Call of Duty: Black Ops - Page 2

So I ended up getting this for a B-day gift. I haven't really had the time to get into the SP, but the MP is pretty damn fun so far. It has a different feel to it, but it's almost like playing MW2 with new maps, a few new weapons, and some different perks and killstreaks.

I actually did pretty good today. I do better on the Treyarch games than the IW games. There must be some kind of glitch.

I haven't even got into the Wager matches yet. Maybe tonight.
OK I hope you'll trust that I wouldn't ask unless I really was out of ideas, but long story short.. I need your help:

I'm on REBIRTH ISLAND and can't advance. Earlier during a play through of a previous mission, I encountered a glitch that essentially made me unable to complete the mission. It had to do with Reznov not doing anything when I showed up at a location he was at. He didn't advance, he just stood there

Anyway, on rebirth.. I've axed the guy, and hid while the crane lowers the shipping container down. Once that's lowered for cover, I follow Reznov along it and wait till he says the coast is all clear. Then we run to the third cover point.

This is where I can't advance. I wait for some sort of verbal indication from him for where to go next and when, but it never comes. At one point he makes a vague hand gesture towards me.

From my hiding spot, there are three places I can go. Advance up the alley straight ahead around hte bend, try to flank left, or right

I've tried all three options, and each time he shouts "You've been spotted!" and I die right away

I've even tried just waiting and even then as I sit still he'll suddenly announce "You've been spotted!" even though he's not advanced or left cover himself, and I'm in the same place he is

What do I do? I've played the game without looking for hints online till now, and I don't suck at videogames. I'm not great, but I'm competent. I feel like I should be able to find the solution if there is one, but right now I'm lost
post #53 of 128
When you get there, Kate. The guy in between the two freight containers needs to get whacked. Drop his ass and move on with Reznov.
Thanks for this hint, Anderson. I'll give it a go when I get home. It was 2 am last night or so when I finally gave up, and I feel like I tried to get that guy but maybe I needed to do it sooner

I don't see how it has a different feel at all. It's exactly the same control scheme as MW2, as far as I can tell. It's strange because I haven't come across this observation anywhere other than this thread. And yea the MP is awesome.
Someone make an opinion for me.
I really enjoyed MW2's single player, retarded story and all, and played the shit out of spec ops. I have neither the time nor motivation to get into the MP.

worth it?

MP is where the heart of this game is, not the relatively simple SP mission. My eleven year old, Kid Vivisector, finished it in about ten hours of play. But he has yet to get onto a Wii server for MP. He ain't happy. Evidentally the company sold far more copies for the Wii and don't have enough servers to handle the load.

I don't see why time is a factor, sp, mp or co op can all be played as little as one wants. In fact, MP is the easiest to play for short bursts. If anything SP is the one that requires more time at each sitting. It's another thing if you don't enjoy the competition, which many people don't.

They have these co op missions, training missions or something, that can be played with a friend. I'm not sure how good they are, but it's no spec ops I've heard. If you're not up for the MP, I don't see the point in buying this or any of the new COD games. MP is definitely the meat of the game. You're better off with Reach or a game with a proper SP campaign.

I know the controls are the same, and it may just be in my head. Either way, I am having fun with it.

Had a good time trying to knife fuckers on the "gun game" wager matches to set them back. I kinda got bored on "1 in the chamber", but mostly because I got my ass kicked a few rounds and died right away. Strictly my own fault.

I haven't had the time to get into the SP, so far just quick MP matches.

From what I saw, these are mostly just giving you the chance to play offline with up to four players together split screen. It's mainly just offline MP with bots.

I have not tried the zombies yet.

Actually, the controls may be the same, but it feels different. Maybe it's just me, but there seems to be less recoil even on full auto.

I think there are a few tweaks to the game controls, even if the buttons are mapped the same.

Not on XBOX. Combat training (bots) can only be reached through the XBOX Live MP. So it's actually online, even if you're only playing the AI.
Well I don't notice any difference in how it controls. Its kinda the signature of COD games the ultrasenstive zero heft controls. All the guns have different recoils from each other so I can't say if the recoil has changed.

And the zombie mode sucked. Waste of time. But man there is a ton of stuff to do in MP, but I tend to just stick to Mercenary since its random teams. There are people out there in teams with mics and they're all organised. If you're not on the same level, and unwilling to use the mic as I am, it's a bit too dificult.

I do notice, once I level up to a certain point, I lose interest in the game a bit. It's best when you're leveling up and upgrading your soilder into a badass. That's why this game appears to have lots of longevity, due to all the challanges and contracts. This one should last a while.
It felt lessened with the MP5 and the Commando. Might have to go back to MW2 and try out the comparable weapons to see if there's less recoil. Maybe it's just been too long since I've played that game.

You might be right for the PS3 also. Mine is always connected, so I couldn't tell if that was the case or not. I'll have to check it out.

I never get in a game with a team that works together. Mostly just peckerheads that giggle to themselves, spend the time talking to someone that's sitting next to them, or blasting some retarded music in the background. What's the point of having a mic if you are not going to work with anyone and just dick everything up for everyone else?

THIS is exactly why I instantly mute anyone with a mic.
Yea I just try to stay close to my team-mates and hope they'll understand we need teamwork. As you all know its hit or miss.

Thankfully, its not very important to have a mic in this game, since it's relatively easy to put someone down. In a game like Gears of War or Halo, where it takes more time to put down an opponent, teamwork is more important. In COD a two on one advantage is not as insurmountable as Gears or Halo. I also think this ability to kill easily is one of the reasons CODs MP has been so popular. The MP experience is far more forgiving and has more mass appeal since everyone is able to rack up atleast a few kills.

Well technically you're right, you can play MP in much shorter bursts than the SP, but do people really ever do that? Not to mention I am to some extent a competitive gamer (I go to tournaments pretty regularly for a non FPS game), so I would feel the need to level up like crazy. Which takes a lot of time. In order to get really good you have to put a lot of time into memorizing the maps, tactics, game modes, etc.

And I've played MW2's online MP for about 10 total minutes and love the shit out of that game, thanks very much.

Anderson:

I just wanted to say thanks for your hint, it did the trick. I intend to finish up the last level when I get home tonight, and I have to say I've really enjoyed the game

Sure, it's just more of the same basically, but I really dig the period setting and wacked out cold war paranoia. I like the idea that all these crazy things could be going on behind the scenes of the official history

I like it alot more than MW2's inane Russian invasion, at least. And heck, the levels are more fun too

Anyway, I've had a blast and I hope that they do a BO2 instead of returning to the modern age. More games featuring Robert Mcnamara cameos, please!
I am playing on Veteran, always play on Veteran with a COD game since COD4. The thing is, this game is MUCH MUCH harder than either COD4 or MW2 and I die constantly on every new level. Maybe it's been too long since I last played one of these (been months and months since MW2 has been inside my xbox) but it feels much more frustrating.

I'm not very far so I have yet to see why everyone is saying it's one of the best campaigns. Especially with the fucked up punishing difficulty.
Uh, maybe you shouldn't play it on Veteran the first time through then?
I would suggest playing on CASUAL. More fun that way IMHO
post #75 of 128
Look, obviously I thought about that. I know that Treyarch and IW aren't the same so if playing on Veteran was a challenging (as opposed to frustrating) experience in COD4 and MW2 then maybe it wouldn't be in a Treyarch game because their design philosophy is different or whatever. But I also played WaW on Veteran first time through and had nowhere near this degree of frustrating and cheap deaths.

Not to mention that the game isn't always good at telling you what exactly you're supposed to be doing. That bit in the Vietnam base you defend with the napalm barrels?

So I guess my point is, the difficulty feels less hinged on more accurate enemies in slightly larger quantities than it does on bullet damage being MUCH greater in higher difficulties (for the player) so I am not only surrounded by armies of angry, crackshot enemies... they also kill me in one or two shots.

I'm stubborn. I think the game should be playable on Veteran and it is, but just this side of that so far. I will comment more when I get a bit further. Perhaps Black Ops will break me and I'll have to reduce to a lower difficulty but there's no way I'm playing on Casual.
Not trying to start an argument, but there are what, four difficulty levels? I played at normal I think, though I beat MW2 on Hardened. I'm not saying you should play it on Casual, but if Veteran is frustrating, kick it down a notch. I agree that the game shouldn't be ramping up bullet damage as its main difficulty increase factor.

The napalm barrels came up a few times in reviews and whatnot, though in dialogue Woods(?) tells you to kick them over. So they do tell you to do something, even if you have to walk up to them to get the prompt.

I'm probably not competitive enough, since it takes me soooo long to memorize the maps. It took me quite a while for MW2. But I don't play that that much anyway, a few games here and there. Still loads of fun. There are some great maps in the new one, but I think MW2 has a larger number of great maps.

But if you're afraid of getting too sucked in, you're right in not playing it. It can make you waste a lot of time quickly.
Shit, I actually meant HARDENED this entire time. I mixed them up. Hardened is the next to hardest right? Veteran is always the difficulty I try for a couple of weeks after initially completing the game. Veteran SHOULD be frustrating haha. The epilogue jet infiltration in COD4 is monstrous, for example.
The multiplayer is one patch away from being GREAT. Having an issue mainly with the spawn points.

You guys find Zork and Dead Ops Arcade yet?

Anybody want to get some CHUD matches going sometime?
Anyone else having any connection issues? I have been booted left and right. I'm not being dropped by the PSN, only by the COD servers. I'm not getting booted during a match. The connection stays fine, but while in the pregame lobby I am getting dropped at least 3 times. Everytime I loose the map that is coming up, as well as losing any parties that I am in. This just started to get worse. My PS3 is connected with a wire right now too, not wireless like it usually is.

Anyone hear about this or having the problem yourself?

I played for a few hours last night and I was in the same party and lobby the whole time. I didn't get dropped, we did have the game change hosts a couple times. It has happened to me previously but not excessively.
This is why I couldn't hang with you before. I'd get dropped in the lobby and then could never rejoin. I was getting dropped in every lobby a few times. It seems to be a problem that other people are also having that is going to be in an upcoming patch. So says the COD forum anyway.

Yeah PS3 network has been terrible last few 5 nights.

Hey, that's not me (for the most part) annoying you online as martianman68--it's my 9 year old son. If you see 2 of us on, then I'm playing with him, otherwise most likely it's him.

We were doing the training thing the other night when you jumped on, and we didn't realize you were a real person playing with us. We were wondering how your character kept leveling up more than anyone else.

I'm getting the hang of it. I'm still getting killed like crazy when I play online, but I'm actually getting 1-2 kills here and there.

How do you break out of the chair on the PS3? It would be nice to actually show my son something he's never seen before on the game.
When you are sitting in the chair, hit L2 and R2 over and over. You break out of the chair and can then walk around. Go back around to a computer terminal in the back somewhere in the room and you can type in "3arc unlock" and unlock another zombie map and also dead ops. Play a round of Dead Ops and between that and breaking out of the chair you can get like three trophies.

You should be able to find a vid on youtube also. That's where I saw it, but I don't have the link anymore.

No worries, I just joined the invite I got, took me a minute or 2 to realize it was the training mode, I was getting too many outrageous killstreaks.

Sorry I havent been online much the last few days to play...been working a shit-ton. Will try to get on some more this week though!

Man, my connection was so bad yesterday I couldn't even start a match. I ended up playing Combat Training mode, and I was kicking their asses. Hopefully I can figure out what the problem is. Rumor is that it is going to be double XP this weekend.

Combat Training makes you think that you're good and then you get in a real game and have your ass handed to you.

Man, am I the only one having problems with this friggin game? I can't even connect to a match, and when I do it is laggy and crappy. I'm been playing a lot of Combat Training instead.

Kid Vivisector has had the game since it came out, and has yet to be able to get on line with it. Supposedly they don't have enough Wii servers, but come on.
I'm on a PS3, and I have heard that other people are having this problem, but there are people playing it, so I must be in the minority, so hopefully in the next patch.

Sorry to hear about your Wii problem.

Actually Kid Vivisector got on last night after not trying for a couple of weeks, got a new patch, and lo and behold--was on. He proceeded to play for a couple of hours, and was very happy with it.

If you see a character named "a fuzzy kitten", that's my boy. Feel free to light him up, he's got a big head and needs to come down a peg or two.

I'm having issues. And friend and I tried playing a few nights ago. We must have tried for almost 45 minutes or so before we just gave up trying to connect to each other. But when I went to to just "find a match", I connected to a whole bunch of people.

We tried again last night. Right off the bat we connect and play a round and then I get dropped after the match. From then on it took like another 25-30 minutes of back and forths before we finally connected together again.

So dumb. I just want to play the friggin game! So glad I got it used for $25. But even that's too much for this to be happening all the time.
That's what's happening to me. That is happening to me between each friggin match, so you can see how frustrating that can be. I tried to party up with Batman and some other peeps. I stay in the party for about a minute before I'm dropped. I like the game, but this is getting out of control.

Treyarch is claiming to have a patch out soon to address this problem.
There was an update for the game today. It seemed to fix things. I was able to be online with a few friends in both zombie and regular multiplay for about an hour before we were all done playing.
