Duck Tales!

Does this qualify as Saturday morning? I recall making sure I was home and inside at the end of the school day to catch me some DuckTales.

And that NES game is an honest to god awesome classic.

I saw a few episodes of DT back in the day, and I recall enjoying it. I think I remember it having good music, or a good theme song. I never watched it that often though because I think it had a weird time slot that I was rarely around for

PS I like that CHUD now has a regular Saturday feature. As a regular Saturday Chewer, this is a welcome development*

*I didn't comment on the first week of this feature because I was unfamiliar with that cartoon

Great write-up ("...farted into the wind" made me giggle far more than it should have), but what's up with the My Buddy commercial at the end of it?
I will not have you blaspheming against Gizmo Duck.

Tzu's dead on about the game. I do miss when Capcom was licensing games out the ass. Even the weird ass Adventures In The Magic Kingdom game had its charms.

That movie feels like it's damn near impossible to find nowadays too, even though the series is on DVD. What's up with that?

I am loving this column, though. I miss when Saturday morning TV was actually exciting for EVERYONE, even the adults in the house.

That first movie, Treasure of the Golden Suns, was a damn fine animated adventure. I can still recall most of it. Nice pick. You can buy the DVDs for less than 20 bucks per volume. Though Amazon.com tells me that Treasure of the Golden Suns is on Vol 2.

I'm sure plenty of markets aired it on Saturday mornings before it was added to the Disney Afternoon block.

But the real answer is that the title of this column is mostly for aesthetic charm. We'd be leaving out a lot of fun cartoons if we were strictly bound to only those shows that aired on Saturday mornings. Our real criteria is that it be animated and intended for kids.

Holy fuck, that video.

I love Fatal Farm and I'm surprised that Joshua hadn't seen it before.

They've got a great one for Zoobilee Zoo, too.
I have indeed seen it before. Haven't seen the ZOOBILEE ZOO one though.

Disregard. Apparently I farted into the wind - was looking for a connection between the two properties instead of it clicking that it was a commercial you would have seen during the show. Hooray for staying up late and getting up early.

Cowboys of Moo Mesa, please! Also SWAT KATZ and ROCKO's MODERN LIFE. PS Don't forget David the Gnome
post #15 of 38
Now this is an entry i can get behind. Great writeup and a great Cartoon.

Dig it.

Cool idea. I've actually been doing this lately...watching cartoons I liked as a kid on Saturday mornings for nostalgia. It's easy now with most of them on DVD and/or Youtube. I like "Ducktales", but I love later Disney renaissance efforts "TaleSpin" and "Darkwing Duck" more. "Chip N' Dale Rescue Rangers" was great too. It's another one I enjoyed catching up on recently. Each and every one of these has an absolutely brilliant theme song.

One of the great kids cartoons, and a nice companion piece to your sweet article on Carl Barks.

I'm hoping Talespin gets a tribute too, but mostly I hope the greatest kids cartoon of all time, Angry Beavers, is loved enough by a CHUD staffer to feature in this slot one day.
I nearly committed the sin of digital piracy in the name of the Angry Beavers. But I held firm, and I was blessed by having them on Netflix just a couple of months later.
Shityeah! Ducktales was one of my faves as a kid, along with Talespin!
Seriously you guys, anyone who likes the show, read the Carl Barks comics. They're fucking golden, and kick the ass of any contemporaneous superhero comic.

Among many other things, the opening sequence of Raiders of the Lost Ark is taken from an Uncle Scrooge comic.
Why was Uncle Scrooge driving the van!? WHY!? (shivers in tears)

I'll see your best Ducktales opening video ever and raise you... um... this video I made for a friend for his birthday (it's a long story):

nice. loved this show as a kid, and though Darkwing duck has taken its place as the #1 duck related cartoon, its still a strong #2
post #25 of 38
Damn this column entry. I want DuckTales released to the Virtual Console. Right. Fucking. Now.

I really don't want to dust off the NES in the garage and try to hunt that cartridge down.

Make this happen now! I still have fond memories of the Angry Beavers Halloween episode with Adrienne Barbeau doing a guest voice.

(Just checked imdb and the episode was called "The Day the Earth Got Really Screwed Up.")
Just have to say I found ANGRY BEAVERS to be miserably unfunny, back in the day. I think it was the first NICK TOON I remember actively hating
post #29 of 38
So speaking of Ducktales video games, the screen clip reminded me that in order to get up higher, you had to bounce on your cane like a pogo stick. To get higher, you had to bounce on your cane on top of your nephew. Screwge McDuck believes in the 111th and 211th Rules of Acquisition.

Angry Beavers is a must. It was Penny Arcade before Penny Arcade.
I had a letter printed in Ducktales Magazine when I was a kid. That is all.

Was it written to the show itself or the characters, as if they were real people?
Was it a ransom letter?
Question for die hards of the series: Is there any episode that features both Bubba the Cave-duck as well as Gismo-duck? For some reason, I seem to recall them never meeting.
I also don't recall them ever meeting. It was almost like they existed in two different realities of Duckburg.

Written to the show itself--I was old enough not to write to the characters (barely). I think I did suggest that Gyro invent an all-purpose kitchen machine, though.

I also had a letter printed in the Indiana Jones & the Fate of Atlantis comic. Read about this and more in my new book, Misfit: It's Amazing that I Ever Got to Kiss a Girl.

I'll be waiting for:

Misfit: Interviews with Sternhart and Costa.
