A helping hand... 2010 edition

Traditionally, we have had a gift exchange on CHUD around this time of year, and that seems to be happening right on schedule this year. But it got me to thinking. Many of the people who are participating are not doing too too badly in life (hence the propensity to purchase gifts for random people on the internets). But there are many people here who are. Whether its due to the continuing suck-hole that is the economy, or personal tragedy, this hasn't been the brightest year for some people.

If there is one thing that remains true about CHUD, it's the community's ability to rally around someone who needs help. I thought maybe we could identify a couple of our most deserving members and get some shit done yo.

Obviously, the guy who just lost his house to a fire is on my list. But there are others here I am sure. I would like to hear some recommendations or suggestions from the group on who we could help out this year.

Would having your entire reality shifted by a Hollywood break-up classify as needing a helping hand?

That is not quite an accurate representation of the my remarks. From the thread:

Quote:

I think people are mistaking my meaning. When I was writing about this, I had to try and describe my reaction to the news. They are as you point out total strangers and their romance or lack there of has no real impact on my life. Yet at the same time I did get a vicarious thrill from seeing such talented and well suited people collaborating on an interpersonal venture.

So, after I wrote about how I was a fan of Aronoweiszki*, I was faced with the writing challenge of describing my feelings now that they were no longer involved. Was I "depressed"? Well, no. "Upset"? "Disappointed"? None of the above

Basically I just am faced with the task of rewiring synaptic connections and generating new mental associations when I think of the two. Instead of thinking "Aronofsky+Weisz=Couple", it's now "Aronofsky+Weisz=/=Couple"

That is a new reality. I didn't mean to suggest it was a mind bending brave new world, simply that it was a development I needed to make a mental effort (however slight) to integrate into my world view

*that is humor and not a serious name I've invented
Still though it's nice to hear people are thinking of me

And after someone comes up with a great idea you two insert more of the same bullshit.
There are a hundred other threads to talk about this shit. Do it somewhere else.

I would think Hellboys family could use at least some well wishes.

This is a pretty good idea, though I'm not sure you're going to beat house burning down.

You don't need to be forum police for me, it doesn't bother me when things go wildly off-track. Indeed, part of the fun is steering them back into a direction!

If we can get some contact information for Paul's family (I think that was Hellboy's real name), that would be a good fit for this list for sure.

I would like more than one person on this list, as I think there are enough of us that we could help several people out. I mean yeah, even if we all banded together for one person, there's no way we'd have enough resources to purchase them a new house lets' say, but we can sure as shit lighten the moods and make people feel wanted and valued.

At the risk of doing exactaly what I was complaining about:

I wasn't doing for you, I was doing it for the thread. When people see the title and may want to help out they are going to see more of the same inane crap and possibly jump out.

Sorry for the derail and continued crap.

Personally, I don't want more then one person on this list. I don't even want one person on this list. But it's a nice idea, Ludwig. I think helping out Starving Dog and his family should be our first priority, unless, regrettably, something comparatively shitty has/does happen to someone else.

I think we're supposed to contact Eileen for info about SD. I'm gonna do that now.

Me neither. By "want" I meant "I want to help a few people", not "I am collecting hard luck cases like Pokemon GIVE ME MORE!" :P

He was a poster here back in the day that got sick and later passed away from that illness (cancer). Here is the site that was set up to help him raise money for treatment, here is an article discussing the huge Blade Runner retrospective event they put together as part of the fund-raising efforts.

HOLY SHIT? How the hell did I not know that?

I feel kind of ashamed. I mean, of course I remembered Hellboy, but I had no idea of his passing. Christ.

Don't feel bad Jacob, unless you were paying attention during a certain period of time you probably wouldn't have seen anything about it. I can't remember if there were a ton of posts here about Hellboy or not, but he dropped off from being a regular poster way before he got sick. I stumbled upon the news myself. My last boards memory was about sort of getting into a fight with him about helping Slater find work in LA (I was pro-Slater, he was pro-maintaining his reputation in the face of not really knowing who Slater was). This was before Slater got the screen-writing gigs and whatnot, he had just been laid off from a public relations firm (?? my memory is sketchy) that he had moved out to LA specifically to work for, and I felt awful for him. So I got into fights with relative strangers. Fucking internet, who knew.

A former co-worker died suddenly yesterday of a brain aneurysm. She was 41, and it's rocked my professional community pretty hard. (I didn't know her very well, so this isn't a sympathy hunt). I was really moved by the fact that she donated her organs, and that because of her choice, there could be several individuals alive this holiday season because she isn't.

I thought I would post links here for Chewers to register to become organ donors if you aren't already. It took me literally 90 seconds to register online (NJ licenses don't have the little box you can check on back anymore), though the procedure varies by state. Hoping I can rally some of you to get on board with something that I think is pretty important.

USA: http://organdonor.gov/donor/registry.shtm
Canada: http://organdonations.ca/help/organdonor/
UK: http://www.uktransplant.org.uk/ukt/h...me_a_donor.jsp
Australia: http://www.medicareaustralia.gov.au/...r/register.jsp
South Africa: http://www.odf.org.za/

Hope everyone who observes it has a great Thanksgiving.

Update: six people are alive today because of my late co-worker's organ donation. A true inspiration.

Bumping because I want all your organs up for grabs if you drop dead with usable organs. Get on it.
Been an organ donor since the option was available on our licenses here. Not that mine are likely to do anyone any good at this point...
They'll still take your eyes. You can also donate all your shit to science.
Yeah, that shit should be mandatory. Why the fuck not?
