That extreme close-up of Beeker's pupil is pretty sweet.
Fixing. Christ, it's been that kind of a day on the back end. It ate the entire article!
Yeah, no photo for me either.
It should be working now.
Ah Muppetts, how I missed thee.

I feel 10 years old again.
From what I've read, the plot does sound a bit 'meta' but it could be interesting. I'm glad they're trying to bring them back and I'll just wait until there's a bit more to see if it's worth being interested in.

Gonzo has his chickens, Walter's got an iPhone. MUPPETS!!!

I may be cynical, but I do like a good Muppet movie.
Before clicking I steeled myself and banished any visible trace amusement from my facial features. When the photo came up, I did not crack even the slightest smile. Thinking I'd won I moved on to reading the article. When I reached the end I looked back at the photo and after a few seconds I realized I'd inadvertently begun smiling. I am not sure if that counts or not
post #12 of 41
It counts, Kate.

Hooray, Muppets! I look forward to the schmaltzy song that will appear 3/4 of the way through the movie that will make me choke up.
The full-body Fozzie Muppet with his foot up on the table is adorable.
ANIMAL!!!! ANIMAL!!!!

And, dontEATnachos, the Muppets have been meta since the inception of The Muppet Show.
Cannot wait. This movie will be huge.
I'm a huge fan of the Muppets and really can't wait to see them back in their old form again. As for the whole thing being meta, that was the feel of the show -- most of the memorable moments from The Muppet Show happened backstage. I look forward to seeing Muppets being silly and chaotic.

If you're in Atlanta (or spending time in Atlanta at some point), I recommend visiting the Center for Puppetry Arts. They have a small Henson exhibit that's pretty cool as well as Muppets and other Henson creations on display in their main museum space (including a Skeksis as I recall).

My smiled turned to a frown when I looked up the release date.

Christmas...2011.
I have it as my wallpaper right now, but I really want a nicer hi res version. So awesome.
Couldn't help it, but I think you got me thinking about smiling, which is kinda cheating.
Not only am I smiling, I got a bit of a lump in my throat (I'm a bit emotional this morning).

They're really truly coming back. I can take my niece and nephew to see them on the big screen next year and they'll both be 7. I seriously can't wait.

Segal deserves some kind of award or plaque or statue for making this happen.

I'm only half joking.

I didn't smile. More than half of them look photoshopped in.

Help me out here - where did they go? I took my wife to see Muppets in Space in the theater; it didn't seem that long ago...

Yeah, but it was Muppets in Space...

That was over ten years ago, man.
Hey look at that, it was 1999.

Right. I guess I'm curious to know what people are pining for versus what they didn't like. The show? The first movie? The second? Is there a shark-jumping moment in the Muppets' timeline?
I think a lot of people may point to Jim Henson's death as - not necessarily a shark jump - but as the begin of the decline in their "quality." People talk about A Muppet Christmas Carol lacking the Henson Soul or whatever. I don't buy that. But I do not think Muppets in Space was up to snuff. But A Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island? There's goodness there. (Named Tim Curry)

I think it was Muppets From Space.

Honestly, I think that's considered the one seriously disappointing Muppets production. I'm not a Muppets expert though and am not as familiar with the post-Henson stuff, most of which felt almost-but-not-quite to me. But a lot of people love A Muppets Christmas Carol, at least.

I think we're hoping they took the long hiatus to just kind of get some distance from Jim Henson's long shadow and find that anarchic spark again. I know that sounds like meaningless horseshit but it just seemed like they were losing steam with each passing year after Henson's death.
The new character looks like a Muppet base model that's waiting to be designed.
Maybe that's the part of the joke?
I immediately thought of the English major from Avenue Q.
He's voiced by Seth Rogen . . .
Jim Henson was a big part of a LOT of our childhoods. Sesame Street, Muppet Show/Movies, Fraggle Rock. When he died the new voice sounded like someone imitating a parent - the voice is close, but something is off. Kermit was never the same - hell the entire Muppet gang was never the same. It's hard to mourn though when you think of all the joy this man brought to the world.

I'll be watching A Muppet Family Christmas this month with my daughter. I suggest you all find a copy this holiday season - if only to watch Swedish Chef try to cook Big Bird for the turkey dinner.

Edit: [Muppet Spoiler] Try not to cry when Jim Henson appears at the end. [/End Muppet Spoiler]

The beginning of Muppets From Space seemed promising... the Muppets were actually playing the Muppets again. Then it becomes a really, really long slog in which we're treated to that boring-ass bear character and Jeffrey Tambor doing his worst Jeffrey Tambor impersonation.

Saw The Muppet Movie at the Winchester Alamo recently with a bunch of kids in attendance and they loved it. What a blast. I'm rendered slightly hopeful by the recent Muppet shorts.
oh man, Muppets!!! I feel like i'm 10 again
post #35 of 41
Basically, Christmas Carol and Treasure Island mostly get a pass because they're OKAY. Muppets in Space can suck a dick. Everyone holds The Muppet Movie, Muppets Take Manhattan and Great Muppet Caper as the holy 3.

Do you have the original, out of print version with all the songs? The wife & I have a Christmas party every year and watch our old VHS of this, it's fantastic. I'm usually pretty drunk by the time it gets to Swedish Chef & Big Bird singing Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire, but that part just makes me weep with laughter for some reason. Also, yes, SPOILER when Jim tells Sprocket that someone has to do all the dishes... yeah I tear up./SPOILER

Anyways, there's no Pepe the Prawn in this pic, which gives me so much joy.
Actually I sort of like Pepe.... He's no Gonzo but has some great lines.
Swedish Chef's reaction when he sees Big Bird for the first time in Muppet Family Christmas is one of my favorite Muppet moments. Then when Big Bird gives him the present and he realizes he can't cook him...goddammit. Something in my eye.

I don't know how things in the US are, but internationally the Muppets have all but disappeared. At least over here. And they were huge when I was a kid.
I too like Pepe. This likely makes me a Muppet Philistine.

Watched that TV Christmas movie with Joan Cusack as the villain last year. Ugh.
I've seen that. It has that awful bit with the Scrubs cast where John McGinley looks like he wants to kill himself.
I tried not to smile...but couldnt help it!
