LATE TO THE PARTY: RE-ANIMATOR

For a 25 year old flick made for around a million bucks, I think Re-Animator did a great job of stretching its budget to the very limits. Considering the tone, it's not like every piece of make-up or special effect had to be "perfect." It still works like crazy, the whole thing.

Glad the score connected so much with you, though. It's good to know that's one not just for the schlock-hounds amongst us.

You're right about the effects. I don't think they were going for simulacrum at all. It's part of its charm and humor.

Totally. It's a balancing of comedy and horror that's often imitated, but rarely bettered. For that reason alone, it deserves our attention.

"Herr Doktor!"

The opening theme music felt like a theme.
Ya think? Ha, this was why Nick was tweeting the other day about never realizing the Re-Animator score is a total Psycho rip-off.

Really hung up on the makeup, seems like! It's been a while; I'll have to give it a look.

Ashamed to say, but that DVD artwork used to make me think that Pacino was in this. I was young and stupid, needless to say.

Re-Animator is one of the most enjoyable films made with inspiration from the works of H.P. Lovecraft. That Richard Band score is a lot of fun and the humor of the film works all across the board. There should've been a fourth and fuck Yuzna for complicating the project, but as it stands the first is the best and it's always available to revisit.

Andrea, check out FROM BEYOND sometime. It's a damn fine film as well and you'll get to see Jeffrey Combs' pineal gland!

Damn right Phil, damn right.

I watched this way too early and way too much in my life for it to be any good to me. Barbara Crampton was one of my first on screen rushes, which is kind of fucked considering the situations she'd always find herself in. And not having seen Combs in this means you'll be left out of about 10% of horror geek references since.

haven't seen it. would love to but the lack of friends who are down with cheesy stuff like this always seems to push it to the back burner in favour of things I am catching up on.

soon though...sooon

Quoted, how you say, "for the truth?"

Has that officially bit the dust? For a while there, I was periodically checking in to William H. Macy's IMDB page and it had him slated to play The U.S. President. The project seemed to be "in development" for years with no movement, though.

Just look at that outfit. Outside of Manga, where else will you see such a risque fitting garment? It's like Stuart Gordon kept pulling the seam apart to see how far he could take it without showing everything.

Flick's perfect for viewing alone or with company, sir. Fill your boots!

Combs never disappoints. Both sequels are worth checking out as well.

Word from the man is "shit's fucked." Apparently problems and issues with certain individuals caused the film to be put to bed for now. Fingers crossed for the best.

Indeed. Thanks for the info, man!

Do we know who the problem cases were? Someone holding out for more cash?

I've been told the stopping point was Yuzna. That's all I got. The biggest problem now sounds like the prime time for the story has passed. Apparently the tone of the film reflected heavily on the state of the US while George W. Bush was in office. It would have been very enjoyable to see the re-animated dead wreck the living Hell out of the Colon, Dick and Bush triptych.

Ahhh! Makes sense. Such a shame, though.

Cheers again for letting us know.

I guess I'm glad they took it out, but the deleted subplot about Dr. Hill having powers of mesmerism is kind of fun to watch on the deleted scenes.

Problem is though by taking it out it doesn't explain how he has the power to command the other dead folk or why he is the only dead who keeps his shit together mentally I mean.

Yeah, but somehow the film is still great!

There's also a deleted subplot showing West mainlining the reagent so he doesn't need to sleep, so hey, win some lose some.
