People actually watch this series?
I guess? I mean, it took five years just to get to the third one, but I guess someone, somewhere is enjoying it?
I quite enjoyed both of the earlier movies actually. I don't mind there being a third - especially as I'm unfamiliar with the book (having only previously read The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe). Looks like it could be a good movie, and it'll be interesting to see what changes have occured thanks to the switch in studios.

The first was HUGE, though. It was pegged as being responsible for KING KONG's lack of splash. CASPIAN underperformed slightly, but there's still massive interest in the Lewis stories.

And three film in five years is pretty standard. We've just gotten used to the Potter/LOTR pump-em-out-yearly style.

I'm assuming the first couple did alright, but they still seem to inspire a general apathy. The whole execution is so middle-of-the-road.

WARDROBE did $745million worldwide, CASPIAN did $420million. Way better than alright. A LOT of people like these movies. And they're really not bad films. Middle of the road, but well-made and certainly better than all the DARK IS RISINGs and PERCY JACKSONs that've cropped up in the wake of LOTR and Potter.

Box office gross is certainly no indication of quality.

Thanks for hitting on the head, what has bothered me about this series. Lack of a soul indeed. Ironic.
I don't think anyone ever said it was indicative of quality. It's indicative of a lot of people paying money to see these films, though.
The first one was boring. The second was surprisingly good, and fucking HARSH in spots. I'm still undecided on this one.
Visually, it looks like pure fantasy spectacle and far greater than the first two films, but I've never particularly been a fan of Lewis. His work, in my opinion, is about as subtle as being repeatedly hit over the head with a hammer, and the cousin's redemption storyline turned me off of the book completely with its stale moralizing.
Wouldn't it be ironic if this outgrossed Tron Legacy. Could happen!
Not just "could" - I'd say it's got a Helluva shot at doing just that.

My posts here make me sound like some kind of rabid NARNIA fan. I'm really not - it's just so far down the list of banal-to-terrible family films going at the moment, all the derision the series gets feels a little lopsided.

Prince Caspian is one of the duller books anyway. Really feels like a retread of Lion. Dawn Treader has a much more traditional quest structure and should play a lot better.

Also, moving the series back to the holidays is probably a smart move. I think Caspian would have fared a lot better outside the crowded summer it was in; it opened at #1, but it was contending with Iron Man, Crystal Skull, the first Sex and the City and Kung Fu Panda, so by its 4th week, it had already slipped to #7.
I think Dawn Treader certainly has the semblance of structure, but when you examine it carefully, it's really quite disjointed and the style of Lewis makes it feel not thrilling but repetitive. Perhaps the movie will handle it better since it will undoubtedly be tighter, but I felt like the book was VISIT THIS LOCATION MORAL NOW GO HERE MORAL NOW GO THERE DON'T FORGET THE MORAL.

Why the hell do they keep shoving the White Queen into further entries in this series? Talk about the epitome of redundant.

I still love the air of importance when it closes with "DIRECTED BY MICHAEL APTED!" It's almost like neat little button saying "JUST IN CASE YOU THOUGHT THIS ONE WASN'T GOING TO BE A SNOOZEFEST!"

I'm curious. From what I remember some of the creatures were quite out there so I'll be interested to see how they adapt it.

I doubt they will ever do THE HORSE AND HIS BOY - one of my favourites - or THE MAGICIANS NEPHEW. They'll probably just skip to THE SILVER CHAIR.

If this does well, The Silver Chair is a guarantee as the next one since there will still be some straight continuity between the films. After that, who knows? The horrible BBC versions only got that far. They'll either do The Last Battle as the big finale or go the prequel route with The Magician's Nephew. You're right about The Horse and His Boy will probably never see the light of day.

They won't have to skip -- The Silver Chair is the next book, at least in publication order, which the film series seems to be following.

HORSE is also my favorite, and NEPHEW has some really neat world-hopping and Narnia genesis parts.

I thought CASPIAN was a better movie than LWW, which is ironic since the books are opposite (LWW is great, but CASPIAN is a tedious snoozer). I'm hoping for a continuation of CASPIAN's quality and sensibilities.

However, I also agree that the series has been very middle of the road and not particularly....inspirational, to indulge in a pseudo-Fleedism.

Actually, the drop from 290 million to a 140-something million was pretty bad, and caused Disney to not distribute the sequels.

I think the series is most popular with people who read the books, and thus have an emotional attachment to the world of Narnia. But I think it's not very popular aside from that.
The summer release had to hurt it. They admitted as much, I thimk.

Yeah, I remember the order now. THE HORSE AND HIS BOY takes place during the events of THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE.

I'd like to see either Del Toro or Andrew Domnick tackle a Narnia book. But it's FOX, so maybe not.
Fox is just distributing. Walden Media finances and has creative control over the franchise. Which still isn't saying much.

Slightly? It underperformed to the point Disney dumped the series, after previously announcing they'd adapt every single one of the stories.

Yeah, an over 50% drop isn't exactly small. It's a pretty massive drop off, actually, especially for a sequel to a massively popular first film. But it's the only thing Walden media has that comes close to being successful so of course they're going to try and keep it going.
I think this one could end up doing worse than Prince Caspian. At least that one was coming off of a successful starter film. I don't think many people give a fuck about this series.

Eh, if I want to be clunkily and heavy-handily preached to about christianity I'll just read The Watchtower thanks.
