Unimportant characters can survive a horror movie too.

This is definitely the best feature running on the site right now. I love it.

The level of nerdy dissection present in this column is mind boggling. I seriously fear for your mental health, Josh. In the end you wind up with a drill against your head.

Keep being awesome.

These are Onion AV Club-level great.

So, Han Solo = the ultimate example of The Helpful Straggler?

Also, surprised you didn't mention the now-widely-discredited theory that Childs is not a Magician Staggler at all, but something else . . . .

The test is simple, just ask yourself: would the events of [insert film] be altered if [insert character] were replaced with treasure? In this case, no. War of the Worlds' story would play out almost exactly the same if Rachel were an urn of ashes or a briefcase that contained the secret to defeating the alien invaders. Rachel is a Prop Kid.
You could argue that the daughter is a bit more valuable than luggage though, since the main character's arc is effected by her. He grows as a father due to protecting her (and inversely for letting the son be his own man). I don't think that change would come about if she was an urn of ashes.

And where does LL in DEEP BLUE SEA fit in? Would he be a magician? Not for disappearing, but for surviving beyond the "black guys always die in horror flicks" cliche?

Would Manning (J Tambor) in HELLBOY also be a magician because he was forgotten?

Han Solo is indeed the king. It was hard to fight the urge to use him as an example. Originally I did mention the Childs theory, but ultimately cut it out. The film doesn't really imply anything, so it seemed to be distracting from topic at hand.

Nah, I'm going out like Sterling Hayden in THE LONG GOODBYE. Get boozed up and walk into the ocean. Like a fuckin' man.

I'm speaking more in a structural sense. Cruise may have an arc, but the individual scenes between Cruise and Fanning could go by mostly unchanged, I think.

Does LL disappear in DEEP BLUE SEA? I can't recall. And HELLBOY doesn't easily fit into horror conventions. It has monsters and murder, but it more so plays in the tropes of superhero, fantasy and action films. But in this context, Manning would probably be a Magician, as he manages to avoid the big climax.

Pretty sure LL disappears for a fairly short time. But it's just to set up a scare in which he saves the rest of the people.

The movie actually follows him a fair amount of the time while he's separated from the others.
