I dunno, that's a little too conspiracy theory-ish to me. As it stands, the network looks like asses who caved immediately when no one came to their defense. I don't think they'd orchestrate such humiliation just to get a temporary bump in the ratings. Keith looks like the victim here, but its not gonna make anyone like him who didn't already.

It probably isn't all a conspiracy to boost MSNBC's ratings and credibility in one fell swoop, but if one were to pull that off this is how it would be done. MSNBC gets to look like a real news org and Olbermann gets to stake his political territory out. Bottom line is he violated MSNBC policy and he just as easily should've known he was violating it while donating since it would be obvious that there would be some kind of policy. So while it may or may not be a smart plan by KO or some conspiracy (although that the much less likely scenario), it's certainly not a particularly groundbreaking one. Basically what this puts to rest is the false equivalency between MSNBC and FNC.

To me, MSNBC looks like a collection of waffling idiots. The policy is bizarre and milquetoast on its face: it's OK to donate to political parties as long as you tell them first? So Griffin/MSNBC aren't really concerned with compromised objectivity, they just want it filed with management. Olbermann got suspended for failing to add a cover sheet to the TPS report, basically.

I'm not commenting on whether it's appropriate or not for news anchors to donate or have a partisan lean; I'm not sure if it's that big a deal, myself, and it's not like Olbermann's political inclinations are any surprise. But in terms of ethical consistency, it's either OK or it's not. MSNBC fired him on a technicality, pretended it was because of their stringent code of ethics, and then un-fired him two days later, anyway. They look like they have no idea what they're doing.

I find the fact that you actually MSNBC was a well organized, well oiled machine so adorable.

Keith releases full statement; thanks supporters

He says we were critical to his success! I am honored to have been of some small assistance to the man (I signed the petition the first hour it was online)

A STATEMENT TO THE VIEWERS OF COUNTDOWN

by Keith Olbermann

I want to sincerely thank you for the honor of your extraordinary and ground-rattling support. Your efforts have been integral to the remedying of these recent events, and the results should remind us of the power of individuals spontaneously acting together to correct injustices great or small. I would also like to acknowledge with respect the many commentators and reporters, including those with whom my politics do not overlap, for their support.

I also wish to apologize to you viewers for having precipitated such anxiety and unnecessary drama. You should know that I mistakenly violated an inconsistently applied rule – which I previously knew nothing about – that pertains to the process by which such political contributions are approved by NBC. Certainly this mistake merited a form of public acknowledgment and/or internal warning, and an on-air discussion about the merits of limitations on such campaign contributions by all employees of news organizations. Instead, after my representative was assured that no suspension was contemplated, I was suspended without a hearing, and learned of that suspension through the media.

You should also know that I did not attempt to keep any of these political contributions secret; I knew they would be known to you and the rest of the public. I did not make them through a relative, friend, corporation, PAC, or any other intermediary, and I did not blame them on some kind of convenient 'mistake' by their recipients. When a website contacted NBC about one of the donations, I immediately volunteered that there were in fact three of them; and contrary to much of the subsequent reporting, I immediately volunteered to explain all this, on-air and off, in the fashion MSNBC desired.

I genuinely look forward to rejoining you on Countdown on Tuesday, to begin the repayment of your latest display of support and loyalty - support and loyalty that is truly mutual.

From what he says, the actions of Mr Griffin were every bit as shady as some of us suspected. Glad he came through it all OK, but I am sure we're going to see some righteous indignation on CDwKO tonight

Thank God for you, PK. Without you we wouldn't have Countdown or The Daily Show.
