to my expectations - Just a ton of fun, and surprisingly difficult.

Favorite level so far? Probably the slanty pirate ship level, or the level where DK and Diddy have to hide behind rock formations from tidal waves surging into the foreground.

If Retro busts out a trilogy if these on the Wii, I'd welcome more DKC adventures with open arms.
