THE CHUD PUZZLER - Amazing Race

post #1 of 40
Thread Starter
Just like the TV Reality Game Show, this is a race of participants toward a finish line with several check-points along the way. At each check-point is a puzzle. Being the first to correctly solve a puzzle gains an advantage on the release of the next. For the most part this Race will be taking place in Private Messages – that’s how solutions will be given to me, and how I’ll be releasing the next puzzle in the series. If you’re the first to get me a correct answer, you’ll be the first to receive the next puzzle. If you’re the second, you’ll be the second. And so on.

These puzzles will begin relatively easy, and will get tougher as the game goes on.

This thread will be a place to keep a leader board, to smack-talk, and to make general announcements about the race. This thread is NOT the place to provide puzzle solutions (unless you all want to cross the finish line together, that is).

First puzzle to happen on the main page in the coming days…

Ratty sucks!

*EDIT* This idea sounds really cool.

That's it, you're getting a roadblock.

You gotta be shitting me. Damn.

Not shitting you. And apparently there are at least TWO solutions -- mine and Teitr's.
post #11 of 40
Two solutions? I must not be getting this correctly then. When you say drop a letter do you mean successively from the end or pick a random letter to remove?

And are you saying Teitr already has the next clue or he is helping put this together?
post #12 of 40
No, I'm in the race. Take out any letter Tzu.

Next puzzles won't be released right away. Teitr has just placed first for when the next one releases.

Oh crap, I forgot to smack-talk!

This one is kicking my ass so far.

I'll give clues if you guys want, and it's not against the rules. But be warned, I may not be a great clue giver.

I'm no judge of what's easy or hard, I guess. I thought this one was easy. I set another puzzle aside for later in the series as being much harder. That one you'll solve in a matter of moments.

Simplify if you're having trouble. In my answer it's not a full name, just a single part of the whole -- but like "Vader", if you say it it makes you think of Star Wars. Teitr's answer is a single name as well, but the only one we know.

Oh, and I'm cool with clues from you guys if you want.

We have a second place entrant into the race. Mr. Coombs comes up with DIFFERENT films than I did for the same character.

LEADER BOARD

1) Teitr Styrr
2) Mr. Coombs

Don't be scared away people ... the release of the next puzzle will not be 1-to-1 on the time lag (Teitr will not get a 12-hour lead on the next puzzle ... he will get a lead, but not by the amount of time between the next solution). A puzzle may stump someone ahead of you. Or it may come at a time when they're not visiting CHUD (how DARE they!).

That should help. I've been trying a bunch of full names.
post #21 of 40
That's the clue I was going to give. You don't have to use the full name.

Full names or no I was completely whipped last night. I haven't had time to sit down today and give it a shot but I almost had something with a character that no one in their right mind should have been able to come up with the character name let alone anagram the damn thing.

2 questions:

Are we just talking the first Star Wars movie (Ep. 4)?

Do the movie titles include articles like "The" and "a"

Teitr's solution character is in Episodes 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 IIRC
My (and Mr. Coombs's) solution character in in Episodes 3, 4, 5 and 6 but BARELY in 3 IIRC

The movie titles are complete or aka

Ratty is in 3rd place with an answer using one of the same characters, but two completely different movies...

You can ALMOST get Blade Runner out of that one.

Yes, I realize I overthought this puzzle into a galaxy far, far away.

Wow. What the hell character was this? Must've been in the cantina. Just googled and see a picture. Not sure I even remember that one.

Hey, look what Judas Booth did: (not a puzzle solution, but cool nevertheless)

Vader
Vera
Rev
RV
V

And then he comes in with a solution that matches my own. Judas Booth in position 4.

Looks like it should be in the part where the bartender is saying "we don't serve their kind here."

And now TzuDohNihm places with a solution. New puzzle soon ... so the deadline for entrants on this one approaches. I will post people's solutions once the new puzzle goes out.

Both Tzu and Teitr are urging disqualification or penalty for themselves. Tzu had help (so what?) and one of Teitr's films can't be verified as a film -- IMDB does list the exact title, but there is not information attached to the link. Does anyone know 1991 Canadian film? I'm not disqualifying either party ... but if I can't verify this Canadian film it isn't right that Teitr comes in first.

post #33 of 40
Yeah, the film in question is "A Body". I just saw it was a film on IMDB and didn't hit the link, and kept moving on.

LEADER BOARD:
Teitr Styrr: 11/8 -- 6:34pm (DISQUALIFIED)
Mr. Coombs: 11/9 -- 7:27am
Ratty: 11/9 -- 12:05pm
Judas Booth: -- 11/9 -- 3:23pm
TzuDohNihm: -- 11/10 -- 7:48pm
Teitr Styrr: -- 11/14 -- 5:51pm

Teitr Styrr was the first in with a solution, but although 1 of his titles is listed on IMDB, there is no "link" to any information. I cannot confirm whether this film exists or not. He came up with a different solution. I'm going to place Teitr in the middle of the pack.

Here are the various solutions:

Teitr Styrr: A.D. --> D.O.A. --> YODA --> A Body --> Bad Boy
Mr. Coombs: El --> L.I.E. --> LEIA --> Alien --> Aliens
Ratty: A.I. --> Ali --> LEIA --> Alice --> Malice
Judas Booth: A.I. --> Ali --> LEIA --> Alien --> Aliens
TzuDohNihm: A.I. --> Ali --> LEIA --> Alien --> Aliens
Teitr Styrr: Dan --> Land --> LANDO --> No Deal --> Leonard

New puzzle will start rolling today.

The new puzzle has been distributed to all participants. Here it is for those of you playing at home:

How many and which of Batman’s official rogues gallery can be shoe-horned into a single film? That’s a question Christopher Nolan has had to ask himself and about which fan-boys across the land are speculating. In honor of this narrative puzzle create yourself a 10x10 Excel grid and shove as many Batman villains crossword style into that grid as you can. You will get 2-points for each villain who has previously appeared in a theatrical Batman film. You will get 1-point for each additional villain.

Here is a list of the 2-point Batman villains:

Joker
Penguin
Catwoman
Riddler
Two Face
Mr Freeze
Poison Ivy
Bane
Scarecrow
Ras Al Ghul

If you use a multi-word name, like Ras Al Ghul, each of the pieces must be in the puzzle to count, but can be entered as separate “words” in the grid.

The deadline for entries is the midnight between Sunday, Nov 21st and Monday, Nov 22nd. This isn’t a “who gets it done first” puzzle, but instead a “who can do it best” one, but any ties will be broken by entry order.

Today I have received entries from Teitr Styrr and Ratty. I won't reveal the points for those entries because I haven't calculated them yet, and because it might be funner not to know, right?

Heh, that's fine. I'm gonna PM Ratty tho, because I'm curious.
