So excited for this. I love a good mind trip, and the sexy girls kicking ass with all kinds of weapons doesn't hurt.
I think they did a test screening of this near me a few weeks ago (I saw a picture of Vanessa Hudgens on the dude's clipboard and I can't think of anything else she's going to be in). I have a feeling the studio doesn't quite know what to do with this movie, either.

The Mona who? The Sistine what? A Starry huh?
Why do I get the sinking feeling this is another one of those "she wakes up to find out she's dead" stories? And the set design has a certain Tokyo Gore Police thing going on without the cultural touchstones.

Snyder's movies just haven't done it for me yet. That Owl one was okay, I guess.
Hahahaha, he speed-ramped floor-scrubbing you guys.
I cannot find anything to be interested in here.
I agree Nick.

Looks like a lot of fun action. When The Levee Breaks was actually used well here, in such a far-removed context.

I'm a bit concerned that the film won't really be about anything really grounded. Say what you will about the Matrix but there are a lot of great ideas being batted around in that film while all the action is 'splodin'. I'm hoping that's also the case here but the 5 item fetch quest seems kinda video gamey.

First: a joke: "Isn't it a little too soon to reboot Girl: Interrupted"

Comment proper: Wow. I don't know art, but I know what I like, and I like nubile warrior chicks in leather (pleather? either way I'm good) fighting monsters to rock music.

Snark: And I'm sorry, but my Jena Malone stance holds true. She cannot fucking keep her head still when she speaks. It's like she's a shark and has to work air through her gills to get noises to come out of her mouth.*

*Dear guy that "corrected" my use of the term Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle in the Zombie Girl review: I know that this is not true for all sharks, so please relax

I was beginning to think I was the only one.

I just don't get it. How does this look good again?
Looks good. Son of Krypton is in good hands.
Sucker Punch, does not look as good as either...Watchmen or 300, but it does promise, a fun action film with a plethora of collateral damage.
Needs more John Hamm.

It was cool looking, but that's pretty much it.
I guess some people (like myself) are suckers for ridiculous robots, dragons and swords in the same way that some people (unlike myself) are suckers for Westerns or certain types of horror. I don't anticipate this being a movie I will ever assertively defend, but we've all got our brand of dope. This is my dope.
Fair enough. One man's heroin is another man's duster.
I like the giant samurai in BRAZIL! This trailer had me laughing at it. The content of this movie, so far, seems absurd.

What if we like robots, dragons, swords AND westerns? Does that mean I'm one of those junkies that's one step away from death?

The only Snyder movie that's let me down is Ga'Hoole and even that I thought was all right. I'm curious to see what he does with an original story. I may walk out saying "That guy can't write for shit" but right now, I do respect him for trying.
The "one-knee drop from an astonishing height" is so visually hacky. This continues to look miserable.
I had the same reaction to this trailer as I did to Scott Pilgram Vs the World.; this is so weird I have to see it. I loved Scott Pilgram, so I'm looking forward to Sucker Punch.

If Freddie Mercury was still alive, Queen would be doing the soundtrack.
Well, I guess I'm gonna have to be in the minority in my excitement about this.
Same, stelios. This looks like a feature-length Old Spice commercial.
Ugh... looks like Hot Topic: The Motion Picture.
It's funny, the more I see of this the less I understand it.

I... think... I... like... it?

I feel like my dog when another dog starts barking on the television...

Not everybody's cup of tea - to each their own. But I dig it. This is a concept artist's wet dream and chock-full of incredibly jaw-dropping visuals. At the very least, it's gonna LOOK sensational and I can live with that. If this is any indication of what he's bringing to SUPERMAN (along with a solid script), then I'm content.

Ticket = sold!

When The Levee Breaks! must... resist...
So, I wake up to a trailer for a big budget movie from a guy who, speed ramping gimmick aside, handles action with the best of them, with a potentially fucked up psychological angle, underscored by Led Zeppelin, that includes a plethora of hot women, swordfights, WWII reimaginings, cyborgs, dogfights, dragons, samurai, fantasy tropes, and Jon goddamn Hamm, and the prevailing reaction is "Meh"?

In the words of Gene Wilder: We're awake....but very puzzled.

Looks like a fucking blast to me. No idea where the disconnect is happening for the rest of you, but for reasons beyond my explanation it kinda makes me sad.
Justin, all those parts may be cool in and of themselves but the finished product just seems far too calculated for a target demographic for my tastes. While there is ample technical skill on display it would seem to be in service of a story I could not give two shits about populated by derivative characters and designed by a spastic 12 year old boy playing video games. Tony Scott's DOMINO looks to have more heart than this. Snyder just doesn't work for some folks. And he has yet to stretch himself beyond his "signature" moves.

But you have every right to be psyched about a movie. And you are certainly not alone. Ms. Rappe, my favorite new voice on CHUD, appears to be sold on this bad boy (girl), so you are in very good company there. But my mop did not flop.
When I saw the first posters and the original teaser for this film, it caught my interest. But over time I've felt that interest dwindle. I don't know if it's the new trailer or perhaps I'm just being swayed by the general sense of ennui on here, but I'm also not really seeing much to get excited about. The visuals for all the fantasy sequences look like you could freeze any frame and you'd end up with an illustration that you'd find at a science fiction convention.

In a way, it reminds me of What Dreams May Come. That film had striking visuals but I felt it ended up being just a mess. I didn't enjoy watching it at all.

All that being said, I'll probably still see it in the theaters unless I hear it's unwatchable.

All that stuff looks awesome. But this isn't a demo effects reel or an video art exhibit. It's a movie. So what worries at least me, is the fact that every time a character opens their mouth, stilted dialogue and bad acting slap me in the face, and the plot seems cribbed from a lesser Gameboy Zelda.
"The fifth thing is a mystery!" ... magnificent dialogue right there.

Pretty much what I'd expect from Snyder: A bunch of kewl pretty pictures that aren't actually about anything.

Seconded. I don't really expect anything regarding actual plot or meaning, but I'm fully in and excited for the visual ride. Giant robot samurais? Dragons torching fighter planes? Badass chicks with guns and swords? Holy shit, where do I buy my ticket?
Yeah after watching that trailer a few times, I'm sort of approaching this as a live action version of a film like Heavy Metal. It's not going to have the depth of The Godfather, but will it be the sort of cult film blitzed teenagers want to watch for its kitchen-sink-and-all visual head fuckery as a late night feature for the next few decades?

I'm thinking 'yes' - and you know what? That's okay too. There's not enough of those films being made with a budget like this one these days. Blitzed teens gotta watch shit after too many cones at 2am too ya know.
Yeah, for the record (not that anyone cares) I'm excited for this as visual, visceral spectacle. I'd probably be a lot more optimistic if Snyder wasn't attached to Superman.
That insane asylum sure has a large mascara budget.

You're supposed to hate this RD, it wasn't made in the '70s. Get with the program.

I don't know what Snyder has in mind for this and if he'll be able to surprise me, but I'm going to approach this with exactly the expectations you describe.

Yeah, it's like Beavis and Butthead are headbanging in my mind making devil horns and singing the main riff from 'Iron Man' at how much batshit fun this looks. I think it's just as important to remain connected to our inner teens as it is our inner child. This film seems like a perfect way to do that.

The thing with Heavy Metal is that it has appealing actors (voice talent) and is peppered with bits of clever writing on top of being a silly, violent, cartoon titty flick* that you can get high to (if you're so inclined). Snyder wouldn't know clever if it speed ramped on his face.

*With a fucking Elmer Bernstein score, no less.
Looks pretty damn stunning to me, especially in terms of action (which is why I'm thrilled about Snyder directing Superman: he can sure teach Nolan how to stage a great-looking action scene) and pure visual spectacle. I don't need all of my movies to be about something profound all of the time, but it looks like Snyder is trying. Fuck the rest of you.
Looks like some ok action. To be fair, if you put When The Levees Break over the Remains of The Day trailer, I would think it had some ok action.
I kind of liked DAWN OF THE DEAD, flat out hated 300, and want to love WATCHMEN (but can't) and yet I'm still intrigued by this. I love Snyder's visual sensibility and I'm hoping that divorced from the shaky politics of 300 and my love of WATCHMEN'S source material I might find something to love in this.
Love that eyeball shot at 0:12.

Despite whatever faults he may have, I flat-out love Snyder's visual sensibilities.
I really hope it has a great and engaging story cause visually it just feels completely oversaturated content-wise. It's one of those movies so choke full of dazzling visuals that the excitement center of your brain shuts down after 10 minutes of exposure and you just sit there watching with a blank stare.

My feelings exactly. Just being "cool" is not what made Heavy Metal a cult hit.
I think Snyder is a lot cleverer than people tend to give him credit for in his choices as a director, but ah well. He's clearly a divisive filmmaker, and you either embrace his style (as I do) or despise it (as many others do).

It's not exactly easy to stage half of what he's attempting here. He deserves some credit for that alone.
After seeing the...Giant Robots in the trailer for this cinematic...Sucker Punch, I am all for, Superman Vs a mad scientist that wants to use a...Massive Robot Army to take over, The Earth!
I would also love to see Snyder adapt, Ufo Robot Grendizer, or any of Go Nagai's Classic Anime Series!
I don't mean to sound prickish, but it's amazing how right on cue everyone starts making excuses for Snyder that they wouldn't make for other films/filmmakers.

"Yeah it looks totally hollow... but so what?"

To each their own, I guess.
A while back, just for kicks, I dug up some of the old pre-release Watchmen threads, back when everyone was happily convinced that Snyder had nailed it, unleashed his hidden artsy intellectual side and was about to shift to a higher level as a director. Kind of funny how much the popular attitude has shifted since then. Seems pretty clear at this point that, for better or worse, 300 tells us all we need to know about him as a director.

I mean, I can see how this movie could be fun, but I also bet I wouldn't miss a whole lot if I skipped it and waited a year or so until someone posts a youtube compilation of all the most 'awesome' money shots. I also get the feeling this will underperform and hammer yet another nail in the coffin of big budget geek fetish movies.
Could this be the next generations Tank Girl? it has that feel to me.

Synder's infatuation with slo-mo and speed ramps is indefensible. Is that really the pinnacle of his film-making creativity?
