JANE EYRE BRINGS FIRE, FASSBENDER, GHOSTS AND BODICE RIPPING

At this point I'd watch Fassbender read the phone book, so that alone will get me in front of this.

Fassbender as Rochester is enough to get my but in a seat. I think he's a fantastic casting choice for the film.

The marketing may be a bit deceptive, but it does feel as if the film is attempting to infuse itself with the modern energy like Joe Wright's Pride and Prejudice did so well.

I have a deep love for the Toby Stephens BBC version that came out a few years back -- but this may actually outstrip it.

I half wish this was Wuthering Heights instead. That really needs Fassbender and Fukunaga to lend it a vicious terror. I don't know if I trust Andrea Arnold to do it.

Have you seen the BBC Tom Hardy Wuthering Heights Ms.Rappe?

I'm sorry, but are you really doubting Andrea Aronold's ability to knock Heights out of the park? I don't know about everyone else, but Arnold is one of the most talented young filmmakers out there (Red Road and Fish Tank being (aside from utterly fantastic) evocatively moody without a whiff of pretense). If I were a betting man, even though Eyre looks to be pretty great, I'd say that Arnold's Heights will kick its ass, personally. Maybe it's because I'm the resident Arnold fanboy on the site, but yeah. If it were Ron Howard or another middling talent I would be skeptical, but I think Arnold's talent will infuse the project with a sterling vitality that the story needs.

The only version I've seen is the passable Charlotte Gainsbourg/William Hurt one from the 90's, which this new one already looks better than. I'm there, man-crush on Fassbender notwithstanding.

JANE EYRE is a personal favourite of mine, although I lean more towards EMMA or WUTHERING HEIGHTS from that period. The trailer looks fantastic, love the style and energy it is showcasing. Still don't get the man-crush for Fassbender, but he looks excellent in this.

I have, and I didn't like it. They made some story changes I really was pissed about, and I just didn't think it was mean enough. No one ever has the guts to tackle the necrophilia or Heathcliff beating and raping women not named Cathy.

Hardy was good, but the production didn't let him bring what he could have. At least someone finally cast a Heathcliff that wasn't a ponce, though. I know it's sacrilegious to say, but Laurence Olivier and Ralph Fiennes were way too refined to ever pull it off.

I am really hoping Arnold sticks to her guns and casts a gypsy or Slav. No one ever does, and that defines Heathcliff's character in so many ways.

THANK YOU!

Needs more bodice ripping. And maybe a car chase or two.

This is exactly it. It's not just about Heathcliff being brutish, it's about Heathcliff being repulsed by his own skin and society pushing down on him because of his birth.

Do we know who is playing Bertha in JANE EYRE? That's probably the most vital, and most problematic, casting choice to be made.

I haven't seen Fish Tank yet and I'm anxious too. I'm not dismissing Arnold, but I'm on the fence and was one of those unimpressed by Red Road.

It had a lot going for it (the tone, the gritty urbanscape) , but I ultimately felt like it was trying to be edgy and offensive. It had that whiff of Verhoven about it, and it really went into preposterous territory. I do commend it for daring to have a thoroughly unlikeable heroine, though. She was fucking insane, and you don't get that a lot outside of Von Trier....

Then again, that probably does make her perfect for Wuthering Heights. Cathy has to be reprehensible, and Heathcliff has to be a sadist.

But it also has to have something really sexy under all that -- and if I doubt Arnold in anything, it's that she'll focus on the sick and leave out the lusty stuff.

So I apologize for being skeptical. It's one of my favorite books, I'm just on the fence about anyone tackling it, even with the violent cred of Arnold.

The BBC one with Toby Stephens was excellent. The Gainsbourg/Hurt one was terrible. I'm ashamed to say it was my first encounter with the Brontes, and it scared me so bad that I didn't tackle either sister's work until I was 20.

The girl playing Kathy, Kaya Scodelario, should bring the right energy. She's best know over here for her work on skins when she played perhaps the most repugnant character on a show full of truly horrendous people.

Fish Tank feels like a modern day Kes, and I mean that in the best possible way. There's something seething and true and turbulent about the film. Well worth watching, it's just very difficult.

Exactly! It doesn't work to cast an Englishman (even one with a Northern accent) because you can't play on the prejudice. There's no reason why anyone should treat him with suspicion. But everyone around him says "You were born evil, you're of bad blood" and he's forced to believe it and hate himself.

I'm always perplexed by readers who think he's born bad, and there was no hope for him. That's being completely swayed by its Victorian ethnic loathing. It's kind of scary.

Unless I'm blind, it's not listed on IMDB. A mystery!

Awesome. It's on my queue -- and I remember it briefly popped up on Instant but then it was gone. It's supposed to hit DVD this month, I think. Can't wait, and yet I'm kind of scared. I've read the reviews, it's going to be one of those films that leave me miserable. I know it.

It's a REQUIEM FOR A DREAM level misery-maker. There's just something achingly sad about it all.

Vis-a-Vis the new Wuthering Heights, the pre-production stuff in '08 was actually happening near me (I live about twenty minutes away from Haworth) and from what I can understand they've cast a young local actor to play Heathcliffe. Now I'm hoping that due to Yorkshire being fairly ethnically diverse that it means we might have someone who feels right, I get the feeling it's going to be another Timothy Dalton situation though where it's all anger and rage with no apparent catalyst.

And with that my interest is piqued. I love Fassbender and I love Goblin's score for Suspiria, combine that with gorgeous cinematography and I'm keeping an eye out for this movie.

This looks splendid. I really like SIN NOMBRE, and Wasikowska is definitely someone to keep an eye on.

On a superficial note, though, what's with the PowerPoint-style font? Ugly.
