Ooo, I like it, and pretty big names too.

I won't be able to keep from thinking of Sheen as his bad guy from Spawn...or the idea of Uncle Ben emerging from the Cambodian waters to kill Colonel Kurtz.

Still might be fun.

He came home from Nam a changed man, and raised Peter Parker. It makes perfect sense!

Nice casting, and almost casting. I really don't know what to think of this movie but I'm looking forward to it.
Martin Sheen is definitely a step...down, from Cliff Robertson, but Sally Field is definitely a big improvement over Rosemary Harris as, Aunt May! Of course, this will likely be the first movie Sally Field, was in since...Hooper, that will probably enjoy.
I take issue with the casting comment. I don't think it has anything to do with caring or artistic integrity. The casting news is coming so slowly because the the movie is so far away.
With the casting news so far, it seems to me that this movie is being taken seriously.
Martin Sheen's a fine actor, but at this point I've watched way too much West Wing for him to not pull me out of this film any time he'll show up. I really hope to be proven wrong on this.
Did anyone ever cut footage from Cronenberg's The Dead Zone into a "very special" episode of West Wing? That would have been funny.
Webb's getting himself a pretty fantastic cast. I don't really understand why people are hating on this film so much. They've been an unhappy experience for a lot of the people involved, and aside from some amazing action sequences and a few solid beats here and there, they're not untouchable.

I mean, come on folks. The first film took an incredibly, creepily expressive actor and put him in a plastic suit that covered his face and made him nothing short of comical. The second film looked great, but the only person who looked like he was having fun was the guy playing a tortured, widower scientist under the influence of a malicious A.I. No one was even trying anymore by the third film.

I'm keeping an open mind. Right now, the only thing that could deter my interest would be hearing that Peter/Spider-Man is once again an unfunny, milquetoast character.

You gotta check out NOT WITHOUT MY DAUGHTER, fleed. Field is in top form and Alfred Molina oozes menace as her sadistic husband hellbent on destroying her zest for freedom. Recommended.

Cliff Robertson and Rosemary Harris are going to be hard to top for me. Especially Harris in that moment she tries to give Peter $20 for his birthday. Manipulative as hell, but that actually gets me teared up.
Gidget as Aunt May?

Strange.
I hope they go with Sissy Spacek if Sally says no.

I'm the same way...I mean I can't picture him as anyone but The President.
Perhaps Field will bring out her Forrest Gump guns. More bedside speeches!

Having recently seen Hot Rod, all I can think about now is Ian McShane was Uncle Ben. And NOTHING else.

Patty Duke please!

Or... ditch Field. Go with Spacek. Keep Sheen. Fire Webb. Hire Malick for a reunion.

"Peter...before I go...I must tell you...Listen to your parents and teachers. They got a line on most things, so...so don't treat em like enemies. There's always an outside chance you can...learn something. Try to keep an open mind. Try to understand the viewpoints of others. Consider the minority opinion. But try to get along with the majority of opinion once it's accepted. Oh yeah, and great power and responsibility and all that."

Wow. You could take issue with something important in the world, but go ahead and take issue with a throwaway opening.

The day after the reboot was announced, there were casting rumors and massive speculation because it has a 2012 release date.

Compare this to some other 2012 releases -- MIB 3, Battleship, John Carter of Mars, even The Avengers. In comparison, Spider-Man is taking its time making its decisions. I didn't criticize that, merely noted it.

Why not comment on the actual news instead?

The casting for this movie is feeling so weird. With Sheen in there, I kinda want Uncle Ben to stick around for the whole...oh, wait, is that basically the plan?

Does that stuff happen only in the last ten minutes right before the climax of the movie?

Shades of the Illusive Man in Sheen's performance?
This is actually great casting, but I can't help but be depressed at the confirmation that we're going to get the origin pulled out of the fridge and microwaved. Why do we need to see that again? Fucking why?
Yeah. Wasn't this one supposed to be taking place during college? Or am I misremembering things?
Can't believe it took til the last two posts to notice than Sheen being cast as everyone's favourite rice peddler means we're probably going to get the origin again. JOY. I love Sheen like few others, but feh. He'd probably make a nice J. Jonah Jameson, actually.
Moltisanti, Not Without My Daughter is...not a film for me. I liked....Really liked, Sally Field in...Smokey And The Bandit 1 and 2, Hooper, Gidget, and The Flying Nun. If she is, Aunt May, that is Spectacular, and Amazing news.
I really like the casting; while Robertson was fine as Uncle Ben, I thought he was a bit old to be Maguire's uncle. I think Sheen will be great.

It's Field that, assuming she takes the role, has some big orthopedic shoes to fill. Rosemary Harris was just fantastic in what could have been a throwaway, barely one dimensional role. More than anyone else (in the films), she was Parker's anchor and grounding wire.

And I'm feeling stupid for missing it somewhere down the line - I thought Sony was aiming for a 2011 release? Or was that only for Raimi's proposed fourth Spidey film?
MichaelM, That, 2011 date was for...Sam Raimi. Spider-Man will...Swing into theaters July 3rd 2012.

OK, thanks for the clarification. 2012's going to be a big, big year for comic and genre flicks.
Stoked about Sheen. Less so the prospect of Field.

Too grizzled. Interesting, but not wholesome enough.

Uncle Ben...instant rice...Sheen...Vietnam...Hang on, head's still a little fuzzy. Let me get some more coffee and I'll put that joke together.

In the Spidey Fantasy-Casting Universe McShane is Kraven the Hunter and no-one else. I would pay good money to watch that grizzled motherfucker hunting down Andrew Garfield and growling in his best Mr. Bobinsky accent.

Rosemary Harris was just a brilliant Aunt May, but I think Field is a respectable replacement.

Really? Am I the only one who thought that Harris was insufferable in the role? Her voice combined with her overly hammy mannerisms made me root for the character to die as soon as possible, to be honest.
I don't know what kind of salaries these 2 command, but I thought this reboot was supposed to be a lower budget affair than the Raimi flicks.

Yeah, I think you might just be the only one.

x2

Her mannerisms were not hammy in the least bit to me. In fact, I found them to be genuine in the best possible way for a woman of theater, and she effortly projected the warmth and strength of her character.

May's monologues could have been insufferable, but Rosemary Harris made me sincerely love them. Harris has a voice that seems to easily lend itself well to the passion that a character like May needs.

I like this casting announcement as much as the next Bartlet voter, but you really don't understand how it could bother people that Sony is pulling the reboot lever less than 10 years after SPIDERMAN ONE?

Anyway, I love Sheen and this is awesome news. Sheen in a SPIDERMAN film is exciting to me, and I bet he'll do great. I've never seen anything starring Ms Fields, but from what I know about her I'm not sure she's right for the part

I think Stockard Channing would actually have been a much better choice:

1) Also 'sassy', if that's what the producers are going for
2) Very talented
3) Proven chemistry with Sheen

"Revenge....is like a poison."

No, you're not alone. Her character basically boils down to "Peter, I'm you loving Aunt. Now let me use some long winded analogy that relates to your secret life of which I know nothing about."

Also, can someone tell me why Pete's aunt and uncle are always portrayed as being really old? They look old enough to be his grandparents.

That's not her fault though, right? That's the fault of Rami's clumsy, cloying saccharine sweet story telling. I never really cared for any SM film after SM1, and stuff like what you just described is a big part of why. You can't blame that on the actress though

Unscientifically, I'd say 99.9% of all films from all over the world throughout all of human history are lower-budgeted than Raimi's SPIDER-MAN movies. The last one alone cost over $300M.

What I want to know is how they are going to top J. K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson. Seriously, how do you do better then Simmons?

May TOTALLY knows about Peter's secret life. Raimi all but puts up a neon sign saying "AUNT MAY HAS FIGURED OUT THAT PETER IS SPIDER-MAN BUT WON'T TELL HIM".
I didn't expect this reboot movie of Spider-man to be able to attract such big stars like Martin Sheen and Sally Field to play Parker's uncle and aunt. Either these roles will be beefed up, or the director was able to persuade them to take a minor role in this new movie. I hope the script will be good enough to justify their presence in the new Spider-man movie.

That's more like it! I'd be right up for that movie, too.

I'm surprised more people haven't thrown around Jeffrey Dean Morgan's name. Build and age-appropriate. Proven fanboy track record...

Preach it, Nick. Having Simmons reprise his role would be weird, but I really can't imagine anyone else doing it better.
