The Bill Nighy as Anything Appreciation Thread

Bill Nighy, in my opinion, is a remarkable British actor whose voice ranks up there with actors such as Ian McKellen and Christopher Lee in terms of the theatrical, dramatic heights that it is able to reach. He may come from a slightly younger generation, but his presence feels decidedly more old-school and he's consistently a joy to watch.

So, what is your favorite Bill Nighy performance?

To start off, he will be appearing in the next Harry Potter film as the new Minister of Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour. In this video particularly, listen to his speech at the beginning for a sample of that aforementioned theatricality, the effortless command of drama:

By no means my favorite, but I thought I'd toss it out as not everyone may be familiar with this little gem:

addasdTHE GIRL IN THE CAFE

From Director David Yates and starring Mr Nighy and Ms Kelly Macdonald it is IMHO a wonderful little romance that feels very heart felt and genuine -- and it has a social conscience about global poverty!

Nighy also made a recent (and infuriatingly brief) guest appearance on Dr. Who as a rather passionate curator in the Van Gogh episode, if I'm not mistaken. I know there's a movement out there to cast Nighy as the Doctor himself, and I'd support that 100%.

I've always had a terrible soft spot for his vocal performance as Samwise Gamgee alongside Ian Holms Frodo in the BBC radio serialisation of Lord Of The Rings back in 1981.

Next to Serkis' Gollum, he's also responsible for the only other all-CG performance that I feel like I can actually credit the actor for creating the soul for. Davy Jones' every twitch comes from Nighy's mocap performance, and the process of applying "digital makeup" to that raw footage is an approach to CG characters I'd like to see happen more. Feels more natural, I guess.

It might be blasphemy to suggest that someone, anyone, is better at acting than Dame Helen Mirren, but when comparing Bill Nighy's performance in the miniseries State of Play to Helen Mirren's in the underrated American remake, Nighy bests the dame by a good bit. It's not Mirren's fault, necessarily, because the remake cast her as the head of a failing newspaper as opposed to a scrappy broadsheet, but Nighy's hilarious, ruthless, and delivers a "stop the presses" speech for the books.

He was in Underworld but I won't hold that against him because he's Bill Nighy.

He's the singular god damn reason I sat through the first two of those god-awful pieces of shit.

Even though it was a small role for the most part, I really enjoyed him in Hitchhikers Guide.

Bill Nighy grabbing a werewolf by the throat, breaking its neck and driving a sword through it single-handedly saves Underworld.

Recently caught him in Pirate Radio. I love that he set up his niece to fuck his godson.
