Essay/Short Story of the Week

Completely unnofficial! Don't know how much response this will get, or, indeed, how long I can keep it up. But similar to a thread in the music forum where a poster (I think it was eyeball kid) listed an mp3 with brief commentary every day. I'm not that verbose, so PM me your suggestions/selections (along with a brief paragraph illustrating why). I also figure that short stories and essays are more managable for folks to read (and you can read at your own leisure) than full novels.

This week's selections are:

Essay: "The White Album" by Joan Didion, appearing in the titular collection and We Tell Ourselves Stories in Order to Live: Collected Nonfiction.

Short Story: "Report on an Unidentified Space Station" by J.G. Ballard, appearing in The Stories of J.G. Ballard.

This is a fantastic idea. I'm going to try and get those two items today (or, at least the JG Ballard one..)

We Tell Ourselves Stories in Order to Live is at my library, so I can pick that up no problem. This should be a fun thing.

This week:

Essay: "Big Red One," David Foster Wallace, from Consider The Lobster

Essay: "Scenes from My Life in Porn," Evan Wright, originally published by L.A. Weekly, appeared in Wright's essential "Hella Nation," and which you can find oh-so-convienently here.
