Missed headline opportunity: GOP Convention To Stand Its Ground

Yeah, nothing bad could come from this.

I'm pretty sure the Tampa convention is just a trap, set by Governor Nosferatu, to trick the GOP bigwigs into bringing their precious hemoglobin where he can easily reach it.

ETA: It's apparent now that Ron Paul wasn't kidding when he gave one primary night speech after another touting his campaign's "caucus strategy. Ron Paul's "caucus strategy" has, from the beginning of the campaign, entailed using party rules to stage an undemocratic hostile takeover of the delegate process.

You just know that if firearms are allowed in the convention, the white supremacist/militia movement/NRA Venn diagram that constitutes a large part of his support network is going to be the most heavily armed contingent on the convention center floor. This convention promises to make for some smashing television.

Guns at the convention? Damn it, don't they understand that would only increase the chance of Jesus getting shot when he reappears at the convention?!

With that crowd, I bet yelling out "Queer!" would have a domino effect that would result in the convention turning into the world's biggest Mexican stand-off.

Folks sometimes react violently to being startled.

A balloon popping unexpectedly can be very startling.

Lots of balloons at conventions.

Just sayin.

Gotta agree with Lauren; the slapstick bloodbath you guys are imagining would be infinitely more exciting than the tepid Mittfest we'll actually get.

I have a whole list of things that most likely won't happen.*

It's kind of depressing really.

*One of them is invisible cannibal Christopher Walken.

I'd PAY to see that...oh...

Did anyone else just imagine Christopher Walken just leaping on the back of Mitt Romney, Gollum style, while trying to eat the guy's hand?

After seeing Ravenous mentioned in another recent thread, I pictured Walken sitting at the bank of a mountain stream, eating ribs.

I honestly just want Christopher Walken on the loudspeakers saying.

"Now...GOP..it's time for you to fight...what you can't....SEE."

I'm looking forward to how many caveats will be used during the GOP convention. Has there ever been a GOP candidate that has gotten such a "meh" response from all wongs of the party? I have yet to hear from one person who can muster any real enthusiasm for the guy? Also, from what I've seen so far, Romney is running an ineffectual general election campaign. Embarassingly so. The dog meat story? The whining about Obama using OBL in his campaign ads, and taking credit for the auto bailouts? This is going to be a bloodbath.

It can't be reasoned with. It can't be bargained with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until it is elected.

Snaike.  He's the only really pro-Romney guy I know of, and we chased him out of here.

Romney's campaign has been John Kerry's squared.  "I was for it before I was against it" over and over again.

I don't think we chased Snaieke out of here.  I think that's just how he rolls.  He only really posts in the political forum when he's got a zinger.

As far as it being a bloodbath, I'm still way too worried about voter suppression, anti-voter laws, voting machine hacking, etc., as well as all the billions that are going to be funneled into SuperPacs to swiftboat Obama in the final stretch, that I won't feel Obama has it in the bag until and unless he actually has it in the bag.

I'm with you on not taking stuff for granted but didn't the GOP pretty much shoot their load the last time?   I mean it feels like they are reaching for the c-level material these days with the dog eating story and that video showing Obama hugging some "radicalist".   All things being fair at the voting booth, I can't see how this won't be a landslide but at the same time, I won't sleep easily until he is elected again.

I just don't want the first black President to be a one-termer. If Obama loses (God forbid) future historians could look back and say, "Yeah, we tried having a black President once.....once. It didn't work out".

As I figure it, it's worth spending the length of the general election with the mindset that Obama could very easily lose - that he's being seriously challenged and we need to show up in droves, as if every last person counts - for another four years of certainty (at which point things get more interesting).  I don't want to become overly confident and not take an active approach - even if the GOP has tepidly embraced Romney, the anti-Obama message is strong enough in their circles to keep me on my toes.

Obama could be up against Milosevic and I'd still be worried, if only due to the endless amount of money the spin artists have at their disposal this election year. It's frightening, even though I do genuinely believe he's got it.

Don't be silly.  Those historians* won't say that a black President was a failed experiment.  They'll say a secret Kenyan Muslim President was a failed experiment.  (And it just so happens that every future black Democrat running for President will also be secretly foreign-born Muslims.  You know, probably.  Just to be safe.)

I think Obama may have a big problem with voter apathy.  Rombot too, but the GOP is better at rigging/gaming the system, and he has racism on his side.

How can Romney claim to understand the economy better than Obama when he is this unrealistic?

The people writing Romney's talking points clearly don't think anyone's going to analyze them too much.  I mean, the guy said he'd get the economy going again by looking at everything the President has done and then do the opposite.  This president has overseen 26 months of solid job growth.  What is the reverse of that?

'Elected' twice, ladies and gentlemen.  TWICE.  So yeah, Obama isn't a shoe-in at all.

I was reminded of this story

just to cheer y'all up even further.  Some of the specific problems are out of date, but the core problem is still there I'm sure.  Can't even get voting itself clear of someone's monied interests.

Watching Obama's first rally.  Damn Michelle is looking fine......

Two days ago I had an aunt tell me, her a very loud voice, that Obama shouldn't get any credit for the job growth. In the same breath she did give him credit for the auto bail out. She also believes that while Obama is a nice guy; he is evil as well. I just smirked the whole time.

True dat!

Ron Paul won the majority of Maine's delegates.

I'll never understand what certain people see in this man.  He's not as awful as most mainstream Republicans, but a lot of his policies sound like a nightmare should they ever be realized.  I know there's strong consensus by some that libertarians are the "smarter Republicans", but I see even more to oppose in the libertarians - they're just not nearly as widespread.

Ron Paul is aiming for some sort of insurgent brokered convention.  That may just involve bringing more guns to the convention floor.

Also a good reminder, the GOP hates you:

So wait a second.   GUNS are going to be allowed at a convention that chooses the next Republican nominee for president?   What could go wrong?   I mean are guns actually going to be allowed on the floor when Romney takes the stage?

someone is clearly not thinking... GUNS? HA HA HA..

No sticks, slingshots, knives, or bb guns though, they could be dangerous:

http://www.miamiherald.com/2012/05/02/2779984/knives-are-banned-at-tampas-gop.html

The statement from Scott is so absurd, my mind is boggled:

Quote:
Scott’s answered arrived Wednesday. “Like you,” the governor stated, “I share the concern that ‘violent anti-government protests or other civil unrest’ can post ‘dangers’ and the ‘threat of substantial injury or harm to Florida residents and visitors to the state.’ But it is unclear how disarming law abiding citizens would better protect them from the dangers and threats posed by those who would flout the law.”
What pandering. And how little the GOP thinks of its remaining loyal voters, that this is the party's idea of pandering. The fucking guns might as well have baby bottle nipples on them.

I'm just amazed at how stupid they are being here.   I bet the Secret Service are thrilled by this.

Meanwhile in Arizona, Sheriff Joe Arpaio in now the subject of a book written by two former members of the "posse" he was supposedly leading on the search for proof of the President's supposed foreign birth. The book accuses Arpaio of running a publicity stunt at the extent of Birthers, rather than the authentic hunt for "the truth" that the authors believed in when they signed on.

How funny.  They should trade notes with the crack investigative team Trump sent down to Hawaii to uncover the truth.   I'm surprised that there are still some "true believers" who are in some position of power.    Scary!

Considering the armed and dangerous nature of the convention, I really want a delegate (Ron Paul?) to ride in on a giant stone head:

"The gun is good ; the penis is evil."

LOL

the GOP/RNC should just retire the elephant as their 'symbol' and replace it with the Zardoz head, it would be more appropriate.

What floors me is that's it's in the service of a candidate who lies constantly. If they're looking for liars, they don't have to look that far. They're going to nominate one in Tampa.
