The Tim Curry as Anything Appreciation Thread

Because seeing his two guest appearances on Criminal Minds reminded me of how brilliant this guy is. Who else can go from a devious transvestite to Pennywise the Dancing Clown to an evil environmental threat to Nigel Thornberry and then a creepy American murderer?

Even though it's not as good as MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL (though better than MUPPETS IN SPACE), Tim Curry is a worthy equal to Michael Caine in "being able to act against felt."

There's this really awesome alternate universe where someone misspelled the contract and we got Tim Curry as the Grinch instead of Jim Carrey.

Speaking of alternate universes, even though I really love Mark Hamill as the Joker in BTAS, I'm curious to hear the number of episodes that they recorded for the character with Curry as the original voice. I imagine that it would have sounded similar to Pennywise.

You know what film I love him in? Oscar. Sure the movie's got some flaws, but Tim Curry ain't one of them. And the film itself is quite good. It's not great, but it's good.

Fuck, why didn't they do that? That would have been a perfect match.

I can't think of anyone else that would have played DARKNESS like that. That seductive snarl and wicked twinkle in the eye is pure Curry, and it's 90% of the reason why the character works and doesn't come off as simply a great makeup job.

Stop eating m sesame cake, Curry.

STOP-EATING-MY-SESAME-CAKE!

I also enjoy the quiet competence and dignity that he brings to small supporting roles, like Dr. Petrov in 'the Hunt for Red October'.

No Tim Curry thread is complete without a mention of his excellent multi-character turn in the "Death of Some Salesmen" episode of Tales From the Crypt. Available on the Youtubes!

And though Halloween has now passed, I'd be remiss if I didn't post this amazingly goofy musical number from The Worst Witch: Has anybody seen my tambourine?

ETA: Ack! Beaten to it! Good work, Art.

What I love about the Death of Some Salesman particularly is Tim Curry's portrayal of Pa: even though he's practically unrecognizable under all of the make-up (he's recognizable as Ma and the daughter, but the father is trickier), it's so easy to tell that it's him when Pa does that little laugh or snarls ever so slightly.

Even before there was a Grinch movie I was saying Curry needed to be the Grinch.

And I agree on Oscar. For a simple little screwball farce, it works just fine.

I will say, though, that Curry is blown out of the water by Raul Julia in the Gomez Addams head-to-head.

Even though Tim Curry is in it, I cannot bring myself to enjoy that Worst Witch video. Those lyrics are just terrible and the cheese becomes too insufferable at times. Although Curry emerges unscathed because he's able to keep a mostly straight face and sing extraordinarily well.

Andrew:

Wasn't Curry supposedly pissed that the director expected him to impersonate Raul's portrayal of Gomez? If he did more of his own thing with it, I think he would have been a lot better. Not really his fault, though.

I still 100% believe his performance is the reason my entire generation has a fear of clowns. That just never felt like it was a widespread, expected fear until that miniseries.

Clue is still my favorite performance, though. Film's full of great moments anyway, but once he announces he knows who did it, and walks everyone through the movie, he steals the movie away from everyone.

Except Madeline Kahn. The "I hated her....SO....MUCH" babble is one of those moments that could've worked if it kept going another five minutes.

If the Teabaggers made their entire argument a video clip of Tim Curry's "SOCIALISTS!" line from Clue, they would have my support.
I was going to mention him in Criminal Minds but lo and behold it is in the first post. He did really good work there though his American accents have always sucked.

The American accent wasn't that bad, mostly because it was overshadowed by the great acting. Certainly, it was a lot more successful than many other actors are capable of, and it was a particularly tough accent to nail.

For us slightly older folks, POLTERGEIST owns that distinction.

Curry is pretty great in everything. Try to imagine how insufferable Rocky Horror would be without him.

This is the earliest I remember seeing Tim Curry in anything, and so naturally, everything since has made me recall how awesome he was in HOME ALONE 2.

"Madame, there are dangerous thugs out there, armed to the teeth *SLAP*...do bundle up, it's quite cold outside."

Seeing Rocky Horror when I was 14 was a real eye opener, though. Trying to retro-fit my already established notion to who Tim Curry was went through a ringer that day.

He's one of those character actors that has risen to be a (semi) household name, yet still fills all the normal little character actor roles. While I don't recall seeing him in anything since KINSEY, he never seems to be hurting for work.

Praising with faint damns.

I loved Curry in LEGEND, but am not a fan otherwise. His performance in Disney's THREE MUSKETEERS - which is an awful, awful film by any standard - was not help by his Scooby Doo villain theatrics. Ugh.

Adore Curry and always will. My introduction to him as a lad was his quite phenomenal performance in Clue - which I must've watched a hundred times - along with his small role in Annie with my later discovery of his Frankenfurter (it's pretty rare that an actor gets to define a role for all time - Currys legacy is assured for this if nothing more) will make him always beloved in my eyes.

Motherfucking Pennywise.

Don't forget all his voicework! If you're a villian, you're most likely voiced by Tim Curry. See: Jafar

That bit when he's inside the photo book, the picture comes to life, and he climbs a lamp post to tell the kids he'll kill them all and he's the eater of worlds and children. THAT shit kept me up at nights.

If you're talking about the Disney villain, that character was voiced by Jonathan Freeman. But they do sound really similar.
He was also great in Wiseguy, though you will never see that arc because of music rights issues. Ironic, as it was about a record exec screwing artists out of royalties and selling illegal bootlegs overseas. He ends up in jail singing "Soul Man" with his cellmate to keep from getting raped.
Oh, you kids. You get this far down an appreciation thread without "I Do The Rock"?

My brother worked as an artist on the Jumanji cartoon back in 1996. Curry was the voice of Trader Slick, and my brother and his partner would take the dialogue tracks of Curry and mix them into songs. They were quite hilarious.

Curry has done a huge amount of voice-over work.

Curry's most recent voice work project was BioWare's Dragon Age: Origins. He provided the voice of Arl Howe.

See! Draco proves my point!....But fuck me. I always thought Jafar was Curry. He just....it was just.

Fuck me.

Also: Gabriel Knight in GK1 and 3, and so many other characters in various animated tv shows.
(I've lived with the idea that Curry was Jafar for over a decade, damnit. Why?!)

It's a testament to Curry's talent that Nigel Thornberry and Pennywise are performances from the same man.

I'm pretty sure The Wild Thornberries was Curry's longest-running project for voice work. If he had been the Joker on BTAS, that most likely would've either been first or second. Any other classic 90s animated shows that he was a part of?

I think that's completely true, and reading it makes me wonder why I never arrived at that conclusion before. It's interesting because in the book, Pennywise the Dancing Clown was supposed to be the NON-SCARY form of It, the form It takes to lure children and such. I think there's a line in the book saying something like "because what child doesn't love a clown?" That always kinda made me wonder what kids from earlier generations thought of clowns. If kids from the 50's had no issue with clowns, then I think we can single-handedly blame Tim Curry for making clowns scary as hell for the Millennials.

This x100.

Curry is really good for the first 2/3rds of Clue. After which, he is sensational.
