I'm thinking Newt will say something that reminds people why nobody really likes him.   The guy says some funny/scary/crazy things when he's full of hubris.   See his comments about arresting judges, hiring kids to do Janitor work for roughly $1 per hour and other gems.   Romney will probably just do what he's done at every debate.   Turn every answer into an attack on Obama.   In other words, he'll get asked a question and then just continue his stump speech piecemeal.

The suspense is what makes primary season better for me than any sportsball contest on TV. (They still have those, right?) Gingrich is still in the race is because Romney is appalling. Romney is still in the race is because Gingrich is appalling. Both men are still in the race because a single-minded obsession with what other people do in their bedrooms isn't enough of a foundation for Santorum to build a campaign on.

Who's going to self-destruct next? Who's going to be the most insulting to the conservative Latino voters in Florida with his tone deaf pandering? Who's going to call them "you people" while speaking to them? Who's going to promise the most blood-curdling violence in Iran to Boca Raton's Jewish voters? Who's going to remind them that America's Evangelical Christians want the Temple rebuilt in Jerusalem so that Jesus will come back and kill them all? I cannot stop watching this shit!

Fred Phelps' son just endorsed Obama. Is you mind blown yet? I haven't seen anything that insane since Joe Namath turned heel and cost the Lakers a home run that one time.

Reasor, it's hilarious how much you're enjoying this.

Fun fact, Fred Phelps was once a social activist and civil rights attorney whose efforts for racial equality earned him a commendation from the NAACP. He's also a lifelong Democrat.

What I'm getting at here is that the greater Phelps family, while completely insane and just terrible at being human, is also unpredictable.

I became politically aware around the time David Duke (Former Grand Wizard of the KKK) ran for Governor of my then home state of Louisiana.   That election was dubbed the "Election from Hell" because the other guy running was 4 time corrupt as hell former Governor Edwin Edwards.    So who do you choose in an election like that.   Thankfully the KKK guy was defeated and we had Edwin Edwards for another 4 years.   I say that to say this.   There hasn't been an election since then with so many bad choices as what we're seeing in the GOP Primary Season right now.   And apropos to that, Newt Gingrich sounds EXACTLY like David Duke these days in his race baiting.

Real talk, I was sixteen when Desert Shield/Desert Storm became our first prolonged military conflict since Vietnam. The tension, the relief when the Iraqis crumbled, the non-stop media barrage, all at what must have been a period of imprint vulnerability*. something clicked, and I've been a national politics junkie ever since.

*My taste in music is firmly stuck in 1991 as well.

Oh, shit, it's time.

The first sentence out of Newt's mouth is to compare himself to Reagan. Thank Lucifer I'm not playing a drinking tonight.

And it's on like Donkey Kong.   Romney takes the gloves off and Newt tries to evade by telling people to go to his site.   Romney gets first blood.

So far, not a peep from the audience.   Weird.

Newt is Hulking Out.

First part of the debate is over and it's pretty much the Romney/Newt show with Ron Paul and Santorum playing extras.   I think Romney's strategy is to get Newt to blow up and it's working brilliantly.

And Newt Gingrich wants to declare war on Cuba now.   Ron Paul has it so right on Cuba it's crazy.

EDIT:   Sorry for so many mullets in a row!

Wow so Newt wants Bay of Pigs II, and Ron Paul is the voice of reason.

.. and Romney wants to keep the Afghan war going and going and going....

wow, those dudes sitting behind Brian Williams....it looks like the GOP is getting their clones made from defective Venture Industries technology...

Wow Ron Paul on Iran is pretty damn impressive. Wonder what all the Floridians think of all his Hippie talk.....

I like how the candidates are ranked by height!

1. Newt's head is like an orange on a toothpick. He's like Sputnik!

2. Santorum has tiny, tiny eyes.

3. Newt is taking Romney apart. He's completely full of shit, but he's a master at sounding sure, right, and knowledgeable.

4. Ron Paul needs to spring for fitted suits. He's swimming in that jacket.

One thing I forgot to mention was Newt's epic brain fart.   He was quiet for something like 10 seconds after Romney attacked him.   Paul's ideas on Cuba are right on.   If something hasn't worked for 50 years, it might be a good idea to try something else.   The only reason we haven't is because Florida is a swing state and Cubans hold sway in the state.

Also, I don't know if the SC Republicans are more extreme but the Florida audience is very well behaved.   And here comes Santorum with the Iraq War part 2.

Also: I loved Romney's answer to the war in Afghanistan: "You win." Williams misses a huge opportunity to press him on specifics.

I have to say that I agree with Newt on English as the official language. It's why India actually uses English as the "business language"; it allows them to communicate amongst a population that includes 100's of dialects.

Also: Newt tries to conflate the situation with Iran with Pearl Harbor and 9/11. Ever the historian!

Implication: Romney wants to kill all the Taliban. All of them. Which was the strategy employed in Vietnam: decimate the enemy's armed forces rather than take and hold strategic points.

So the Military Option towards citizenship is how we'll find troops to fight the bugs/ excuse me/ Iranians, Cubans and any other brown people Republicans want to bomb.

Romney gives a 5 word answer to a question and spends the next, so far, 2 minutes on a  stump speech on how bad Obama is.   Totally not related to the question of whether he supports sugar subsidies or not.   Romney just sounds desperate tonight.

Romney is so one note it's mind blowing. Sing a different tune already man.

And the ghost of Terry Schaivo haunts the '12 election cycle.   That was strange.   And once again, Ron Paul is the voice of reason on this.

Every time Romney said "Space Coast" I heard "Space Ghost"

Newt wants to award prizes to anyone who can get to the Moon and Mars. I'm off to the Junk Yard to scrap together a craft!

This debate is making me cry.

Newt's an asshole but I love his enthusiasm about the Space Program.   There's no reason for a man to step foot on Mars but dammit I want to see it in my lifetime.

Romney's trick of pretend to answer the question and then pivot to attacking Obama for the balance of his time is so fucking annoying.

Did anyone just else get a Pro-Obama commercial? I can't imagine many people watching the ump-teenth GOP debate hasn't already made their mind up on which party they're going to vote for.

Some people still claim to be undecided. Shrug.

Man the more I hear Romney the more I'm reminded of Nixon.

True, but I figure most of the "Undecided"s would have already gone to bed after Two and Half Men ended.

Romney may give answers like Nixon, but I think Newt's far more Nixonian: mean, willing to do hamstring his opponents with a smile, and the epitome of "that applies to everyone but me" mindset.

Yeah but Romney grovels like Nixon did while his Super Pac puts out blatant, nasty lies.

Romney just bragged that he has more money than a dead guy.

Romney gloats about driving his political opponent into debt! I think he's a vicious asshole masquerading as a malleable asshole.

ETA: jinx!

One positive about this debate: NBC has shut up the wingnuts in the audience. No "spontaneous" applause, no cheering death, and no booing. We can actually listen and absorb the fuck-tons of bullshit being thrown at us!

Newt's periodic positive comments to Ron Paul is such a blatant attempt to try and get RP supporters to vote for him...

...until the Moderator praises The Bulls!

What about how Romney's first example of his "conservative credentials" was the fact that he raised a family? Because all the single parents, separated/divorced parents and liberal parents are worth jack shit.

That was some pretty blatant political fellating going on.

You could literally replace Romney with a tape recorder with bits of nothing but quotes from his previous debates. Gingrich is a fascist bastard but Romney is just such a used care salesman snake that he deserves to lose.

The beautiful thing about this was that it got the candidates to stop fishing with cheap applause lines and start calling bullshit on each other's lies. The fact that Front Runner Newt campaigns differently from Underdog Newt made for a drier form of entertainment than previous debates, but I had fun watching it and mouthing off in real time on Twitter.

Whenever Romney says he has a huge family or brags about how long he's been married, you always have to add "unlike Gingrich"  to it for that to make sense.

You're absolutely right, but I still found it hard to not be insulted. But I guess I'm not his target audience, at least until August or so.

...Hey folks, it's the NBC Embeds! Aren't they HAWT!?

I know it doesn't stand a chance in hell of occurring, but why can't all the planets align and give us a GOP debate moderated by Stephen Colbert instead of this dreck?

It would be a thing of magnificent beauty on par with his speech at the 2006 White House Correspondents Dinner.
