The NEW CHUD.com (Design/Staff/Focus)

We are changing. I know you've noticed. A lot more people seem to like the change than hate it, but obviously some folks miss Devin or Russ or hate the more laid back and playful tone of the site or whatever.

I will use this thread to state facts about things as well as address concerns. That said, the best best BEST place to ASK QUESTIONS is (http://chud.com/forum/showthread.php?t=115386) so it can be read by the masses.

Honestly, I'm trying to hone this thing so that at the end of December not only will be have a new site, new boards, and an iphone app... but also be fully in stride with the staff, their roles, and tons of boutique content (video stuff, lists, editorial stuff, and more) rather than just the news and DVD reviews of stuff you don't seem interested in or belittle the effort that goes into.

Keep in mind, most of you folks don't really support the really special time consuming things all that much with the FB reposts, MB threads, and stuff so it's real hard to put TOO much significance into some of the negative comments (it breaks my heart to put up a big article and watch it diminish into oblivion and I know others do too).

So, here's a quick rundown:
  • I plan to have the last volley of MB tweaks approved on Monday. Then that'll be ready for the relaunch.
  • We are beta testing the backend for the new CHUD and getting closer to making it ready. That'll be a little while longer.
  • Devin's gone, he ain't coming back. If Devin's all you care about go over to his site but don't act like it's all highbrow and we're garbage. They ran a story about the McRib sandwich today so let's not act like the grass is greener over there. It's just different grass. Nothing wrong with that, but don't overstate things.
  • If you hate it here. Get the fuck out. Don't have a big dramatic "I'm leaving post". FUCK OFF. Take the self loathing where it belongs.
  • There's another Skeleton IV article coming this week. Deal with it.

CHUD is about having fun. We're having fun and we're hoping some of it is contagious. Some ideas are going to take time to blossom. Some never will. But we're trying to keep it fun and not be like the other sites. But for every list we do that doesn't connect with you, there'll be three that do. So hang in there puppy.

Also, seriously...

We need the Facebook 'likes' and when you repost an article it makes a big difference. Same goes for Tweets and subscriptions to our newsletter.

Thanks for listening and for the most part I couldn't be happier with this community. A lot of great people. Some that need adjusting a little and some that hurt the overall quality but show me a family that doesn't have that,

More to come. Post here and I will answer.

Looking forward to seeing what NEW CHUD has in store! Already enjoying some of the new voices and it will be fun to see how things shake out re: staff roles ETC

PS Lately I have been browsing the site from my iPod Touch a lot , and I am personally very excited for the APP

EDIT In all seriousness I have no problem with food reviews (like McRib). In the THINGS CHUD SHOULD DO thread I suggested the site adopt a feature similar to the AV CLUBs TASTE TEST
post #3 of 83
Aside from the Fantastic Fest hiccup, I haven't noticed a drop in quality from the site; and even that torture was saved by a series of well done reviews by a new writer. You have a great crew, and more Rappe & Rothe have only broadened (pun intended) the quality of writing here. Love that Steve Murphy is on staff too. Keep it up Nick, you are doing a great job! I, for one, CAN wait for the new site. Take your time, do it right…
post #4 of 83
Love that CHUD is getting more loose and that Nick and the crew are having fun doing this stuff they've been putting out lately. Great articles and loving the start of the new video reviews.

Been here for a long time, and even if I wasn't a part of The B-Movie Podcast (which I'm very thankful to Nick for setting up for us) I wouldn't be going anywhere. Love this place and looking forward to all the new stuff that's going to debuting soon.
Nick Nunziata, I look forward to the changes at...CHUD.COM! I...Love all the dedication, given by you and your team. CHUD.COM is...THE, best website for news and info on the web. I am also a big fan of the boards, and loved being part of...2 B Movie Podcasts.
There really are a lot of exciting things going on here and it really is ALL for you guys. Not every single thing we do is going to appeal to every single person but that's why we do so much, so that hopefully each of you can find something to love, even if you find something to hate right next to it.

Each and every person on staff here loves what we do as much as we love where we do it. Focus on that and instead of wasting all the energy to decry the things that don't work for you, support the things that do.

And stay tuned - New CHUD is shaping up to be the Best CHUD yet.
Once you get used to the changed lay-out, the new forums are great too.
Nick, I have no problems with how CHUD is right now. Looking forward to your upgrades.

Truth be told, while I love Devin's Editorials, the atmosphere on the boards has been a lot more loose and fun since he left.
Oh we got some wonderful toys to put a smile on that face.

Nicholson to Ledger. Yes... I just went there!
Glad we are heading back to Fun Chud, can't wait to see the changes
post #11 of 83
Nick, as someone not very keen on the whole FB and Tweeter stuff can you suggest any other way for me to help the site? I'm pimping the site to my friends but since I'm not in school anymore we're talking about actual friends and therefore limited in number.
I've enjoyed the new stuff. Especially the video content and lists (new and old).

While I'd say "I come for the news and reviews, I stay for the lists and whatnot" that doesn't mean I don't truly think the news and reviews on the site is some of the best of its kind on the web (more so with more Nick and some great stuff by the new guys/gals).

...Also, while I forward and repost a lot of my favourite CHUD pieces I didn't realise that *liking* was that much use to the site. Prepare to *liked* to the shit

Yes, yes, and YES.

I'm excited not just by this, but by all the changes and prospects for CHUD's future. For the record, I never felt the "fun" ended. It just got overshadowed at times by a prevailing air of smugness and glib behaviour from some. Still, it's great to see the place lighter and breezier.

Deal with it? I anticipate it!

Nick, I've said it before 'round here and I'll say it again: I never thought I'd post on a messageboard, much less be a regular. It's a tribute to CHUD and the Sewer that I'm here (and that's not meant to sound pretentious).

And I love the new atmosphere. It's nice to have fun AND discuss movies/tv/music/etc.

Your humor and your enthusiasm is what brought me to the site; I am 100% sincere when I say I want nothing but the best for the site. But this stuff:

Time to move on from this stuff. You flare up with it, say you're done, lock threads, then keep. Bringing. It. Up. On various platforms. Then people keep patting you on the back for "taking the high road" and "not making it public." Over and over. It's ringing hollow.

You'd have to reach pretty hard to call me a troll for saying any of this. I'm not a troll; I'm telling you it's bringing the site down. If you want everyone to move past it, set an example. I get feeling hurt and taking things personally and even primal impulses like pettiness and anger, separation anxiety and abandonment issues, but it's time to try harder.

I suspect you'll take this badly and not take any of it to heart, but I do still love this community and this stuff is tainting it. As a black guy said to me last week, "just do you."

Love,

Phil

I take such criticisms differenty from you than say SLATER. I agree for the most part, but I bite my tongue ALL THE TIME and sometimes I just need to vent a little to stay sane.

I know it's not the best thing to do (though sometimes it feels so good I don't care), but I'm not even close to perfect.

The Twitter thing was hilarious! I didn't mean that to be anything but a funny comment. I joked that I was going to have someone take over The Devin's Advocate and never address the fact it's called that. You know, how some stores evolve over time and the significance of the name wanes? But that wasn't me being a dick. That was 100% silliness.
Sacred Cows, Horror 101 and This Day in History are all kicking major ass right now.
Is there a chance of you leaving me out of this shit already? I'm so sick of getting links to niggling shitty little things you say. Move on. Yes, it would be ironic to have Skeleton IV do a Devin's Advocate column, but mostly because that column was known for being intelligent and interesting and Skeleton IV is an embarrassment.

We get it - your site is important. My site ran a McRib article. Sorry I was too busy doing a national promo tour (you know, like your GRIM REAPER tour) to keep my site updated. If you could just stop typing about me I'd really appreciate it. It's so fucking frustrating. You have your office and your hilarious Morning Zoo crew and you have your site and I'm really happy for you so can't you just be happy for me and ignore what I'm doing? I'm sending you the fucking set visit reports that I owe you - what else do you want from me? What else do I have to do so that you just fucking let this whole thing go and stop taking cutesy shots? I know you must have license plates to photograph.
And please just close this message board account.
Wow.

Hey Devin, Skeleton IV is just a goofy article. It's not meant to be the new Devin's Advocate. CHUD ran goofy stuff when you worked here.

Sounds like Rev Run &/or Russell Simmons (they happen to brothers BTW). Such passion and power behind the ''just do you.''

Nick, I admire your restraint for not saying everything you want to say, but this is why you should redouble your tongue-biting efforts. The boards (and site in general) are more fun now than they have been in ages and the sooner they're rid of blemishes - like tangents such as these - the better. The first step to that is letting stuff like this slide.
It's sad to log onto CHUD in the morning only to see this animosity once again bubbling to the surface. I wish we could all just move on and enjoy the building anticipation for the new site

PS I'd previously 'advocated' continuing the DEVIN'S ADVOCATE under new leadership after Devin's departure. It's a brand name that has come to stand for intelligent discussion, as Devin himself stated in this very thread, and it's a brand name that CHUD owns. Unlike STAR TREKKIN', he did not take it with him when he left.

CHUD should keep the column going, not for gag articles, but thoughtful and incisive writing. Maybe turn it over to Josh Miller or Elizabeth Rappe? It would honor Devin's legacy on CHUD while continuing to provide the kind of content many people have come to expect from the site

Just my take, for what it's worth
The Devin's Advocate makes no sense as a serious column without Devin. Leave it be on both accounts.

First of all, you need to take blood pressure meds because most of what I've been saying has been very lighthearted and silly and people who send you links are just little kiss-ups who you ought to know exist only to stir the pot. The Skeleton IV joke wasn't about your beloved column but the way it'd send trolls into a conniption. It truly had nothing to do with you and if you'd lighten up you'd get that. I cracked one 'deadbeat' joke, which is wholly in my power to do because of how loony that whole situation is.

In truth what the fuck have I been saying? Nothing. So take a dump and loosen up.

Second of all, I don't allude that this site is important. I'm just making a point when people say that your site is some highbrow blahblahblah (and your passive aggressive posts about how sites who run Variety news are dogshit) and we're not... they're all just sites. You can run a McRib review and it's acceptable and I can take license plate photos [you pick the weirdest shit to deride] and it's fine. The grass isn't greener over at your blog, just different. That was the point I made with class and aplomb.

As for supporting one another, I've gone on record about five times on the site and podcast saying how happy for you I am, even after the 'incident'. I fucking linked to your site in the last Steady Leak, when all CHUD gets from you a non-linking mention in offhand remarks. I am proud of you and happy for you but it doesn't excuse me from realizing that once I wasn't of value to you, you because an absolute asshole to me. Still, I am proud of you.

[things I want to say but won't]

But it's not like I'm talking about you behind your back. I'm cracking little jokes because I do that shit all the time. Levity is all I have against the bullshit that went down.

Thirdly, way to jab at Grim Reaper. Seriously. Classy.

Fourth of all, your MB account is closed because frankly, I'm tired of being reminded of the big mistake I made.

BYE.

Note to people sending Devin links: What size skirt do you wear?

Sorry about that, folks...

Back on point.

We will be starting to announce the new features of the site and boards on Monday.
NEW CHUD.com FEATURES! SICK!!!
If the new features do not include a video of the CHUD office enjoying their Friday afternoon mass shunting then I'll be disappointed.
Good Lord Devin's post got needlessly ugly real quick.

Anyways, can't wait for some (hopefully) detailed descriptions of new features. It's been too long with just hints of stuff. I want some real teases!
Awesome! Glad to hear the new features are going to be announced starting monday.
Monday you say? Woop! If you also hint at an further announcements concerning the CHUD iPhone app the wait will be twice as long.

We're truly in the home stretch. Furious emails going back between the 6 or so of us trying to tie all of these threads together. I am SO excited for the new site.
All this talk about the new stuff is making me excited. I got to see it as soon as possible.
Can't wait. It's an exciting time for CHUD.
Sorry, I'd love to stay and give this closure but I'm still busy releasing a movie with Chris Morris, no less. I will take questions about you later from my flatterers on Twitter.

Ugh. Devin is ruining my geek favorites with the constant worship of Morris, Edgar Wright, and other "discoveries". My own personal L Ron Hubbard of unshaven bloggers.

Loving the the new kinder, gentler CHUD. Looking forward to whatever you have in store for us Nick.

*Not to "Stir the pot," but I wonder if the McRib that Badass reviewed was one of the 5 or 6 that you know Devin keeps in his desk drawer?

heh i keep jumping over and just gazing at the new front page.....

i love this site so much. it really is my favorite site on the internet...

I'm not naming names... but let's just say there is more than one person no longer around that is now inspiring me to make the CHUD Forums one of my homes again. Reading the main site will still be the focus, though.

Is it just me or has Elisabeth been scarce the past few days? Did we cause a problem by voicing too much support for her?

Cuz if so, something about some of Steve Murphy's latest articles seems so right for CHUD as well.
