I generally don't read article comments on the major news websites.  It can be headache-inducing, with the temptation to respond to all of the gathered idiots.

Good ol' Mitt.

I love how "...and as a nation" is a total afterthought. "The Republicans hold on power could be slipping!...Oh, and that's totally a bad thing for unexplained reasons!"

I can't see anything short of nuclear war that will turn this around for Romney.

I mean, if there are pictures floating around of Obama eating a panda bear, with the ghost of Karl Marx, while in a mosque, the GOP would have found them by now.

When did that quote come out? Are these guys only just now realizing that their established demographics are starting to dwindle? Jesus Christ, meet reality, assholes.

Or smug pronouncements that the media is wrong and Romney is surging to a vast lead and all these reports saying that Romney is going down in flames show that the Democrats are getting desperate (because all these articles about how badly Romney is doing are liberal propaganda, you see).

One comment said "Why do we keep getting articles about Romney when we should be focusing on the economy?!?" Because articles about the guy running for President have no place in the news cycle, I guess?

I can't help but think that Rove has thrown a bunch of superpac money to eastern European programmers to develop GOP/TeaParty spambots with the intention of flooding all the 'liberal' forums and news comment sections with anti-Obama messages....

I honestly wonder about this sometimes.

I'd honestly like to believe that the number of idiots is inflated by spambotting, but there are plenty of people who think like this in the world.

China has it's "50 Cent" brigade, who are payed 50 cents a post to muddle the debate, derail discussions and prop up the gov. In any story about China, both on their own closed circuit web and in the world at large, most of those rushing to governments defense are in fact paid online agitators.

It wouldn't surprise me to hear tht something similar was being done in the midst of a presidential campaign in the US.

Perhaps, but I don't think that really diminishes the incredible amount of voting idiots who fully believe in and spread Tea Party/GOP talking points on popular websites.

The GOP was able to take a religion based on charity, goodwill, and helping out your fellow man and turn it into a party of selfishness, greed, and hate. The GOP took an idea like Socialism and equated it with Communism, and since Communism wants to remove religion... With the long-standing Cold War between USA and USSR, equating Socialism and Communism was enough to make any God-fearing American clutch their pearls in fear. It was a very short-step for the GOP to begin associating people who opposed them as Communists and therefore against God. After all, what matters more to a Christian than ensuring eternal paradise? In other words, to go against Christ for short-term goals is foolish. I can't have any alliance with the other party or I might risk my eternal salvation.

The GOP then began using other dog whistles (homosexuality, abortion, etc.) to help solidify the other side as complete Godless heathens. These heathens could be imagined as licking their lips as they tear an unborn fetus from a mother's womb to have relations with a same-sex fetus from another abortion, all the while praising Stalin and everything anti-American. Once again, voting Democrat is not worth losing my eternal soul. I will vote against my very interests to save myself from eternal damnation. A deep-rooted fear of Democrats really allowed the GOP to take their party even further to the right. Atlas Shrugged is held up in the highest regards. See, you can like Rand and still be a Christian, just because she doesn't believe in God...  It doesn't matter that Rand is anti-religion, but it matters greatly that Communism is anti-religion.

Along with the above, the GOP was able to paint a lot of people as lazy. It's one thing to help someone who needs it, but these people just need to go get a job. Hell, one of the seven deadly sins is sloth. Obviously, I can't help someone who won't avert himself from that sin. If anything, why, I'd be enabling his sin. The best, and Christian, method is to tell him to pull himself up by his bootstraps. I can't begin to give my money to the government to help you. That's socialism. I'm not going to Hell for you, no sir.

Oh I agree, but I think it's certainly a likelihood that there are anonymous message warriors out there at work too.

I feel like I should reach out to committed Republicans and explain exactly how it felt to be a Kerry supporter in 2004. They might be shocked at the similarity.

There are so many paid shills for everything from candidates to issues like climate change.  The media briefly flirted with the idea of covering it but were quickly cowed.  They're paid to post on the internet, call radio talk shows, call CSPAN, even show up at protests and rallies.  The right wing has pioneered and mastered this scam.

The quote came from that hidden video recording at that fund raiser from may. The mother jones video. Jon Stewart featured it on the daily show last night.

I was at a Greek cafe eating falafal yesterday and they had CNN with the sound on. Everyone was watching, really transfixed, listening to clips of the secret video. And I mean everyone, the cooks, the 18 year old cashier, customers of all stripes and colors and collars. No commentary, no discussion, no noise, everyone just watching. It was actually sort of surreal. It felt historic. It was really a seminal moment in my burgeoning political life, I must admit. Romney, undone by fundraising. You can't make this shit up.

That photo is pretty cool. I wish it was a real parot or macaw on his shoulder, and that the pirate outfit was as ornate and detailed as Dustin Hoffman's in Hook. I read the thread from the bottom up and at first assumed you were talking about the photo of Obama with Aung San Suu Kyi. It was surprising to instead find a photo of the president meeting with a privateer.

It should be mandatory viewing. It should be seen by everyone that considers propagating that bullshit.

ETA: This episode is breaking records for use of the word shit on cable television.

Good grief, that was hilarious. Now Colbert is destroying me. So great.

EDIT: Although I don't like both shows' focus on the date Obama said his comments...the full comments themselves are worthy of being defended.

The FULL full comments have just come out: http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/09/19/13971913-in-rest-of-98-clip-obama-speaks-of-competition-and-the-marketplace

The comments were available yesterday. Hell, they've been available for 14 years. The shows were effective in skewering Fox News' pettiness, but I wish they'd delved more into the actual points Obama was making.

I read earlier today that PA's voter ID law might not go into effect for the election. The case has been sent down to a lower court. It looks like if Romney wants to win PA, he will have to earn it for real.

I would love to engage with a Romney supporter who isn't insane, just to try to understand. Then again, that kinda rules him out.

Yeah, basically the PA Supreme Court was asking the people bringing them the case "What's the rush?" If voter fraud is so rampant, couldn't they give people time to get photo ID's rather than ram this law through right before a presidential election? Basically, they called them out on their politically motivated bullshit.

The kicked it down to a lower court to decide if it was even possible to get everyone available in the state photo ID's in 70 days, which of course it won't be.

I found this one rather amusing, although I'm not quite sure what the angle is...  Another 'don't bother voting' piece?  Thoughts?

“The public polls are mostly political,” the source argued. “Obama radicals want Romney supporters to feel discouraged and give up. Truth is that Romney’s winning.”

Well, yeah, obviously.

So, by that logic, are Romney supporters "Romney Radicals"?

It's the whole 'secret' results idea. You hear it from FOX and Dick Morris all the time. "Well, these polls that only a select few people have seen indicate that Obama is losing." The only difference in this story appears to be the secret from inside the White House. It offers the story a little more air of authenticity. "Hey, this is from someone on the inside of the Obama camp."

The goal of the story strongly suggests staying home for one side. On the other side, it helps energize the base. You know, maybe hope isn't lost. As someone from Tennessee, it sucks to cast my vote against a sea of red.  Not only is my entire state going for Romney, but my entire county and my entire district. I'm this little blue dot. It's way too easy to convince myself not to go vote. After all, what does it really matter? I know Obama loses Tennessee. No doubts. I'm practically "wasting" my vote, so to speak. With the story linked to above, it would be entirely to easy for the nation to get in that mindset. Fortunately, I trust in things like facts. Facts that show Obama is leading. I don't trust 'facts' that I can't verify for myself. Now, we're into faith. If they're asking me to have faith in FOX/Dick Morris, well, I guess I'm agnostic.

This will be my fifth time I will have voted in a Presidential election (all in Georgia) and I have never voted for the candidate that won the state.  But fuck it, if my vote will help incrementally close the gap I am happy to do it.

I'm not familiar with that publication, but from a cursory look, it appears that FOX News : News of the World :: World Net Daily : The Weekly World News.
