I'd be down for seeing BATTLE ROYALE in 3D. Why not. It's a pretty fun movie. The novel is a great read and the manga is really good as well. I agree that the less said about the sequel the better even though it has one of the all time great crazy Riki Takeuchi performances in Japanese cinema history.

[edit] You just can't beat Takeshi Kitano playing knife-catch with a schoolgirl's frontal bone.

Count me in the group who is excited to finally see it in theaters regardless of the Dimension.

I'm so glad I saw this while I was in Japan. The perky Japanese host lady on the TV cheerfully describing the rules of the game was so hilariously over-the-top, yet completely authentic. I don't like 3D, but if the 3D version leads to this movie being available on DVD in North America, I'm all for it.

Why is this happening? So damn pointless.

Other than the static establishing shots, I don't think that Battle Royale is a film suited to be in 3D. Fukasaku used a lot of zoom lens (one of the reasons I love the film), and I thought zoom lens also tend to compress depth. Oh well, whatever.

I got to see the film at the Seattle International Film Festival not so far from its Japanese theatrical release. An amazing experience.

I got a crappy VCD off of Ebay. Later got the Korean special edition. Then got the UK steel-case special edition. Then got the NTSC released by the UK. There have always been image issues with each version, but I hope the UK blu-ray coming later this month looks gorgeous. I have it pre-ordered on AmazonUK.

A brilliant film and I look forward to ditching my bootleg copy I bought in NY for the Anchor Bay one.

The hollyweird redo for this would be a hilarious neuter job. Look forward to seeing some westerner go all Lord of the Flies with Twilight speak.

Here's a trailer that showcases some of the new CG. I don't particularly approve.

EDIT
Silver lining: it sure is a gorgeous transfer of the film that they've smeared that CG all over.

WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT!?

Ugly ugly ugly. The music in the ad certainly doesn't help either. That goes way beyond the bad CG blood in the Special Edition.

Me, I liked the fact that the movie's somewhat rough nature led to shots of people getting shot with no sight of blood until the close-up.
