David Thomson's New Biographical Dictionary of Film (2010 Edition)

Yes, it's out, and yes, it's awesome. I haven't had a chance to really read through a lot of the new entries, but he destroys LIFE AQUATIC and DARJEELING LIMITED, has effusive praise for THERE WILL BE BLOOD, and calls Noah Baumbach a more interesting filmmaker than Wes Anderson (because that's true). He's got some faint praise for Judd Apatow (though he considers Funny People his best work), but points out that Apatow's fondness for Cassavettes may mean there's places he can go. And that's just through glancing through it, but I'm excited to spend some time with the newest edition of one of the best film books out there.

Does he retroactively review the previous Anderson films? In an earlier edition I remember reading that all he had written was something along the lines of 'watch this space, someday there will be something interesting here.'

Are you talking about Paul or Wes? I think his thoughts on Wes are just an expansion on that, and he ends with: "So, watch this space." But he has nice things to say about RUSHMORE.

I meant Wes. I understood the original entry as a reaction to the hype around him, but aside from that hype, to ignore Rushmore or it and RT's influence is to skip a lot. The original version is quoted here:
