Fantastic review of the film that pretty much covers my misgivings about the film on a narrative and thematic level perfectly! Particularly about how the subtext of the last two films became literal text in a way that really started to stretch the toy world a little too far.

From the commentary, the filmmakers were definitely aware of the line they had to walk in portraying Andy. I felt that they made him far too specific for someone who was never really a character. I have such major issues about how he was handled in the ending. Ugh.

That said, I still bought the blu-ray and the film is supremely entertaining. A really nicely done home video release.

EDIT: Kung Fu Panda IS better than Wall-E!!! Actually, I wouldn't say that. KFP is simply a film I much prefer to watch than Wall-E, which I admire the hell out of, but felt let down by.

Great review Justin. I wish you wrote more on the front page.

Great job, Justin - loved the 300 and Roy Neary references. It bothered me how Toy Story 3 sidestepped the mortality issue in favor of leaving a reboot option wiiiiide open - after the great final line in Part 2, the lesson here is that you are impervious to age, destruction and obselenscence, as long as Disney can wring money out of your movies. Cop out!

As for Andy, well, I like him because he looks EXACTLY like me. No fooling.

I'm also in the Kung Fu Panda camp. I felt like everything in Wall E that involved human beings was too Dreamworksy, and the ending was cheap. Kung Fu Panda literally was Dreamworks, but had great action and a consistency that Wall E didn't.

Great review man.

I also prefer Panda to Wall*E, if only because Panda is consistently fun while Wall*E never manages to match the quality of the first 15 minutes. In fact, I found most of the stuff with the humans to be pretty terrible.
