Fascinating article. More like this, please!

The idea of "open source filmmaking" is a tricky one. What would the open-source screenplay be like? There have been efforts to find out (probably many more than I'm aware of) but it's a difficult thing to effectively force committee-style innovation on what should ultimately be a piece of personal expression.
How is this different from most current filmmaking? The resources are cheaper, but the creative push-and-pull remains the same. The goals are more idealistic, but I'm not sure the end product will be that much different.

Fair point, but compare the screenwriter who writes his piece usually in isolation, with a constant stream of notes and revisions (that he typically makes himself, however begrudgingly) to the idea of simply uploading a topic or a story or whatever and having people essentially wiki a story into being (not making a value judgment either way). There's certainly an open-sourceish vibe to Hollywood screenwriting (probably viewed negatively by most), and I'm never certain it's the smartest way of making movies, but I'm not even sure a true "open source" screenplay could even philosophically exist, much less logistically work.

Mostly it's the inherent difference in creating a singular piece of work as opposed to a UI or a program that will be used by thousands, millions, or more people in much the same way, for utilitarian purposes.

It almost seems like an explication of what Hollywood has done forever, which is adapt (or, less politely, rip off) frameworks that led to profitable films in the past. I can't decide if this encourages inspiration or more derivative product, although with open source it usually leads to both, and is dependent on the users themselves.

A fascinating topic, Renn. I look forward to seeing where these advances take us, for good or ill.

Aspiring animators everywhere now have a chance at pursuing their craft without having to move to a metropolitan area. That's the pipe dream in my head and I want to see it happen.

It wasn't really clear to me what was 'open source' about the process from the article. Just the software tools?

Pretty great making-of doc for those that enjoyed the short. Very extensive: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IN6w6...&feature=share

No, the textures/model/animation files as well. You can download it and render any scene you want on your home computer. And you can of course tweak anything to your desire, just like open source software.
